Hi CGT -
Protein contains 4 calories per gram
Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram
Fat contains 9 calories per gram
Jennifer - you want to lose the fat lbs - don't be discouraged that you had water weight because that can go away easy. Shrinking your fat cells and eliminating the fat will have the most impact on your health. Check your food sources this week, deli meat always makes me retain water... You really need the veggies so don't let that go - I write down everything I eat so I can see what effects me. Just try something different. You are doing fine - it is ALL about learning what works for you.
Great job Kate - that was a fantastic goal that you made! Have you made a new one? I am hoping to hit my goal weight by the end of the month... not sure what I will do once I get there...

11th day - Sore arms

I am on my 11th day, and for the past 5 days my arms have felt kinda sore and weak like after a workout, only I haven't worked out. Any thoughts?

Otherwise things are going great! The headache still comes and goes, but I've noticed it's when I am working at the hospital and don't do as well on my fluid intake. We even went to Outback friday night and had steak and steamed veggies. The bread and my son's ceasar salad (my favorite) didn't even bother me.

I am noticing a difference in my clothes already so yesterday I went and played dress-up in my closet of old clothes I haven't worn in a loooong time. It was so exciting! But also sad at the same time, as I have wanted to get back to those clothes for so long, bcuz as fast as I am losing, I probably won't get to wear them very long. I know that's really wonderful but at the same time I will have to go shopping; I HATE shopping, and yes I am a woman!

Had the FAGE yogurt last night as a late snack. It was the first time and didn't expect it to be so tart. I added a little splenda and a little of the choc. shake mix to it and it was wonderful. Yesterday made lettuce wrap fajitas, with a few sprays of oil vinegar dressing, and they too were wonderful. Thanks to everyone and the recipe ideas/tips. Again, my husband started with me too. I told him last night, "isn't it a shame that we could've been eating like this all along? I don't feel like I'm missing anything and the natural food tastes so good." He just laughed.

Thanks for all the inspiration!

I am so proud of you - you were so concerned before starting and you've adapted so well!

As for the soreness factor, I have had no such experience - except when picking up and going through boxes and racks of clothes as I go down in weight. Could that have contributed to your soreness?

I, like you, hate to shop. (And yes, I too am a woman, born & raised here in Dallas.) I kept everything from size 4 to size 14 - casual, business, lingerie, everything. I've been donating and selling the larger clothing because I know that I am never going back to those sizes. I will stick with MEDI and use what it has taught me instead.

On the other hand, I was reluctant to let go of my "skinny clothes" as I was gaining. That would have been admitting defeat. So, I still have an entire store's worth of clothing in various smaller sizes on rolling racks, just like a boutique. I've made it back into my size 6 jeans without holding my breath or pulling my tummy in. Just one more size to go and my main focus with turn to conditioning (fat ratios) instead of my weight or size.

On the more frustrating side, it may take a while to get these last pounds off. I ate 12 fresh raw cherries on Saturday and have been out of ketosis ever since. More frustrating because this is my PMS week, so it's already harder to lose weight with the water build-up. I will definitely discuss this with the clinic when I go for my mid-week shot tomorrow. I am hoping I don't have to go back to week 1 for some # of days, but bet that will probably be what they prescribe.

Hang in there - keep up the good work - and have a happy holiday!

-Jane

Jane, Grace, Macauley,

Thanks for the advice and support...I do tend to use a lot of deli meat just because it is so much easier (and not as dry as what I end up with when I'm trying to grill (ummm..char) a piece of meat. I'll try avoiding the deli and see if there's an improvement.

Hi 2BeHealthy-I have a thought. Maybe you're not getting enough sodium and potassium. Try some crystal light hydration in your water. I have 1 of these everyday and all my muscle aches and pains disappear. I notice that when I don't-my legs cramp up during my workouts.

Congrats to a GREAT month all!!

I was wondering where Robyn has been-I miss her!

