I traveled to Indiana with my wife and son to see my grandfather who is ill. Once we arrived at the airport my wife became sick and then began having contractions (she was only 20 weeks along.) We ended up at a hospital hours away from anyone we knew in a city that is foreign to us. The Dr's were great and were able to control the contractions and my wife and the baby are well now. My two year old son and I spent those two days visiting her in the hospital and juggling hotels. Bad eating choices started at this point.

After a couple days my wife was released and we were able to get to my grandfathers house and see him. He isn't doing well and we helped my grandmother take care of him. During this time I found I was beginning to fall back into my old food habits.

I then injured my knee while running and now have a strained IT band, which causes extreme pain while going down stairs or while running. So my primary mode of exercise is now difficult as well.

Hoping my weigh in won't be too tragic this evening, and I am hoping they can help me get myself under control.
Jeffrey, as they say, life happens. You made some not so good choices and you are now in trying times, but you recognized it, you are going to the clinic. Even if you gained some, you know why, go on week1 for a few days and you will be back on track. Good luck!

I'm just so amazed and overwhelming THANKFUL to be at goal. The first week we visited our daughter in Ohio she commented that she doesn't remember me looking this "small" before. This is my otherwise "usual" adult weight that I could pretty well maintain...she last saw me this size about 15 years ago! So, she was about 10 and doesn't remember that.

I looked at my MWL record:
These are the changes!
Loss of 10 “ from waist - 40” waist to 30” waist now
9.0 point loss on BMI scale-- 32.6 BMI to 23.6 now
52.4 lbs lost - 190.0 to 137.4 lbs now (40 lbs were fat)

I've just been taking one AS for weeks, sometimes even just 1/2 of one.
Need to get in more water. I have chapped lips today! Yes, it's windy outside too, but I know I'm dehydrated.

Hope you all have a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend!
Blessings,
Debbie

Great job Debbie!! 10 inches off the waist is incredible! I'm with you, I am so happy to have made it. Your post prompted me to look at my results in greater detail. Figured I'd share too.
Starting waist 29" now 26"
(Non-medi stats) Hips were 37" now 34", bust (sigh) was 36A almost B, very recently had to buy a 32A. That's been a life long issue though. Butt (i count it seperately from the hips because it's kinda bubbly) was 40" inches and is now 38.5"...not as big an improvement as I'd like but better than nothing. Upper thighs were 24" and are now 22".
Total weight loss: 22lbs, originally 154.5, now 132.5. 18 of these pounds were fat!! I'm 5'6", so technically I was at the highest "normal" BMI when I started and now I'm in the middle. I was wearing 10's when I started but my 10's were getting skin tight and I was unwilling to buy a bigger size which is what brought me to Medi. I am in a 6 (loose) right now and would really like to achieve fitting into a 4 during maintenance. I believe I have mentioned this before but I was an overweight teenager (215lbs) and lost that weight around age 17 in an unhealthy manner and maintained in the 130-145 range for years. Had a child, went up to 189 while I was pregnant and got back down to 142 by the time my son was 5-6 months. I loved exercise which allowed me to be a little more free with my eating (again, not so healthy manner) when I was younger (not that I am old now, I'll be 29 next week) but I would make good choices. About 2 years ago, my job became extremely stressful and my life got busier. I was working constantly and stressed out. Slowly, my workouts started getting cancelled until there was NO workouts. I was eating out more often and making spontaneous decisions about what to eat...lots of lunches and dinners at Mexican and Chinese joints. Before I knew it, I was buying size 10's instead of 8's and making excuses that I was holding water or something else dumb. I saw a picture of myself with my son that was taken in May of this year and I was shocked. I had "muffin top" and found myself asking(blaming) my husband if I REALLY LOOKED LIKE THAT? You know how husbands are. Between that and the tight size 10's...it was time to get back into gear. Medi has really taught me a lot about how my body works and making better decisions in order to lose or maintain weight. I'm glad to be a part of this "group" of people who are aware how awesome this plan is.

Charlene, I must of missed any previous post about your history. I had no idea about your non-lean teen years, and that helps me understand why someone only needing to lose 20 to 25 lbs would join Medi. Of course, if it had been around when that's ALL I had to lose I would have joined then too! Wow! Congratulations to you for your growth in healthy ways! DD is coming shortly and we are off to watch Casting Crowns in concert. I LOVE their music!! Talk to you later

I made it into the Transition phase although I am still hoping to lose another 6lbs. I am currently at 800 calories, at least until next Friday. I was 131 this morning and would love to be 129 by next Friday. I haven't yet read all these posts but I am planning on doing that after my kids are in bed tonight. I am sure I will learn a lot.

