McBoo,

I went for my weigh in today and to my amazement I lost 5.2lbs during my recovery period from the surgery. I was completly off all meds. I just made sure I ate right. I will be taking your advice and taking it slow. I officially started week one today again and I am back in ketosis. The only thing is I can only exercise light. So walking will do for now. My total weight loss since I started on 2 July is 30.5 lbs. Thanks for your advice.

I posted this on the alcohol thread but wanted to hear all of your opinions too!

I have a dilemna (which may take a long post) that I could use all of your expert advice on:

I am going to my fiance's brother's wedding (my future brother-in-law) at the end of September. My fiance and I have not seen his family yet since we got engaged a month ago (they live over 1,000 miles away). I set a mini goal when I started MWL (about 2.5 weeks ago) to be down 15lbs before we head to the wedding. It looks like I should be able to reach that goal!

Anyway, just for some background: I am 22 years old and most people my age do not know how to socialize without alcohol (sad, I know). I have to admit- I enjoy drinking, but I can take it or leave it. I grew up around quality beer, wine and spirits- as my father is an alcoholic beverage writer, and always has a stocked bar. My dad set a great example for us- even though his job revolves around alcohol I have never seen him drink more than 2 drinks in a night. He taught us to appreciate alcohol in moderation and I have had no problem giving it up these past few weeks.

Here is where the dilemna arrises: My fiance's family and most of our friends (some that I have not seen since high school) that will be at the wedding, tend to drink to get drunk- especially at an event like a wedding. I am going to the bachelorette party (which is basically a bar crawl), the rehearsal dinner and the wedding and I am really nervous.

I feel nervous not because I think I can't resist alcohol, because I absolutely can. I am nervous because I think that those around me will point out that I am not drinking constantly. I know it sounds strange, but I have been around them when they have poked fun out of others for not drinking. I think that they equate people that drink with people that are fun. I want to be there to support my fiance's brother and celebrate his marriage- I do not think that I need alcohol in order to do that.

Furthermore, I think that when I am out at the bachelorette party I am going to have a hard time motivating myself to stay awake and to stay positive when every one around me will be drunk and probably unreasonable.

Before I read this thread I was planning on having vodka tonics, maybe two or three over the course of the 4 day weekend. But now that I see that it sets you back I am not going to. I have worked so hard over these past few weeks and I am starting to see a difference in myself- a vodka tonic is not worth it (period!).

Now that I have decided not to drink, I need some real advice. What do you all think that I should do in order to avoid all of the comments and ridicule. Also, my fiance's sister is the first person to point out everyone else's flaws. I am worried that she is going to embarass me infront of the other family members and friends. I want to have something that I can say that can disarm people around me. I also want some advice on how the heck I can not be annoyed by so many drunk people!

I know that the people who really care about me will support me. My fiance has been really supportive, but he will not be with me at the bachelorette party (obviously)- and he is the best man so I will not be sitting at his table at the wedding. Without him there to stand up for me I am really worried.

If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate them!

Thanks for the constant support!

Congrats on your success so far! I too live in Charlotte! I also know what it is like to be around people who drink socially. I am in my VERY late 20s (I can only say that for another month ) and our social life revolves around events where there is drinking just like yours. If you have decided that you are definitely not going to drink than you can do it and stick with it! I would recommend drinking Club soda with a lime (no one will know). I often ask the bartender to put it in a regular cocktail glass (sometimes they try to put it in a plastic cup that people would question). Also, you can always get a drink that you really don't like at all. You will have no desire to drink it and people will not ask questions. Lastly, you can always say you are not feeling well (headache, ulcer...whatever) and just don't want to drink that much.

I have continued to drink socially on this program. Not often at all but it has happened. I know how to manage it and what I can and cannot drink. I LOVE wine but no longer drink it. Makes me feel horrible now. When I do drink I will have 1 or 2 Cherry Vodka with Club soda's. No carbs and 65 calories each. I make 100% sure I work out the days that I do. If I don't work out I don't have a drink...period. There are a lot of people on this board who do not drink at all and defintiely believe it can slow down progress. Everyone needs to do what is right for them. I know I can control it (and control food choices while I drink..that is a biggie) and I do not feel it has slowed down my weight loss. I am 100% committed to myself and my health and I think you are too!