Just a quick note- I weigh in at the fitness center at my gym at least once a week and I'm gonna BRAG-I finally got below the 150 mark!!!!
The doctor-like scale in the ladies' change room said 148 I was so thrilled!!!!
My weigh-in at Medi is on Thursday so I hope it matches up-that would be 4lbs!!!!!!

My boss gave me some of her old uniforms because she used Alli and lost 40lbs. There's good news and bad news....first the bad-they don't fit....
The good news-it's cuz they're tooooooooo big I'm definitely out of the large size and into the medium

I'm hoping the last few pounds will be gone by the endo of this month and I can join McBoo,Susie, and Hudiman......

Stick to it people,it really is "The One That WORKS"!!!!!!!!

Thanx Jane, can't wait to run into you at the clinic. I put a face to my name so look for me. Hopefully, I will look thinner than my pic, which was taken in July, that has been my weight for years now. Always maintained it at least instead of continually getting bigger. But those days of maintaining are over for now at least.

Jo - Thanks for posting the August Totals. WTG everyone and congrats, HOWARD, on being the biggest loser!!

Susie - The potato skin recipe looks AWESOME. I'm going to take it into my clinic today to see what they think about it for the acute phase. Potato skins are one of my favorite things to eat, so this would definately be a treat for me.

Congratulations, Cindy, on breaking that 150 lb mark and good luck on Thursday! You're going to be at maitenance in no time!

This weekend I had a blast baking for SIX HOURS straight! It was so much fun and I made a plethora of cookies. The best part: Giving them away to friends and family!!! Lord knows I can't eat them! Although....I do feel almost guilty giving them fat-food.....almost.

I'm finding myself not getting around to dinner until 8:30 9:00 at night because by the time I get home, changed, make sure the kids are fed and get them off to where they need to be, then get back home, its THAT late!

Is there a reason why you are not eating dinner when the children are eating theirs? Are you eating the rest of your meals on schedule, and is it just dinner that is the problem?

Jo
Jo - I work a 40 hour work week and am 30 mins. from home, so unless my husband gets around to dinner and thinks to make something that I can eat too, I'm kind of on my own. Unfortunately, most nights this doesn't happen, so the foods our kids are eating are not medi-friendly.

Additionally, my clinic has asked that I only deviate from foods in the "Very Lean" catagory once or twice a week, (and I'm not a fish eater) so I dont expect my kids to eat chicken with me almost every night of the week. This makes it even more difficult.

The rest of my meals are very much on schedule. Breakfast between 7:30/8:00 every morning. Lunch between 12:00 and 1:00....It used to be that I had dinner every night at around 6:30. This just isn't possible right now, and I'm hoping it doesn't mess up my results.

Kristin-If your choices should be from the very lean selection and you are pressed for time during the week AND your husband is not helping you with meal prep. Spend part of Sat or Sun making dinner ahead. A suggestion, the spinach quiche on medi website. I make them, pour into muffin pans and freeze when they come out. I double the recipe and add peppers and mushrooms. You can nuke when you get home and have a medi ready dinner in minutes. Also over the weekend -chop up and measure greens for a salad then you just add dressing. With planning, you can eat on time. And the little quiches can even be eaten on the run. Good luck. el

Hi all!

I went back in for my first weigh in and they asked me if I felt like I lost weight, to which I responded yep, and I BETTER have I am down 11 pds and have lost 1 inch off my waist. The nurse gave me a which was cool. I am very glad to be able to savor a veggie or two. My goodness how I have missed a salad or even some grilled asparagus.

Thanks to everyone here with all the awesome tips and encouragement for everyone. Without it I think I would have cried my way through week 1.

Off to make meal plans for the week.

Hi everyone!!!!!

I am back! I had computer issues, working tons of overtime and needless to say just wasn't logging on. I missed everyone. I have read all the posts and everyone seems to be doing well!

