What is a "maintenance extra charge appointment"?
Hi Erin,
See this thread, my post #779. She said that I should be getting 40% of my calories from protein (480 cal); 40% from carbs, which includes fruits (480 cal); 20% from healthy fats and "other" calories. That's based on my 1200 cal daily "allotment". It was a briefer appt than I thought it would be, last month I was told it would be about 2 hours; lasted about 50 minutes instead and I saw an RN who does this stuff all the time at the clinic. I had to make sure to ask questions so I would understand. Cost was $125 and I was "given" also Vit B12 sublingual tabs and Fat Burners.

I am not very happy with my clinic in regards to maintenance. I gained 0.2 pounds at my last Wellness appointment and was asked if I wanted to go back onto the acute program. I found that insulting since I was still under where I called goal and I don't consider 0.2 pounds a gain when you are in wellness. Was I expected to continue losing weight in wellness?

Oh my gosh. It's bad enough that many of us are hard on ourselves for every ounce changed... but to have them doing that to you? Drink another 20 ounces of water and you can easy put on a few ounces. I hate it, but no matter how you track every calorie -- weight loss/gain is not an exact science.

I never had a breathing test.

I stopped going monthly after four months in maintenance because I watch the scale and keep tracking my intake on Livestrong. It's worked well. It gets old tracking my food and exercise, but it keeps me on track.

Had an off day today, but will fix it tomorrow.

When I reached my goal about a month ago, I had every intention of going for monthly weigh-ins, but haven't made it back since...I have a scale and weigh every day...have actually lost a couple more pounds, so at this point, don't feel like I want to shell out the $35/visit. For Christmas, I've asked for a body analysis scale similar to what they use at Medi; that shows your fat/water numbers...they can be found fairly inexpensively $50-60, even Target carries them online. (That being said, I may change my tune after the holidays if anything changes)

Hi nene ~ since I'm going into the every-other-week, then once a month visit mode, I ordered the Tanita BF680W scale on Amazon for $56.95. As you said, it shows the fat and water numbers... and it HAS to be more accurate than my old KMart scale! The clinic NP said to start weighing every day. I like your thought that it may not be necessary to go every month if one can monitor closely and keep a consistent weight range. I may consider that AFTER the holidays!!

Had my appointment today. I was up a fraction in fat. Down 3 lbs water from over a month ago. Now, to me up .2 in fat means I'm maintaining... no? My calories were scrutinized though and they said my intake was too high based on the little slip of paper that says I should be at 1300. I've been getting that response since June but yet I've lost 9 lbs since then. I can VERY easily eat 1800 calories a day when I'm going to the gym 4 days a week and if I'm not, I'm right around 1600 or so. Or really, I waffle between 1400/1600. Also, it seems like at every appointment, they're surprised I'm in maintenance. "Oh! You're in Wellness? Congrats!" Huh? It messes with my head when they're surprised - like I'm thinking, "Do they feel like I should lose more???" Also, one appointment I got chastised for losing 2 lbs while on maintenance and then the last 2 times, I got in "trouble" with my calories answer.

Also, it took a few visits to realize I never even received information on Wellness. Only the transition phase. Never did the breathing test. Never did follow up bloodwork. Did yall do this??

I love my clinic. I love the people there. I like the print outs that tell me exactly what my body is doing. But I leave thinking, I paid $35 for this?
I agree with all of this! I really only kept paying to go in hopes that I would get the breathing test...and it kept NOT HAPPENING. I never received any materials other than transition either. I wanted to continue going for the monthly visits but they kept telling me I needed to come every 2 weeks when I was sure I should have been on monthly. I actually had to request a monthly appt...and I made it and never went. The whole situation kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. I wanna go back or maybe to a different clinic. The highlight of the whole program for me was the metabolism test....I really wanted to do that. My clinic at the time told me that I should have another round of bloodwork done because my thyroid numbers were "close to abnormal". Now, I never claim to be a medical expert but I am ok at reading bloodwork since I can adequately do it in the veterinary field..and everything looked pretty normal to me. I also have a physical scheduled shortly after my appt and I mentioned this to my primary care physician (covered by insurance). She told me everything looked great. She had to do bloodwork for the physical anyway and when it came back, my thyroid was fine. This is where I started feeling like it was about profit. While I was in acute, I genuinely believed they wanted to help me be successful but at this point, I felt like they just wanted to try to milk me for more money.

In my last appt I had the metabolism breath test and lab work drawn. I have been taking the Fat Burners again, and I think that is helping with my slow metabolism that was diagnosed at that visit. I will go to my appt a week from tomorrow to find out lab results, etc. I don't know how long I'll continue to pay to go. I know it works, even if I'm not counting and strict. Besides, I'm curious to see what they end up doing the photos they took of me (corporate MWL). In the photo album I have here are 2 pictures (of Lea and me together) I took with my own camera on the day Lea and I had our photos taken by the professional photographer and the MWL folks from FL.

