Medi-Friendly Dining Out

Hey guys, can we start a new thread with suggestions for dining out? I know there is a Medi dining guide but it's not at all comprehensive (or at least, mine isn't!). I find that I come on here asking for ideas from time to time, so having everything in 1 place would be nice.

I realize that some restaurants are regional, but I think most of us can work with that

My toddler just loves Chick Fil A and it's a favorite lunch spot for moms because of the play area. My go-to lunch there is

6 pack nuggets (either get the kids meal or get an 8 pack and give 2 away)
side salad w/carrots removed
1/3 packet Light Italian dressing
Diet Coke

By removing the carrots, this comes to around 250 calories and about 12 carbs.

The breading on the nuggets are a minefield. Also check out the dressing and read that lable very carefully. I t may be more than one serving.

At Chick Fil A I order the grilled chicken sandwich with extra lettuce and tomato. I remove the bun and cut the chicken and lettuce up.
100 calories
1.5 fat
1 carb

I love to go to Chili's and I order the kids grilled chicken platter with brocoli plain.

RE: Chick FIl A.. I'm using the meal suggestions & nutrition info in the Medi packet they gave me! Sad to say, but I have had this meal at least twice a month because it's a popular play date lunch Like I mentioned, only use about 1/3 of the dressing packet. There's way more than enough.



Another Chilis option:
Guiltless Grill Cedar Plank Tilapia (comes with plain steamed broccoli.. no butter used at the Chilis we visit)

200 cals per Chilis.com nutrition information
5g carbs

Carrabas is on the list I got from Medi, as is Chick Fil A and Mcd's nuggets.

At Carrabbas I usually get the Chicken Gratella (ask for no grill baste) and the roasted or grilled veggies on the side ( I pick out the carrots) according the the list I got from Medi, Chicken Marsala is ok too, but I have not tried that.

tracy- Just ask your clinic. They have access to them but sometimes the clinics don't print everything and make it available.

Grillsmith (Tampa Bay Fl area)

Hubby and I had dinner there last night; long wait for dinner but think we'll go back.
I was happy to see a section on the dinner menu called FITNESS PLATES
"These low-fat, low-carb spa dinner selections are served with smashed cauliflower and fresh grilled vegetables"

I have to admit I have never had smashed cauliflower before and it was very good.

No nutritional that I have found on their website; but seems like a nice alternative for some of us without allot of special requests.

On the weight watchers menu they have a Steak and Portobellos entree that is perfect portions... (minus the roasted potatoes of course) Its a 4 oz steak with mushrooms and is served with steamed veggies which is always brocoli when I order it.

Now that nutritionals are being made public, restaurants REALLY need to watch their backs. Applebee's has been slapped with a class-action lawsuit as some of its Weight Watchers dishes were tested and found to have more fat and calories than the menus claimed. Scary stuff for consumers and chains, considering the fact that the kid whipping up an entree in the kitchen probably couldn't give a rat's hat about the three extra tablespoons of oil he poured on your tilapia. Be careful, people... it's a greasy world out there.

Just wanted to update.. I did look at the dressing packet at Chick Fil A and McBoo was right, it is 2 servings per packet, 15 cal per serving. So use 1/4 of it, not 1/3 and you're in better shape

Jo- Great point overall. Use common sense.. if the dish comes out covered in butter, who cares what the menu says about the nutritional info. It all depends on the chef. Sauces on the side are always a great way to go with Medi.

Hardees Low Carb Burger and Grilled Chicken Breast

While traveling to southwest Georgia late Thursday night we discovered Hardees has low carb burgers and grilled chicken. (Potty break in Perry Fl)

Anyway on their nutritional information for the burger 420 cals and 5 carbs and the chicken is 320 cals and 10 carbs. The calories are a bit high for our diet but when traveling and in a bind these are very doable since there is no bun. They are served with iceberg lettuce as a bun and wrapped in a paper envelope for holding and drippage.

I go to Friendly's with my family and I tell them to just give me a grilled chicken breast plain. Interestingly, they only charge $2 (!) because they always seem to add it as if the item was just an extra portion to my hubby's meal (lol)

It's delicious and good for the diet

I like Chick-Fil-A's grilled chicken sandwich too with the lettuce and tomato, no bun or pickle for 100 calories. I have had there regular Chick-Fil-A sandwich as well. Their website allows you to "build your own meal" and take things off to give you just the protein calories.
I also went to Ruby Tuesday's last night and had their salad bar and it was really good too. Good salad bars are hard to find now a days.

The Hubby and I share at PF Changs and ask for no rice. We always order:

Lemon Pepper Shrimp
Spicy Green Beans

You can download their nutritional menu, just watch your sodium intake on the days you dine out. There tends to be hidden sodium, carbs, and fats everywhere. I get 40 carbs a day so it may not fit for you.

If anyone has a Doc Green's around, they're as healthy as you want to be. I personally like the carved roasted turkey with a double helping of grilled veggies. I always box half for another day and eat half then. Their website is very interactive...you can custom plan your meal before you go so you know exactly what to get when you get there. Over a Dozen Dining Out Tips

Does your favorite restaurant serve piles of tempting foods on platters rather than plates? Are the biggie-sized meals at fast food restaurants trapping you into overeating? How do you deal with a bountiful breadbasket? Eating out is fun and relaxing, but you can make it healthier. Use these tried and true suggestions the next time you lock up the kitchen and step out for a meal:

Never go out while hungry. You’ll find yourself nibbling on everything that comes your way.

Foods that are grilled, baked, steamed or broiled provide healthy, flavorful alternatives. Ask how an entrée is prepared to ensure that your selection is not swimming in butter or other fattening sauce.

For pasta selections, choose a marinara sauce instead of a white cream sauce.

Order a healthy appetizer, salad, or small-sized entrée for your meal.
Select white chicken or turkey meat rather than dark meat, and have the skin removed.

Avoid the "all you can eat" and buffet-style restaurants.

Split a meal with a friend.

Get a doggie bag before the meal and put in a portion of the food when it is first served.

Avoid foods that have been prepared in heavy cream.

Eat slowly! Put your fork down between bites. It takes the stomach about 20 minutes to realize that it is full.

Order your salad or potato with the dressing, butter, sour cream, gravy and other extras on the side.

Trim all visible fat from meat.

Select fresh fruit, sorbet or frozen yogurt for dessert.

Watch the alcohol… it is loaded with calories and can lower your defenses against food, causing you to eat more.

Beware of the breadbasket. It comes early and can be refilled several times. Ask that it be brought with the meal and limit yourself to one serving.

Water is your best beverage choice. Order diet pop, tea, and coffee with artificial sweetener. Go light on the sugar and cream.

Don’t be afraid to special order menu items.

The key is to plan what to order in advance and stick to it. Decide on your priorities before going to the restaurant and avoid looking at the entire menu. Find what you had decided on and close the issue. Then, simply do the best you can with some smart choices. If you came for the burritos, then avoid the beans and rice. If you are there for the cheesecake, order a light meal or salad, with dressing on the side. With a few simple strategies, dining out does not have to totally destroy your dieting efforts.