I am plugging along and have changed my excercise routine to include toning exercises now. Man my tummy muscles hurt. This has slowed the weight loss a bit but I am ok with it since I want to tone all this skin up!

So I promise to stay in touch here! Congrats to everyone!

If indeed the skin of a potato is "low carb" then we could make potato skins (one of my favorite foods) and even twice baked potatoes using the South Beach mock mashed potato recipe for the inside.

So I decided to do an experiment...

1. I bought a bag of baking potatoes. The label states that a 5.3 ounce potato has 110 calories, 26g carbs and 2g fiber. So I searched through the bag until I found a potato weighing 5.3 ounces.

2. I microwaved the potato and let it cool. I scooped out the insides, leaving as little potato flesh as possible. Then I weighed the insides and they weighed 4.3 ounces. Just to verify I also weighed the skins and they weighed 1 ounce.

3. I went to the internet and looked up the carb content of a baked potato without the skin. I checked several sites and these were more inline and in agreement. A 4 ounce baked potato has 100 calories, 21 carbs and 2g fiber.

4. So doing the math, 1 ounces of potato skin has around 10 calories and 5 carbs. Please note that I left almost none of the insides in the skin.

I made potato skins today and they were delicious. I sprayed the skins with butter spray and broiled them until they were golden and crisp. Then I took them out of the oven and added 1/3 ounce 75% reduced fat cheddar cheese, and 1 teaspoon of Hormel 50% reduced fat bacon bits to each one. I put them back under the broiler until the cheese melted and got slightly brown. Then I added fresh chives. I served them with 1 teaspoon each of fat free sour cream.

I would love to hear your feedback. Do you think I could be playing with fire? If this seems alright I am going to try making twice baked potatoes.
That was a lot of work but I am so glad you did that! I think your numbers are spot on. And since you are in Maintence, I don't see how that is going to affect adversely especially since you will not be eating them everyday. I look forward to the day when I can try these as well. I hope you will put this in the veggie recipe section! Maintence food that is!!!!!

YAY!!!! Just back from my weigh in and down another 3.2 lbs! That means I've hit 17.59 lbs lost since starting with Medi, and 26.59 since starting on my own the week before that. I say it every week, but man I love love LOVE this program!!!!

El- Thanks for the tips on meal planning. I'm not a huge veggie eater, but have considered making chix or something in bulk on the weekends and then refrigerating so I can just re-heat. I'm just afraid I will get bored at that point. I dunno....I'll figure something out! lol

Canned Veggies: Today my councelor and I discussed that fact that I wasn't eating veggies because I don't like fresh or frozen, and she told me canned was ok as long as it was an approved veggie. WHAT???? I thought this was a huge no-no due to all the sodium in them??? Any input? I trust my counselors and they obviously know what they're talking about, but this one threw me for a loop.

Susie - Also asked about your potato skins. She said they looked like an awesome recipe for the maitenance phase, but said us Acuters should stay away. NO POTATOES!! What a bummer! I gues its just more motivation to get to maitenance! lol.

Have a great day everyone!!!!

Canned vegetables are better than no vegetables at all. Certainly not the best choice but you said you won't eat fresh or frozen. The sodium is high in canned but you have to have some vegetables.

I found some Chicken Burgers at Costco that I was wondering if they would be Medi compliant. The only thing I see that would be considered high is the sodium. But they might be good for a once in a while fast meal I think? Any thoughts?

You can get no sodium added veggies at the store now. I know our Kroger carries alot without the added salt. I have been buying any that I do buy that way for several years.

I have been missing for a while and trying to get caught up with everyone. You are doing really great and hope you continue to have great success. I am wondering if you could do salads instead of canned veggies. The sodium is a huge issue for me, I can't put salt on anything and have to be really careful when I do use processed foods. I would hate to see you derail yourself with the canned stuff!

A small salad with lunch or dinner would cover your veggie intake and make your meal interesting as well. Also celery sticks are great with cream cheese, ground almonds, salsa etc...

Good luck
