Hi everyone,
I am back from Russia! It was an amazing trip and we had a great, if exhausting, time.

Diet-wise, it sucked. We were told upon landing that the Russian church would meet us with our bus and a lunch of... Subway sandwiches and chips! Awesome. It was downhill from there. The food at the camp location was TERRIBLE and meat was almost non-existant. I ate tons of carbs not because I wanted to but because there was literally no other choice at many meals. Very very starchy. I was busy all day so I'm hoping I didn't gain too much with all the activity.

It stunk because I felt like if I was going to "cheat" it should at least have been food that I enjoyed! But potatoes, rice, porridge, stale rolls.. not exactly my foods to indluge in! Oh well. I knew I would be off-plan during the week because of cultural issues, I just didn't realize how bad (in terms of quality) the food would be! It was survival for sure.

I am doing Week 1 for a few days to get back into ketosis now. My stomach has been upset all day, probably from the travel, so I'm taking it easy but looking forward to getting back into the Medi routine. The trip was well worth it though! We had an awesome time with the students.

I can say, too, that I feel much better without all the refined carbs. I felt bloated and sluggish with the meals I had there, even after adjusting to the time change. My body likes Medi much better!

Glad to be back and looking forward to catching up with you all...

Jerry - congrats on the "saggy skin" and shopping in the "regular" store! Boy I can't wait for that!

Ginny - Congrats! You are so close to goal! Every store here in NC has the CL Hydration so can't help you. I am a "couponer" so I actually have a lot of boxes of them in my stockpile and if you PM me your email or address (not sure if I can PM yet) I would be happy to send a box or 2 to you!

Silvia - Congrats on your loss! Great!

Lori - Hope your procedure goes well and you feel better soon! I would second what Susie said. Take care of your health first and do your best to stick to the plan. Eat protein and medi compliant veggies and fruit and drink lots of water. Continue to journal your food too! If you are allowed to walk around a little then do that. Any little bit will help.

Loseinit27 - Congrats on starting the program!!! Must be great that you are doing it with your mom! It's nice to have that "team" approach! About the leg cramps...I drink a Crystal Light hysdration everyday and it helps. I got one in the middle of the night and have not had one since. My clinic also suggested Powerade Zero (I just did not like the taste and the packets of CL are easier). The AS, I take my last one at 4. I was taking it later and having a hard time falling asleep which was never an issue for me. I am fine now (although I go to bed at 11:30 normally and wake up at 5:15) but at least now I am sleeping that whole time! Oh and by the way, what is your first name?

Jo - a size 10! That is awesome!

Kari - Congrats on your weight loss!!

I weigh in tomorrow and really looking forward to it! I have done great on the plan this week and worked out hard everyday but one. Still doing my running program, Couch Potato to 5K and then on the off days am doing the Jillian Michaels (from Biggest Loser) 30 day shred...that is a serious 20 minutes!!

Hope you are all having a great week! Thanks for the continued support and inspiration!
Thanks for the advise...I have since gone for my first 1 week followup and I lost 7 lbs!!!! All I can say is WOW! My mom just called me from her 1st week follow-up and she lost 5. We are so excited. Mom can't take the AS due to health risk and she also isn't as active as I so I am glad the difference didn't get her down. Plus...who would be upset with 5 pounds in one week...that is awesome!

I am Janet and the character called mom is Martha...lol, we will kinda be sharing my account since she isnt very computer savy...thanks again for the wonderful advise and encouragement!

Jessica - Glad you had such a great trip! Sorry the food was so bad (both for the plan and quality wise) but at least you are so much more aware how your body reacts to those refined carbs and how great you feel on Medi! I could not agree more about how I feel on this! You have a great plan to get back in ketosis and in the swing of things and will be feeling back to normal in no time! Good luck and welcome back!

Janet & Mom Martha - CONGRATS on the awesome weight loss. How exciting! Be sure to check out the recipes sticky's....there are some really great ones on there!

