The first week can be a bit of a bear - think of it as carb detox. I promise - it gets much easier!!

Are you allowed to have less than or greater than 10 carbs for the first week? I think my nurse made a mistake when she wrote greater than 10 carbs for the first week.
Thanks!

Melody- of course, everyone's plan is sometimes different, but I was told 10 grams or less of carbs for week one. Probably give your clinic a quick call tomorrow to be sure : )

Just poking my nose here and to let you know that you can do it. However, like everything else you must want to do it. It was certainly tough for me as many others here. As a personal journey, I did take it one meal at a time and each day at a time because I wanted to do it. It was tough and had the shakes and the nausea but as each day progresed it became easier as routine started to set in and my stomach did not rule the day. In all I lost 68 lbs which was my goal and since then have managed to lose another 6 lbs (goes a few lbs either way). So set your mind on it, follow the program to a T and do not despair! You can lean on many folks here so use this group for support.

Go for it!

I spent the weekend at my SIL's and she planned a big dinner for yesterday afternoon. Lots of family and tons of food and drink. And since we were staying there, I had to smell everything cooking most of the day! But to my huge surprise, it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I sat away from the table and nibbled on some almonds, and when the meal came out I stuck to some sliced ham and a little string cheese.

I felt badly that I didn't help much (the only task I took on was shredding the cabbage for cole slaw, which I didn't eat), but no one seemed to mind. Everyone commented on my baggy jeans, and several people asked about the program. I talked quite a bit about this site, and how helpful it's been to me to read other's challenges and advice.

The only time I almost cracked was when the desserts came out, but I went outside (it was a beautiful day in CT) and sat in the sun for awhile. Shortly after that it was time to come home.

Every day I am more and more aware of how much of this journey is about personal choice and taking control of my life. A month ago, a day like yesterday would have been an eating binge for me. Instead, when I looked at the food all I could think of was how unhealthy most of it was, and feel a little embarassed at that rate at which I used to shovel that type of food into my mouth. When we got home my DH complimented me on my willpower and told me it's time to put on a smaller pair of jeans!

I did indulge in some red wine Saturday night, but kept it small and it didn't seem to effect my level of ketosis. I didn't check until this morning, but the level was still large so I'm going to assume that the damage was minimal.

All in all a good weekend, and an affirmation that a change in my relationship with food was long overdue!

Like many here, I have been lurking around this site, reading so many success stories. Well, I had my initial consultation today, and I am so looking forward to getting healthy (and staying that way!)
ps. Am very envious of those of you with Trader Joes AND Whole Foods, I'd kill for either!

Am I being silly?

I had my first weigh in today and I am down 8.5 pounds. This sounds fabulous in theory, but I only lost .5 in fat!!! Eights pounds were water. I really wish they didn't tell me the fat loss!

I feel very discouraged but I know I would be THRILLED if I never knew the fat amount. Did anyone else have similar results the first week (little fat loss)?

Please do not misunderstand. I am sticking with the program regardless of how I feel at the moment.

Thanks for any advice.

Don't let it get you down, just make sure that you're drinking all of your water each day - it's a ton! My first week, I lost about 1/2 and 1/2, the next three weeks were pure fat and then after that, some water again. It really does vary week to week.

Also, if you were used to eating a lot of salty foods and that changed, that will let a lot of water go, too.

I just wanted to check in with the newbies...come join us in the October thread! Today I posted that it is 5 months exactly since my Day 1 of Week 1, and I am down 79.2 lbs. If you set your mind to this program, anything is possible. Use all the tools that the program teaches you, and you will be amazed with the results. If someone had told me at my initial appt that 5 months later I would be wearing baggy size 12's (seeing as how I was there wearing size 22) I would not have believed them. Yes, its hard...yes, there are those cravings sometimes...yes, there are the missteps along the way - but pick yourself right up and continue along with Medi. It is so worth it!

Thanks, Kelly! I need to snap out of this and realize a loss is a loss, no matter what! I am sure I will see more fat lost next week.

I have been drinking all of my water and more. I don't have a problem with that aspect, thank goodness.

Congrats on your great work and losses!

Introduction!