Congrats on making this decision for yourself and I am glad you posted about it. People here give wonderful feedback! Have a wonderful time and remember you are there to celebrate and have fun. It is not about the drinking or not drinking. Focus on spending time with people and enjoying yourself...oh and DANCE!

Club soda and Lime. Then sit back and watch them make fools of themselves repeating themselves over and over, falling down and throwing up. When you get to the actual wedding you will be fresh and relaxed and the drinkers will be hung over and wishing they were at the reception so they can get their next drink.

I am not a drinker but have had to go to social-events taking place in a bar setting with lots of people drinking around me. I would order a sugar-free Red Bull on ice and sipped on it. I "appeared" to be drinking (which made some "friends" happy) and I was able to stay awake. This option worked fine for me since I don't like to drink but thought I would throw it out there.
Again.... I know we could debate how healthy red bull is but it sure beat the alternatives.

Hi Bre,
Offer to be the designated driver. It is way better waking up in the morning and feeling good then feeling like crap. And the only important ones are you and your fiance, if he knows what you are doing and why and is supporting you then you shouldn't have to worry what the others think. You will be healthier and happier, good luck.

This is my first post. I am in the second day of my third week and about 12lbs down. I am really impressed with all the support here and I am super excited to be part of it. I am getting married on Feb 6th and I would love to be 40lbs lighter. I am sure with the support of this group and the plan I will make it.

I am on weekend number two of college tailgates and spent last weekend with friends...all of whom drink...alot despite being between the ages of 30 and 60.

Seriously, everyone is more concerned with themselves than with you. Go to the bar, order your own drink...like McBoo suggested, club soda and lime or lemon...no one will know if it is or isn't alcohol. If the glass is different, ask them to put it in the same glass as a mixed drink.

None of my friends can believe I'm not drinking...big game on 9/26 ...I said I'd have ONE drink then.

I do NOT share with anyone what diet I am on...none of their business.

So go to your bachelorette party and wedding and enjoy! Don't make a big deal about not drinking and by the second round, no one will remember!
Have fun!

I forgot...the ONLY reason I am on MWL is alcohol! I don't like chocolate or ice cream. Can't stand chips. Don't snack at night. Don't have any obsessive eating habits. I've always eaten a healthful diet and exercised regularly...however, the bottles of wine and martinis REALLY started packing on the pounds about 6 years ago. No amount of calorie restriction or increased activity would budge the weight. Alcohol just stops my metabolism...different for everyone. I know it makes me sound like an alcoholic...not. Just REALLY love wine...all kinds, different regions, countries,
etc. Even one or two glasses a night just messes up my ability to burn calories. Empty calories that are not worth it! And to McBoo's point, it is actually much more fun and funnier to be the sober one in the group...and to be the designated driver! El

Bre-

I'm in the same situation. We've had a lot of parties/b-b-q's with our friends just lately and they all revolve around drinking. I too am younger, (will be 25 next Wed.), and so I completely understand the stress of being around a crowd of poeple who don't know any other way of drinking except to get drunk.

My advice: Tell the people closest to you what you are doing right now and that drinking will screw up your progress. Then they can act as your support group when others try to pursuade you to have one or give you a hard time.

At the first party we went to, my husband did this with all of his buddies. He actually did it without my even knowing...He just quietly went to our friends and said, "Hey, Kristin's trying to lose weight right now, so don't give her a hard time about not drinking." And they didn't.

You shouldn't be embarassed about making good health choices, and if anyone else gives you a hard time about it, they aren't worth listening to.

Just thought I'd throw this in because I never thought of something as simple as being upfront with people and cutting off the comments before they even started. Good luck and have fun! I know you'll do great!!!

PS....The next morning you won't believe how amazing it feels to know you had the will power to ignore the taunts and any urge you might have had to have a drink. Its really a great confidence boost, so focus on that throughout the night and the next morning celebrate your victory!