Hello all! I have not been on the computer in over a week-I had 5 pages of posts to read! My weigh in Thursday-lost .5lbs, slow but sure I will lose this last 7 lbs! Congrats to all the losers this week and the newbies-welcome! Although this time of year can be difficult with all the cookouts and such, I just plan ahead and it works fine. I am trying to stop the AS because I know it won't be long before I will not be able to take them anyway. I actually feel great without them so to those who think that is the only reason we succeedIt takes so much more than that, we are ready to change our lives. Happy anniversary Susie! Enjoy your trip, can't wait to hear all about it when you return(I hope you have a home to come back to!)Only kidding, I'm sure you raised 3 wonderful young men! My hubby is having surgery tomorrow(not serious) and we just got a new puppy(so adorable!)so I hope I get a chance to get on again soon-I missed everyone!Have a great week!

Ugh had a frustrating weigh in - 0.4 lost... But more frustrating is my clinic. They just don't seem to be interested. I felt like they think I am cheating, but I am not. In fact this week was very very clean eating (no processed foods at all), all my water plus and I exercised for 45 minutes at least every single day.

I know you guys don't like the weighing everyday, but it is one of my weaknesses. Anyway, I had been losing all week, on Saturday morning I was down 3.6 pounds. Saturday's food was a scrambled egg (Pam and nothing else), 1/2 pound snow crab legs plain (ie no butter or seasoning) and dinner was 3 oz grilled chicken breast with 1 cup salad greens, 1/4 tomato chopped, 2 tbsp mushrooms and oil/vinegar dressing. So nothing out of character or too salty or too high in calories. I also walked for 45 minutes walking approx 3.5 miles. I also drank 1.5 gallons of water, plus 1 diet coke and 2 cups of black coffee. I weigh in on Sunday morning - I have gained 5 pounds! And I feel bloated with obvious signs of water retention in my hands, feet and breast.

So Sunday I eat very very clean. Cottage cheese, hard boiled egg and another chicken salad like Saturdays. And I drink 2 gallons of water with a whole lemon in one of the gallons of water. No coffee or soda today. My offical weigh in on Monday has me back down with a loss of .4 pounds for the week.

The scale at the clinic also showed a 3 pound water gain, which is what my scale at home confirmed. But I don't understand where the water retention is coming from and the clinic says "Drink more water". I am drinking more water - 2 gallons now.

I am more frustrated that the clinic is not offering me better solutions. I feel like I am wasting my money with them but there are no other convenient clinics around.

Does anyone have any ideas for me???? I am not quiting, so I don't need that pep talk, I just need some ideas with water retention, maybe menopause ideas, supplements etc.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Hi robyn-I had a weigh-in like that last week but I also had a fat loss of 4.6lbs-what was your fat loss? I had a water gain of 2.8lbs. I also had no changes in my diet and was definitely not cheating.
Susie encouraged me and said the water would probably go this week.
Makes me wonder if you have a large fat loss, you retain the water for a few days??

Just giving you support because I'm as puzzled as you are right now.

McBoo....where are you

Hi Cindy

Thanks! I looked at my print outs:

Weigh in last week was 5.2 pounds lost, TBW down 3 pounds, Fat mass down 1.2
Weigh in this week was 0.4 pound lost, TBW up 1.4, Fat mass down 2.8

Very puzzling indeed!

Robyn,

The food and water looks good but the exercise may be too much. You absolutely need to have a rest day in there. Also, are you doing the same exercise every day? You need to change it up to "trick" your body so it can't anticipate what is coming next.

Gretta - Great job on the WL! Getting so close to goal!

Dee - Awesome Job! I am sure you are very excited and proud of yourself...you should be...especially with your dental drama!

