I will be going to my first appointment on Monday. I've been looking at the products online (shakes, protein bars, and supplements) and was wondering if anyone can give me the low down on them. I'm just trying to figure out what is going to best help me and which ones I can do without. If anyone knows any prices of the products, that would be great too! Thanks!

to you and all the Newbies! You have picked an amazing program.

I'm not sure how much they cost, but I would use those things sparingly and for convenience. You get so much more bang for your buck when you eat real, freshly prepared foods. Plus you learn how to eat real food. This is not a diet with diet bars and diet protein drinks, but a Way of Life, WOL, WOE.

Reposting for the Newbies

Newbies

I will apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I really want to help you. You will not be sorry you did this program. I too had tried everything out there over 16 years including Weight Watchers (which I had been successful with in the past) and Nutrisystem and was still carrying my maternity weight of my 16 year old son plus some. I started the program a week before Thanksgiving because I did not want to gain the annual 5-7 holiday pounds. I was done being fat! Anyway, 7 months later I hit goal, having lost 62 pounds, and have been on maintenance ever since. During the acute phase I never had a week where I didn't lose something, but sometimes it was .2 pounds. Please look at the big picture and do not get disappointed with the week to week losses because this program will get you to goal if you commit and follow it. Your losses will vary week to week. You will have big weeks and small weeks. Do not obsess over it. Just have faith and believe.

If you look at the marketing materials you see that Medi is allowed to make the claim "results typical". I have never seen this claim with any other program. Even Weight Watchers is required to print "results not typical". And following this forum you will see person after person losing! This program is one of a kind. Jerry has lost 200 pounds since January!!! You really need to read his blog at Watch Me Lose 300 Pounds

Here are my recommendations...

Tips for Success

1. The program is so restrictive in the beginning, if you are physically able, take the appetite suppressant. They will make all the difference in the world. If after taking them you are still hungry bring this up with your clinic doctor and they may be able to adjust the dose and schedule. In the beginning they can affect your sleep, but you will learn a schedule that works for you and your body will adjust. Some of us found that we no longer needed them towards the end of the program.

2. Please read the first several pages on the Newbie thread, Welcome Newbies! Helpful info for week 1.. This thread is meant as a reference. Please post comments on the monthly thread, Shedding Pounds in September w/Medi Weightloss, for September. It changes month to month. This is where we all hang out.

3. The AS can give you a nasty dry mouth, which leads into my next recommendation, always carry water and drink, drink, drink WATER. I would suggest you limit your diet sodas and diet ice teas as this will cut into your water intake. Water is so important for your success. I struggle with leg cramps, so I highly recommend drinking one Crystal Light Hydration or equivalent electrolyte beverage a day.

4. Limit your intake of processed foods, even if they are Medi friendly, as they are higher in sodium and other unhealthy chemicals. These products are good for convenience when you are strapped for time or do not have a kitchen available, so I suggest you use them in this way. When I am traveling I always take with me beef jerky, string cheese, cocoa almonds, EAS Advantedge protein drinks and power pops (which I buy on ebay... they are lollipops that have hoodia in them, only one per day).

5. This is a Way Of Life, Way Of Eating, WOE . You need to learn how to make it work in your lifestyle and how to make it satisfying. Once past week one, experiment with recipes. Figure out what you really want and look on the recipe thread for something that might satisfy that need, or modify how you would normally make that food by eliminating the bread and the carbs. I highly recommend that you experiment with Oopsie rolls... the things you can make with them are endless. The secret to staying on plan is staying satisfied.

6. Make sure you include variety in your menu. Do not eat the same things day in and day out. This leads to boredom and cheating.

7. Do not let yourself get hungry. You need to keep your blood sugar even throughout the day. Eat several mini meals.

8. Commit to this program. Do not give yourself permission to cheat. NOT EVEN ONE BITE! Think about how much you are paying and why you started this in the first place. Do you want this to be another failed attempt or do you want to succeed? Look at all the people that have been successful on this program. If I can do it SO CAN YOU!

9. Journal, journal, journal. Unless you journal you will not what works for you and what does not. The site I use to journal is LIVESTRONG.COM - Health, Fitness, Lifestyle | LIVESTRONG.COM. There are other sites as well. Sadly, even Medi friendly foods can sometimes send you out of ketosis. For more on ketosis go to Ketosis. We all have different chemistries and react differently to different foods. When you journal you can see what behaviors/foods lead to successful weeks and what behaviors/foods lead to disaster.