The photos look awesome!!!!! I like the one where you guys are looking at each other and laughing, so pretty! I wonder if they will put your picture in one of the magazines or on the website. That would be cool.

I stopped taking the medi fat burners a while ago but kinda wanted to take them again.....I wonder if I can just walk in and buy them or if I have to be "active"? Same goes for the Medi bars....I really like them and I think you get a lot of bar for only 100 calories...I just wish they weren't so pricey. I just felt like it was a waste of my money to get my blood drawn there again when I could just go to my PCP and pay only a co-pay. I should call and see if another location has the metabolism test and if I can pay for just that.....hmmm.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind selling you the Fat Burners or bars. It is $ in their pockets and giving you product you know you like! If nothing else, that probably goes towards your "chart" too and then if you decide to come in for a weigh in sometime I wonder if they would count those?

I had the breathing test done yesterday and found it very informative. Will have to wait and see about whether the info. is accurate. My clinic encouraged me to use the meta melts and fat burners (if I decided against the shots of course) and not the stay slim. I realize that this is a business so yes they will encourage meto use their products but as aggravated as I have been with my clinic, I do feel that they are being supportive of my goals. I plan on going back every month for just the accountability if nothing else. I will continue to purchase the fat burners because I DO feel that they are worth the cost. I will probably end up purchasing B6&B12 sublinguals to replace the meta melts once I have time to research them like I did the calcium and omega pills.

Just a quick update. Like everyone else I have been super busy and haven't been able to get online nearly as much.

Went to my maintance appt today and was up 1lb which is fine with me. I endulged a little over Thanksgiving week so I was expecting it, and I am not dissapointed. I went back to week one eating yesterday to purge the carbs out of my system. The clinic suggested I stay low cal (800 or so) and acute type eating, during the week and if I have holiday parties to go to on the weekend, to endulge on something simple at that time making sure to get in exercise on those days. So that's what I've been doing and it seems to work great!

Hello everyone! It has been awhile for me on this site, life seemed to get incredibly busy! I have so much reading to do and posts to catch up on,but I just wanted to post real quick. I started transition this past week, with a loss of 93 lbs. I had been trying to lose 95, but these last 2 lbs are really stuck! I was getting very aggravated - down .6 lbs, up .4 lbs, over and over so the decision was made this past week to begin transition and see if this is perhaps where my body is most comfortable. I think I will be okif those last 2 lbs don't go - my initial goal was a size 10, never a weight goal and now I'm a 8/10.

Transition is so hard though, it seems so scary to start adding starches. Tonight I had 1/4 cup of whole grain brown rice with a chicken stir fry, and it felt so strange. I feel like it's a lot of food to eat every day too, but I feel pretty good not taking the AS. We shall see!

Hope everyone had wonderful holidays and I hope to be around a lot more now that life has settled back down....I missed everyone here! Time to try and read to catch up!

After 1 day of acute, I'm already back down to 125. Cravings are still not under control though. What a battle! I was 121 at one point so I think I'll aim to try and stay around 120. My original goal was 130 so technically I never went over that but my pants are too tight at that weight so I think I'll change it to 125. Especially given that I flipped out when I was over it. lol

Have a great day everyone. I'm so thankful for all of you.

No! They were probably reacting to a percieved notion by many that any gain is bad but I think you are fine!

Totally agree! I vary about 4-5 pounds up or down on any given month. Pretty stable for the most part...but definitely know that what goes in my mouth results in a number on the scale...for good or ill..it is always my choice. And my clinic is well aware of this...and as long as the variance is no more than this - it is all good.

I still go in on a monthly basis or every two weeks if I am having a rough time. I have an very supportive clinic who knows me extremely well and works with me all the way! I consider myself most fortunate.

Jo

Don't forget that water easily goes up and down by pounds... So one day you may not have drank as much water, another you may retain more... gotta give yourself room for stuff like that. It doesn't mean you've gained a pound of fat.

My clinic said last week that since I am now at goal weight, a 2 lb gain/loss would still be considered "being at goal" since we can vary day to day, or even time of day. (Never mind the typical 4-5 lbs I differ depending on the time of the month.....but, at least I know that's water weight!).

With that said - I still get on the scale every morning and if I see any gain I do panic a little. Then I really watch my food and water intake that day until the numbers go back where I want them.

It was too stressful to do a daily weigh in. Been doing weekly (or less if it's too cold to get naked on the scale in the morning) and it's been working well. I'm one of those who makes a big deal out of every ounce even though I know better.