I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts and it has partially inspired me to tackle my weight loss. I've never been skinny... usually weighed in around 160, but I was really happy and athletic. I got sick with mono and two months later had gained 35lbs not eating anything different. I was then diagnosed with thyroid disease. It was very tragic for me because I was about to get married and my family is very "health" and "looks" conscience. Needless to say I got a lot of comments about my weight! Don't you just love family and how they say just what they are thinking? Luckily I have a fantastic, supportive husband. This past year weighing in around the 200 mark I was tired feeling like no matter what I did I couldn't lose the weight so I decided to stop trying.... I just at what I wanted. Now I am realizing I have become a slave to food and am excited to get control over my emotional eating. I am on my first week of Medi and am realizing how much food controled my life. I've been so encouraged by all of your posts and am looking forward to my first weigh in on Thursday! I just thought I would introduce myself!

By the way... does anyone else have problems not going over 10 carbs? I've been hitting 10-13 to get my calories.

I understand totally. My first week I lost 12.6 pounds, but only .6 of it was fat - but since then it has only been a total of .2 in water and 30.9 in fat. Just so you know.

Thanks for sharing! That helps me a lot. That is pretty incredible that you only lost .2 in water the whole time. Great job on the 31 pound loss, fabulous!

I will see what happens at my next weigh-in on Tuesday.

Welcome to this fabulous forum. I am a newbie but I have perused many, many threads here and it has been so helpful!

Guys tend to lose a lot more weight faster than women (don't even get me started, only kidding), so you should do very well, too!

One tip that was a lifesaver for me the first week was to have College Inn low fat - low sodium chicken broth. One whole carton is only 20 calories. I put dried chives in it (not sure if that is completely kosher, but it didn't seem to hurt me) and it sure is yummy! I am only on week two and still have a cup or two of the soup to tide me over.

Best of luck to you!

Lara

Today I have the hungry horrors!!! Don't know what brought it on, but it's been a rough one. Fortunately I have a fridge in my office with only Medi-friendly snacks, but it's going to be a rough night at home with all the kid snacks in the pantry! And tomorrow will be a big test... I have my week 3 weigh in first thing in the am (which I'm looking forward to!) but I have a root canal scheduled for the afternoon... exactly the kind of thing that in the past would send me running for the comfort food (I'm a bit dental-phobic!). Come to think of it, maybe that's the trigger behind the hunger pangs... hmm...

Hello everyone! I am on day 5 of week 1, and my ketone level is registering between "small" and "moderate" (that is, if I'm reading the darned thing right). Is this normal? I have been faithful to my plan, inluding my water intake...just wondering.

Been on a 2 month break from Medi. After thinking I can do this on my own and researching other similar plans.....I could have been at my goal!! LOL

Seriously, some factors have prevented me from getting back into the weekly weigh-ins but I am returning next week. My clinic said when I told them I needed to take some time off, I may need to have my blood work taken again for a nominal fee. I would never have to pay the initial start up fees though. Does anyone know how much time has to go by before that becomes a possibility? They are already gone today so I will call them Monday to be sure.

Stacey....thanks for sharing e-mealz! What a cool site!

It sure seems to be. People are all over the place with those sticks. If you're seeing anything in that range, you're doing great.

Honeybee! One thing I've learned here (this site) is that normal is different for each of us.... however, during my first week & thereafter, I've registered anywhere from negative to moderate. Usually I'm in the small range. A warning that I learned awhile back ~ if you start registering negative a lot, check your sticks. If they are gray-ish colored, they're no good, so toss them. Also, they're much cheaper at the drug store than the clinic (I get the CVS brand ). Glad you're here!!

I was at my clinic on Friday, and they told me the "ideal" level for ketosis is moderate. I thought that higher was better, but she said that being in high ketosis probably means you're dehydrated. So it looks like you're right on track!

First Week in the Books!

To Ann and Kelly and DivaDeb, thank you for the info on the ketone sticks; I finally arrived at moderate on Sunday. I had my first weigh-in today, and I lost 8.3lbs. Although only a pound or so was fat, I'm thrilled, because I've seen a pound of fat, and it's a lot!