Thank y'all for the compliments

The only things I can think of that has helped me get this far so quickly are:

Following the plan. MWL is geared somewhat like Atkins which was designed to help heart patients lose weight quickly so they could survive their openheart surgeries. MWL helps us cut carbs drastically so that when we do anything (including breathing ) we burn our own fat for energy. Any carbs that we take in are used first for fuel, then we burn our fat for the rest. Cutting sugar also has the same effect and we don't have any excess calories to store as fat.
Cutting excess fat has the same result!
Exercise. I had lost a lot of weight prior to this (was 263 and got down to 122 by doing basically the same things-cutting carbs drastically, increasing protein intake and exercising. When we exercise, we increase our dead metabolisms . I don't think I had a metabolism until I started exercising. Back then, I used the Richard Simmons exercise tapes because I was too embarassed to go to a gym After I lost around 70lbs, I finally joined Golds. There was the kicker my metabolism needed!
Sadly, I had a pretty significant back injury-self-inflicted by cleaning (NOT MOVING) my washing machine I tore a disc and ended up with sciatica. I kept eating the same but not exercising so the weight came back A great chiropractor (whom I still go to) helped me recover rather quickly so I could at least go back to work
BUT, since i increased my gym time, the weight has just flown off . I also increased my water intake since MWL requires it which helps me greatly! I drink a liter of Smart Water with the crystal light hydration in it before I go to the gym. My body likes it I last longer in my workouts and I feel great afterwards too I'm fortunate that my body loves cardio! I combine weights, core exercises (helps with balance), and cardio when I go!
I'm also lucky that I get those endorphins roaring during the workout so I have a LOT of energy afterwards.

Sadly, I'm working a lot the next 2 weeks and I find it hard to exercise after work cuz I spend a lot of time on my feet. Makes cardio a lot less appealing

So folks, essentially, this is how I lost it so fast! Take what you will from my experience and I hope this helps

Cindy

~Ginny~ I could not have said it better myself.

It is so very true that what others think is neither here nor there, if you let it affect you or your behavior, then there is some work to do on the issue of self esteem. Probably not a popular thing to say, I am sure, but nonetheless true. I choose not to drink, other than a social glass of wine on Christmas Day. The empty calories and lack of control are more than I want to put up with. I still am invited to social events, and I really do not care what people say when I choose not to drink. Most everyone knows I do not indulge and if they get snarky, that is their problem, certainly not mine. However, to each his/her own.

Well,gosh ...thank you Cindy!

Going back to work full time will give me the extra $$$ to really get involved working with a personal trainer to tighten up some of the areas that need it. I have never really worked with weights, so I do need the instruction. Aerobic, cardio...can do that in my sleep! But I do need the weight training.
(Not trying for heavy duty lifting either, just toning lifting stuff!)

Did my 3rd weigh in today and I lost another 3.2 lbs this past week! As much as I despise it I guess getting up and going to the gym at 5:30 am really is helping the process.

Week 1: lost 8.4lbs
Week 2: lost 2.0 lbs
Week 3: lost 3.2 lbs

So in just 3 short weeks I have lost 13.6 lbs, (5.5 inches from my waist alone) I must admit I am in disbelief. This morning I put on a pair of pants I haven't worn in over 12 months. That was a good feeling!

I do have a question for you all. This is suppose to be a low carb diet. I have been in large ketosis for 3 weeks now and I am completely hydrated and getting enough sodium as well. Today my NP told me to increase my carbs to 40 grams. That seem like a lot but she wants me to bring my levels down. I just am hesitant but I know I should trust them. Just curious if anyone else had experienced this.

Jo,

I so admire your sense of self and your strength. You are a shining star.

I think the reason others are so critical of nondrinkers is that they feel they are being judged when nondrinkers choose not to drink. Little do they realize that besides the entertainment they provide nondrinkers could care less. If they realized that they would probably learn to live and let live.

Jo,

Please be careful even with a trainer. I have known several friends who have suffered back/neck injuries after being pushed too hard by a trainer. One particular friend had to have some discs in her neck fused. Please listen to your body. I've gotten to where I always have back support when I lift, and I lift 3 times a week. I do not do it freely anymore. Sometimes I use a chair with back support and sometimes I use the machines. I try to mix it up because there is an issue with muscle memory with the machines.

Just my 2 cents.

BTW: I apologize for taking up so much space on the thread about my dog, but I so appreciate the support. I am feeling a little better today. All my boys were home for dinner tonight and we toasted to Rudy and recalled funny memories we had of him. It really made me happy to know that he is still bringing us love and bringing our family together. He passed on 09-09-09, which to me is a sign that he was sent from God to be our little angel and he continues to watch over us. I posted a tribute and a picture on Petloss.com Year 2009 Tributes - R. Scroll down to Rudy Church if you are interested in seeing.

You guys are all such gems and I can't begin to tell you what you all mean to me. Thanks for helping me get through a very difficult time. I am so lucky to have you. Love to you all!
