advice from others

I have an appt next Monday morning for my initial visit (9/14/09). I will be leaving on a week long vacation with my mom, sister, and nieces (girls only, we do this every year) at St George Island, Florida and it's going to be grilling, cooking, a little wine and some fine, fun times.....I don't think I can say NO everyday to the food and fun.

my question: should I not start the diet until after my vacation or go ahead and start for 5 days and possibly blow the entire second week? The 14th was the first appt I could get......should I change it?

thanks for all advice!!

My opinion - yes. It's a great program and you want to do it right. You will have to learn how to say no - but start when you get back.

I agree with the others if that is where your head is at. Mine wasn't. I was so sick of being fat and did not want to gain another single pound. What do you want? Do you want not to gain another single pound? Are you tired of being fat and another single day just won't due? That is where I was. If another week won't matter I would suggest waiting.

I started my journey the week before Thanksgiving because I already hated my weight and could not bare to put on another typical 5-7 pounds more. Instead, by Christmas I was down 25 pounds, best Christmas present I could have ever given myself.

I am not saying the others are wrong, because you need to be completely comitted when you start this program. You just need to evaluate where you are and decide if you will be in a situation to do it. Having the ability to buy, cook, grill foods means you could do it. If you do not want to compromise your vacation in this way I completely understand and agree with the others, but if you are ready to do it now and want to, you can.

Chilibean, it's important that you be happy on the diet and pleased with your results. For that reason, I too would put the diet off until after returning from vacation.
After vacation, I would make the decision to completely commit. There will always be weddings, vacations, birthdays, football games, anniversaries, cruises, etc that provide excellent opportunities for all of us to cheat. However, once you start the diet, much of your motivation will come from seeing your own results. MEDI is a very simple, easy diet for those that make the commitment.
Also, why start taking shots & medications and incurring expenses before you are ready for the full-blown diet?
This is just one person's opinion, but I'd definitely reschedule my initial appointment to start MEDI after vacation. Then, I'd get going on the diet and be ready to show off your new bod when you see friends and family over the holidays!
Have a great trip and then, best of luck with us on the MEDI journey!

You can still keep your appointment for the initial visit, just start the diet and get the shots when you get back.

Thanks for all of the advise, I really do appreciate it.

tracy_d: I was not aware I could go for my initial visit and then start as soon as I get back. I thought once you went the weekly payments started the following week. (which is the week I would be gone). I'll check into that, that would be my best bet.

The main reason I feel I won't be able to follow it as I would like to is that this is the last get together for all of us. My Mom is terminal and won't be here to do it next year and she wants to have the food she used to make us as we were growing up and I would hate to hurt her by not eating, (also, I have decided not to tell anyone in my family yet).

I know I can eat smaller amounts but when I start medi I would like to give it my ALL and everything, other vacations and cruises don't bother me, I know I can handle that.

Thanks again for all of your input

I would wait until you get back. You can go to your initial appointment and learn about the program. Also, while you are in FL I would try and watch what you eat. Don't eat a lot of carbs and watch the drinking. You will have a harder first week when you get back if you really binge while you are there. This is most defintiely a lifestyle change and after you adapt to it you will be able to go on vacation and adjust accordingly but right off the bat I would not recommend it. Sorry to hear about your mother and I hope you have a wonderful trip!

You will have to pay for the consult, but The weekly payments are paid only when you go, so don't count the week you are away, then when you get back start the diet for the first week - you'll have all the info-then go back for your weigh in a week after you start and that's when you pay. Hope that makes sense.

I am in total agreement with Macauley and McBoo. This program is a major lifestyle change, and requires a total 100% commitment from you to be successful. It does not sound like this is where you are right now. Take a look at the thread below. There is a lot of important information there.

Welcome Newbies! Helpful info for week 1.

Desert rose, thanks for the link, I had been reading there for a bit.

The reason my appt is on the 14th is due to the clinic not having a dr there very often (vacation) and they are only open 4 days per week and only select hours then. So, I could only get an appt at that time. I am 100% ready BUT I was not planning to "start" until after my vacation but did not realize as Tracy_d pointed out to me that I could "join up" and then start as soon as I return home.

So the plan is to go to my scheduled appt, go on my planned vacation and start when I wanted to originaly start with 100% participation. I apologize if I led some to believe that I wasn't 100% ready, that is not at all true, it was just the timing with the clinic.

thanks again for your thoughts

Chilibean, make sure you fast before your initial appointment. I was not told to do so. Within an hour before my appointment, I ate what I considered my "Last Meal", a veggie cheeseburger with cheese fries & ranch dressing from a yummy, greasy spoon called Snuffer's. Needless to say, my bloodwork was crazy.
Luckily, I had seen my OB/GYN (the one who also owns the MEDI franchise I go to) that morning for my annual visit and had fasting bloodwork done there that same day, so we did not have to redo it. For example, my fasting bloodwork showed below normal blood sugar, whereas my afternoon bloodwork showed high blood sugar, borderline diabetic. Cholesterol, triglycerides and more were also thrown off by having eaten prior to my appointment. Be sure to fast! And then, go have a great vacation and be ready for lots of support and structure when you return!