Robyn - You still did lose so that is good...and you lost some fat so that is good too. I am newer than you so not sure if my advice will help but my suggestions would be....
* Can you drink too much water? 2 gallons is a lot! Good for you for getting all that down!
* Given the fact that you are exercising every day (by they way I agree with McBoo...you need a rest day in between...or if you do Cardio one day, the next just do crunches etc) are you eating enough calories? I did not calculate your calorie intake but it does not sound like you are getting enough. Maybe your body is going into starvation mode and holding on to whatever it can. I know on days I work out (I am slowly training for a 5k) I am eating about 600-700 calories. On days that I am not I am sticking to the 500 protein, veggies/fruit and a healthy fat (plus all my water of course)

I am really sorry your clinic is not supportive of you! That is a shame! You have everyone here (and lots of people smarter than I)! You have done SO GREAT so far! Keep up the good work! (okay...I know you said you did not want a pep talk...so that was just a small one!)

Robyn;

I agree with McBoo. If you are doing the same routine, your body gets used to it and figures out ways to save energy. My routine is:

Tues, Thurs, Sat: 30 minutes biking, 45 minutes weights
Wed, Fri, Sun: Walk 3-4 miles (60-70 minutes)
Mon: DAY OF REST!

Something I found on-line;
"Our exercise expert, Steve Cabral, suggests that if exercise is not currently a part of your weight loss efforts, adding exercise is a great way to break through a plateau. If you're already exercising, Steve suggests that, instead of doing more of what you are currently doing, you should:

"throw your old program directly out the window. You have to switch things up and force your body to keep up with your new routine. This means that your mind and body are going to have to figure out how to handle the new weights, exercises, reps, tempo, or all four. By literally shocking your body with new techniques you're going to burn more calories and speed up your metabolism.

For example, if you're someone who is used to do long cardio sessions on the treadmill or elliptical, then hop off and start doing some shorter sprints. Better yet, get your heart rate pumping by including some squats, deadlifts, lunges, or step-ups to burn calories, boost your metabolism, and tone your muscles all at the same time.

Lastly, if you switch up your program every 4 weeks you'll be far more successful at never hitting a plateau again!"

Maybe some of you experts can weigh in on my theory when there shows a water gain...

I read that you lose fat from your fat cells but the cells then hang around deflated. When you are on a diet and fat is released from your fat cells, your body initially replaces the fat in the cells with water. It will hang on to the water for a few days and then gives up and releases it. My theory is when we show a water gain at weigh-in, could it be that the extra water is from the water holding in our fat cells? I read that is why the scale alone is always not the best measure of our weeks efforts. Also explains the "wooshes" of weight loss we have experienced. Does this make any sense?

That's my story and I am stickin' to it! What do you think?

Robin,

I'm so sorry for the disappointment this week.

You know I'm new so I don't have anything of any consequence to add.

Of the 4lbs I lost most of it was water , when last week my whole thing was don't drink too much cause I'm retaining i don't know. I'm just trying to follow the program to the best of my ability and I'll take whatever.

I'm sorry that your clinic is not more supportive that to me is essential. I love that my Dr. and the workers at the clinic are very supportive. They take their time with you and explain everything to a fault , they really make me feel that they want me to succeed.

Feel better about everything and thank you for all your support.

New to Program, ready to take the leap!

I am so excited and so glad to have found this board. I am 54 and have been a great weight, with the exception of the 10-20 lbs pendulum over the years. In fact I used to teach aerobics and fitness.

In 2003 I had a major back surgery, moved to AZ in 2006 and started a new, very high stress job. The lbs just started coming on and I went from 155 to 220 in about a year. I have struggled with the exercise aspect as my back is still not very good, and now have FINALLY hit that point where I MUST do something.
My choice is Medi Weight Loss. I did a lot of research about different programs and my DR recommended a low carb diet and said she felt this would be good for me. My first appointment is this Thursday, so I will start Friday morning with a new attitude and a new lease on life.

My choice is Medi Weight Loss. I did a lot of research about different programs and my DR recommended a low carb diet and said she felt this would be good for me. My first appointment is this Thursday, so I will start Friday morning with a new attitude and a new lease on life.
you found a great site for help and support!!!

Robyn- I feel odd about our clinic too. They are pleasant but they always seem surprised when I lose weight and don't seem to have much to offer I am having success, so I'm not going to stop going there, but they don't seem to contribute much at this point. I did get the impression that they assume a lot of people cheat on the diet. They are always SHOCKED when I lose every week. The Dr even told me to slow down... huh?

