Losing fat lbs vs. fat percentage
I'm new to Medi, just starting my second week. So far, so good. Lost 8.8 lb - 5.5 fat - in week one but only .5 fat %. I'm somwhat concerned about this. Shouldn't I have lost more %? A friend who started with me lost 6 lb but 2% fat. Should I be more focused on fat lb or fat %?

Hi Dixie and congrats on the great results.
Many of us on Medi do not have very much faith in what the Tanita scale prints out. For instance BMI should honestly be determined by caliphers or in water, not by age, weight, height, gender and activity level. Also depending on how well hydrated you are will also affect the accuracy of the values from the scale since it is sending an electrical charge through your body and measuring the resistance. Not exactly a sound science. Use the information wisely, but honestly your weight, measurements and how your clothes fit are the true indicators of success in weight loss. I don't mean to be disrespectful but I don't want you to get hung up on values from the scale! Have a great weekend Robyn

Do you both weigh the same and have the same body type? If not that is were the percentages vary. Just like the biggest loser. Someone very large can lose 15 pounds in a week and it would be a 2% weight loss. Someone lighter losing the same amount of weight it could be 5%. McBoo |

My Tanita report shows a loss of 4.99 lbs of "fat mass" and 3.8 lb of "FFM" which I was told is fat free mass. I just want to make sure I'm losing fat and not muscle. I'm averaging a daily calorie burn of 1200+ and have been told by co-workers on the plan that by eating only 500-650 calories a day, I'm going to burn protein in lieu of fat. Since I'm just getting started, I want a thorough understanding of what I need to eat. The doctor I'm seeing really doesn't seem to have a good handle on how the diet actually works. He just goes by what the standard paperwork says.

There is a whole thread about the Tanita scale. Perhaps you will find your answer in there.