10. Keep reading and posting to this thread. There are so many people here to help you. We all really care!

11. Find an exercise program that works for you. Cardio and weights are especially important. Weights build muscle, firm and tone, and increase metabolism. Cardio increases metabolism, burns calories, improves endurance and is good for your heart. Do not use your exercise as an excuse to eat off program or overindulge. Your clinic may increase your calories to account for you exercise, but you still need to stick to the plan.

12. Please, please, please eat the recommended amount of calories. If you only eat 295 calories your body will think it is starving and your metabolism will shut down... and you will not lose. The number of calories varies from clinic to clinic, depending on your starting weight, medical conditions, and your activity level. If they tell you to eat 700 calories, eat 700 calories. Medi is proven and they know what they are doing. Trust them!

I suggest that you not start a new thread unless it is something that will be referenced over and over. We do not want to sticky every thread and if there are to many threads, the important ones get buried. You can however do a search on any thread. Thanks for your response and the welcome! I'm definitely glad that I found this forum.

I totally agree with you about the food. I guess I was wondering more about the supplements and vitamins. I know that it is important to get all the right nutrients but was wondering if you buy them at the clinic or if you buy similar vitamins and supplements and the drug store or what???

Week 1 they will provide a multi-vitamin, calcium, fat burner, a vitamin B12 injection, and a B1/B6 injection (which burns). After the first month only the vitamins and B12 shot are included. Many of us buy a green tea fat burner at Costco. The multi-vitamin they provided is especially designed for the program and is recommended.

They will give you a packet of information. Read it and re-read it. Keep it in a convenient place for reference.

Please let us know how the visit goes, if you have any questions, or if you need help getting through week 1.

I go once a month, but it is completely up to you. I don't think McBoo goes at all anymore, but he has been on maintenance much longer. I have been on maintenance for 3 months.

Don't be surprised that the diet has been easy. This diet is clear, simple and easy for those who choose to commit to follow it as it is (not so easy for those who try to work their way "around" the straightforward structure). I do go to the one in Richardson. Today was the 3rd day and I feel wonderful. This was my first time going to play 18 holes of golf and I was worried that I would get weak but it was actually reverse.

I had my 160C breakfast before hitting out and packed me two bags of snacks one was 100C Medi bar and the other was 80c Beef Jerky. I snacked on those throughout the 4.5 hours round and 54Oz of water. It was just perfect.

Hi all! Just started on Saturday after 1st appt. on Friday. So far, not too bad...no real cravings and no dire hunger. I am only at the end of day 2, but tested ketosis earlier this afternoon. I was pretty sure I was there based on a sickly-sweet taste in my mouth...one I've had in ketosis before. Mid-day two and already moderate ketosis, so I guess that's good.
I've wanted to do Medi for over a year, but just now felt like I could spare the money. I have PCOS, am IR, and have fatty liver disease, so I hope this will help with those conditions.
Anway, just wanted to introduce myself and not be a lurker any more.

On a side note, Harris Teeter has $2 off the 32 oz. College Inn broth with the VIC card from Sept. 30 through Oct. 6!

I meant to get back and post my first weigh in right after my appt, but better late than never I guess - I weighed this past Monday and was down 9.4 my first week. I actually was alittle disappointed - I cheated at home and weighed myself and I thought it was going to be over 10 lbs - but everyone at the clinic was extremely encouraging and said I had a fantastic first week. Week two so far has been great. Headaches seem to be tapering off and I got back veggies!! I don't think I have ever been so excited to eat a salad in my whole life! I also have gotten some fantastic ideas from everyone here - I tried a great one this morning - for breakfast I had celery stuffed with a wedge of the Laughing Cow cheese - it was heavenly and only 35 calories (since celery is a freebie).

CAGirl and Carolina Girl - I have my appts at Ballantyne on Fridays too! We probably have passed each other and didn't realize it! Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the info - the Medi clinic that I attend said that I only needed to track my protein calories. They gave me a list of acceptable condiments and said that I could have 2 servings of vegetables (or 1 veggie/1 fruit) and gave me a list of acceptable veggies and fruits and their serving sizes. They also said that iceburg lettuce and celery were freebies. I certainly didn't take that to mean that I could/should eat it all day, everyday. Sorry for the confusion.

Follow what you clinic has told you. Each clinic is a bit different. Of course you will eat your celery and iceberg within reason! Good luck and keep posting!

I had a little sneak peek at my weight today, we'll see how true it holds. I've been rather sick the last couple of weeks and went to the doctor today...of course, they weighed me. With clothes on, I was down 7 pounds so I'm hoping it's around 9 tomorrow .