After moving indoors due to cold weather (to me anything under 55 degrees so I'm unable to jog and bicycle outdoors) I've gained and find myself way overgoal. Began week 1 again today. I appreciate the accountability here. I know I didn't get all my water in today while at work. Guess I need to drink more earlier in the morning prior to leaving for work. What do you all do during an 8 to 10 hour shift? BTW, I'm not at a desk, I'm up working with patients or my nursing students constantly. Thanks!

Was MIA - but now I am back

Hello, my old friends and all new people on this forum! I was missing in action for the past couple of months - busy with work, family, etc. I was reading some posts from time to time and every time when I saw a post about somebody reaching their goals I felt so happy for them but did not have the time to post my congratulations. Keri, I remember when you started and your struggles - and now look at your beautiful self. Great job!
OK, here is what was happenning with me - I am officially in wellness since December 21st, having lost 114 lb in 11 months on MWL. I was able to maintain 139-140 lb weight for about 2 months with some ups and downs, no more than 4-5 lb. Enjoyed exercises (got to the point of jogging 5 miles nonstop), my new self in nice clothes, my energy, etc. Whenever I saw my weight creep up, I immediately worked to get it down. Then something changed and suddenly I am struggling. I started allowing myself foods that I did not touched in 11 months, now forcing myself to go to the gym, gained about 10 lb in 10 days between Christmas and New Years. In my mind I was thinking - oh, that's OK, I can always go on week one and lose it. I made excuses that we are having a horrible winter, holidays, etc. I started week one on January 3 and did modified week one (protein and veggies) for 5 days and lost 5 lb but I just don't have the motivation to continue - and I have gained a couple of them back. I am off AS, of course, and I am feeling hungry, have cravings, may be it is "winter blues" - I don't know.
Debbie, I see that you are struggling too with the weight gain. What makes things worst is that we are going to all-inclusive vacation in a week. If I cannot lose it here, when I am in control, what will be happenning there when everybody around you is eating and drinking all the time.
I need help - this forum helped me in the darkest moments of my weight loss journey when things were getting out of control - so I am hoping it will do a miracle for me one more time.
Sorry for the long post. There is much more that I want to say.
Thanks for reading it.

Irina - I am so glad to see you back, I was wondering about you! Your post really sums up what I am so so afraid of. You worked so hard and were such an example of turning Medi into a way of life, and now you are struggling. Thank you for sharing this struggle with all of us, we are here to give you any and all the strength we can....and learn with you as you go through this.

Wondering about some of the others....Linds? Leah?

I need some good "snack" ideas....I am constantly short on my 1200-1400 calories and hate trying to think of something to eat.....because when I do, I find myself standing in the kitchen staring at food. And that WILL lead to bad choices! And in 2 weeks they think I'll be up to 1800 calories.....I could easily do that if I threw in a candy bar, but that's not OK!!!

Thanks, Keri, I think our honest posts will help us and others - just knowing that you are not alone in this struggle and that you will never be "out of woods" so to speak.

By the way, I have the same feeling if I start thinking about what I want to eat - I make bad choices. I do much better when I have my "snacks" ready to be grabbed. I do a couple of oopsies with PB2, GG crackers (they are 12 cal and all fiber) with Laughing cow or Walden Farms caramel dip, coconut flour minimuffins (I posted recipe on the desert thread) with some other Walden Farm dips, "Charlene's pudding" (this is how I called them - FF cottage cheese, FF ricotta, vanilla, unsweetend cocoa, almond milk, splenda blended and stored in the fridge), ThinkThin bites (100 cal), protein shakes with various flavorings, almonds, PB2 balls.

Irina - Welcome back! Please...tell us about the GG crackers, are they store bought? Details! I am having a hard time staying away from Triscuits right now, I want a cracker but I want a "fiber" cracker that won't add a lot of calories! Do tell!! Hmm...and Walden Farms caramel dip...I haven't seen that. Do you like it. Can it really pass as caramel? I'm going to look for your coconut flour minimuffins...I've got coconut flour in the refrigerator. I don't have a minimuffin pan though....

Your snacks make me want to plan ahead!! Do you make things up on the weekends and then eat on them throughout the week?

Debbie, I buy these crackers in the special diet store where I buy the rest of diet stuff. But they sell them also on netriorion side - search for GG Scandinavian. But be warned, they are aquired taste (at first, I did not like them, but now I do, you need to drink fluids with them as they are all fiber) Caramel dip tastes really good - unfortunately my store does not have it - I got a bunch of them in Dallas when I was there on business. I usually make oopsies and muffins on a weekend and this way I have them when I need them. By the way, I also like reduced fat flax seed muffins recipe - I use them as snack or breakfast (got the recipe from the breakfast thread) - I double the recipe, top them with blueberries, bake them for 45 min in muffin tin and keep them in the firdgel. When I am ready to eat them, I cut them in half and toast them. They are little high in calories (90 each) but lots of fiber.