I'm just going to use them for accountability for now and rely on you guys for the rest. Like I said, they're pleasant, but just don't go any further than that unfortunately.

Twins: Makes sense to me. It would explain my wild variances between fat loss and water loss. Will ask Dr. Cobb about this theory!

I guess I'm lucky! My clinic (Dr. Cobb and all of the nurses) is very supportive. Dr. Cobb even talks on the phone and via e-mail semi-regularly with me.

Grace,

Thank you for posting your theory with some science. I have experienced this week after week. I almost always followed a big week with a small week, however the small week would show fat loss and water gain. I think you just explained it, thank you!

I do not worry when it is a water gain because I know it is temporary, especially with us females. Robyn, glad to hear you are not discouraged. I equate weight loss with the stock market (not the recent trends, but the traditional trends). You need to look at your weight loss over a period of time and not week to week or day to day. It is the trend that counts. I equate water weight to the day sellers. As long as you are drinking and not eating too much sodium, ignore it! BTW, Kate, excellent advice. I thought you were right on.

That said, I am having my first weigh-in after my first month of maintenance. I have kept my weight steady all month. As luck would have it, I started my TOM today and will show about a 2-3 pound gain tomorrow. It's okay because I know why.

Jerry and McBoo, you are absolutely right about exercise. I switched from doing a weight circuit with machines to changing it up every day with free weights. I did the circuit for 2 years and after the initial change in my arms and legs, noticed no change after that. By changing the weight lifting routine every other day my arms and legs are the best they've ever been. I do weights M-W-F-S and cardio M-W-F , which I switch between spinning and deep water aerobics.

I'll try to post tomorrow, but leave early Thursday, so probably won't post after that. Good luck to all the Newbies and congrats to all the losers, who are all winners to me.

God Bless,
Susie

OK, I'm getting a little discouraged here. I got a call from my ENT today telling me that the sinus infection I have been battling for over a month now was positive for strep pneumonia in the culture. I finished my 4th course of antibiotics this weekend and it's still not gone (I can feel the congestion/pain). I follow up with him Thursday but at my last appt he said that if the meds didn't kick in, I was headed for sinus surgery.

Please, has anyone had success sticking to the diet during surgery or health issues? I am getting frustrated, not with the diet (THRILLED with the results!) but because this stupid sinus issue keeps cropping up. I've been told to lay off exercise because of it, and now facing anesthesia and feeling cruddy during recovery. Any encouragement please?? I refuse to give up this WOE but it would be nice to hear if others have been able to hang in there when things got hairy.

McBoo had his appendix removed in the course of his weight loss and did fine. I think you have to focus on your illness and recovery and let Medi take a back seat. Just think how much easier the program will be once you are not constantly battling health issues. If you can do this with the obstacles you were under, you will have no problem following it once you are on the road to good health. Good luck to you and I will be praying for a successful outcome.

Susie- I am afraid to let Medi take a backseat I have been working so hard to lose the 43 pounds that I have lost and I don't want to give that up. This is the first time in my life that I have had success at losing weight. I cannot go backwards!

I'm going to talk with my ENT on Thursday and see what he says.

As Susie stated I had my appendix removed recently. Yes you will probably gain a few pounds back due to anesthesia and lack of exercise. You will also probably want some comfort food the first couple of days after the surgery. Do the best you can but don't let it get out of hand. You have to take care of yourself. You will get right back on plan as soon as it is possible. Food wise it may be a few days, exercise maybe a few more. You can survive this.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

McBoo

Thanks McBoo. I refuse to give up on the weight loss because of this. I have worked too hard the past 3 months for that. We'll see what the ENT says, but I'm going to push for him to allow me to continue the plan as closely as possible. I'm also thinking of trying acupuncture before I agree to any sugery.. just to see, you know? I have heard of people having some success with that. Not quite the same as your appendix, though