Maintenance IS a struggle...some days are good, others are better, and some are just totally awful. Because I live alone, I control what foods I buy and what is in my cupboards. Still in all, I went a bit astray during the holidays, not far, just a bit. Not what I planned but now I am paying the price by shaking off the weight. Not bad, but enough to make me aware, yet again, that there is indeed a price to be paid for venturing too far off track. Again, I remind myself that there are just some foods that I am not meant to consume without a price. And it is up to me to determine whether I want to pay that price or not. And it is not a case of major food denial, rather a case of wise choices. There are choices I could have made instead of what I chose...but I didn't. I chose and I am paying the price. Simple as that.

Working a wierd schedule does not help either. Currently 415p-1245a with Friday Saturday off. Days off are fine. Problems occur when I get home. I have finally learned that water or a cup of tea is the answer to eating at that hour. Tea works the best, and I have to boil the water and make it. The act of actually making something is what I apparently miss when I get home. Most people make dinner when they get home...but not at THAT hour! So tea works well.

Living in AZ makes outdoor exercise do-able 99% of the time. Thank goodness!

Hang in there everyone...we CAN do this!

Jo

Irina,
I thank you SO much for the snack and breakfast ideas! I know that eating fiber is what going to satisfy my wanting to feel full, and yet I like something sweet too, so the caramel dip and the blueberries will take care of my sweet urge when mixed with the fiber you mentioned. THANKS!!

Hi everyone,

It has been a while so I thought I'd check in.

It sounds like some of you are struggling a bit. You are not alone. I agree with Jo, maintenance is a struggle. I also went up a few pounds over the holidays. Here is what I recommend during those difficult times...

1) Start journaling again if you have stopped.

2) Try to do week 1, only with 1000-1200 calories. This will help you lose the unwanted weight, but more importantly get your eating back under control and get rid of the cravings.

3) Drink 64-128 ounces of noncaloric, decaf fluids per day.

I came up with the following suggestions for week 1 to help patients at our clinic...

Additional Week 1 Food Ideas
Shrimp cocktail (8-10 shrimp = 100 cal, cocktail sauce = Heinz 1c ketchup + horseradish)
Pancakes* or **French Toast
Corn Dogs (*pancakes with Applegate uncured turkey hot dogs, 40 cal, 0 carbs per hot dog)
Deviled eggs (I use Eggland’s Best hard boiled eggs)
Reduced fat cheese sticks
100 calorie almond packs
Dannon Carb Smart yogurt
Sugar free gelatin
Beef Jerky (read labels for carbs)
Celery with Light Laughing Cow Cheese
Hormel Turkey Pepperoni (17 slices for 70 calories)
Hormel Turkey Pepperoni microwave for 60 seconds with light Laughing Cow Cheese
Deli lunchmeats rolled with cheese slice
Dill pickles
Crustless Pizza or Quesadillas***

*Pancakes

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

8 large eggs
A pinch of cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon xanthan or guar gum (opt. for thicker pancakes…can be found with Red Mill specialty flours)
18 packets of Splenda or Truvia
vanilla extract to taste
8 oz of fat free cream cheese - not softened

Separate the eggs into whites and yolks into separate bowls. Add a pinch of cream of tartar and xanthan gum to the whites and whip with mixer until stiff. In yolk bowl add cream cheese, vanilla, and sweetner. Blend with mixer until blended. Using a spatula, gently fold mixture into egg whites, being careful not to break down the whites. Spoon the mixture onto a large jelly pan (mine is 13" by 18")
Bake 25-30 minutes until the bread is golden brown. Let cool, then cut into 16 rectangles. Store in freezer bags in the freezer. Thaw at room temperature outside the bag when ready for use.

Per rectangle / 50 calories/ 2g fat/ 1g carb/ 0g fiber/ 5.5 g protein

**French Toast

Dip *pancakes in eggbeaters (and optionally add vanilla and cinnamon) and fry in teflon pan until golden brown on each side.

***Crustless Pizza or Quesadillas

Melt ˝ cup Sargentos reduced fat mozzarella shredded cheese in Teflon omelet sized pan over medium high heat until cheese melts and edges start to brown. Take off heat and let to set for about 3 minutes until cheese sets up. For pizza add 1 T tomato sauce and turkey pepperoni or turkey sausage and fold for a calzone style pizza. For quesadilla add a small amount of salsa, sour cream, and chicken strips and fold over.

This “cheese wrap” can also be used for tacos, scrambled eggs, … whatever you would like. Also experiment with different types of reduced fat cheeses, i.e. 3 cheese Mexican cheese for the quesadilla or 4 cheese Italian cheese for the pizza.

~200 calories, limit to twice a week

Go back to your clinic for help, that's what they are there for. Whatever you do, don't ever stop trying!