I returned from Boston and discovered I lost three pounds. But we have a new scale and I'm a little leery. I go back to MWL for my monthly next week and will be able to compare. But my husband compared the two scales and he said they were the same.

On top of that, I needed a new pair of jeans as the size 10 jeans I bought shortly before going in maintenance were too loose. I couldn't believe it. So I tried on 8s. They fit. I figure I better try 6. They fit! So I no have two size 6 jeans... something I've never owned in my life. Maybe when I was 5 years old?

I've been in maintenance as long as I was on the diet. Every day is a battle. I make good choices -- it's just sometimes I eat too many servings of a low carb bag of crackers or something healthy. So I'm avoiding buying bags or at least, not have more than one open. (We have lots of chips for the kids that are open, and I don't touch them.)

Congratulations txntv! Isn't it fun to get clothes now and they fit so much easier that we're not having to hide a muffin top!? Just in the past 10 days I've been in size 8 jeans and even tried on a pair of size 6 capris and shorts that I'll keep and fit better in by Spring. I am learning for you and others in maintenance, and can appreciate your statement: "Every day is a battle. I make good choices -- it's just sometimes I eat too many servings of a low carb bag of crackers or something healthy." This has been me lately, and yet somehow I'm still in trace ketosis in the AM, MWL doc thinks due to the exercise I've been doing. I know better than to play with fire! Working out an allergy situation today that occured last pm.

That's great that you were gone to Boston and still lost 3 lbs! Congratulations! I am glad you're still checking in here - stay with us!

Actually, I have a slight muffin top -- but it's not tightness at all. I'd have to have baggy pants or Spanxx to have no muffin top. It's loose skin from three big babies -- which is why it took a while for me to feel thin. For goodness sakes, I still have the same size underwear from before MWL and I still have muffin top even though it's baggy. Nuts, eh?

I work out daily. Oh, sure I had a day here and there when I didn't like yesterday because I was with family all day for the holidays and had to drive an hour out of town and back.

Thank you for great support. You're an inspiration, Debbie.

txntv - Honestly, I've lost nearly 54 lbs and still wear the same panties as pre-MWL. I don't know how! I'm just very short waisted but have a long pelvis so they still fit and I haven't bother to replace them. My waist no longer looks like an overinflated tractor tire! Ha! Now I have shirts tucked in and even can wear a belt! (Granted, I am also about 3 years post bil mastectomies/abd reconstruction for replacement of breast tissue so that's why I don't have as much flabby abd skin as you'd expect....I truly HAD to emergently lose weight because I was suffocating myself with how tight my abdominal fat was within the surgical mesh of my abdominal muscles! I'd gained an extra 13 lbs after my mastectomies and reached the limit of the easement!)

And I definitely support you!

Congrats to you, Linda, for reaching goal! Jeff, I'm so glad your baby and wife are ok!!! Hope everything is well and you are back on track now.

I've been MIA for a bit. We vacationed to see my Dad and I gained a couple pounds. No big deal - I always do from drinking too much wine and eating too much cheese! But then I went into a scheduled surgery on my nose and OH my word - the recovery has been so very difficult. My entire face and mouth have been bruised and swollen. I think I would've rather kept my breathing problems after all of this. I'm finally able to eat something without a straw but I've lost TEN pounds in a week and I'm trying to gain now. I know without a doubt now that I have no business being "thinner" because I look horrid. So basically, my husband is in charge of grocery shopping and all we basically have in the house is full fat cheese, bread, ice cream, and cream of potato soup. ? I have no doubt it will take me all of a day and a half of eating this stuff (once I can) to get back to normal but talk about messing with your head. Never in my life have I been in the situation where I am TOO thin. Wild!

Hope all is well with you. Touch base soon!

I hope you're feeling better now and on the mend. I am sorry it took such a drastic event to make you realize there's such a thing as too thin -- but it's good you know this now and won't have to make yourself nuts trying to get thinner.

Even though I still keep track of what I eat, workout daily and maintain my nutrition values -- I still hate getting on the scale. Slight changes bother me even though it's often water weight or muscles.

Erin! I've missed you so much!! I'm sorry you're uncomfortable, and glad to know that you are on the mend. I agree with txntv's post...and now reality has presented itself about what it would be like to be a few lbs thinner. Healthy, that's the goal! I hope you're able to eat comfortably soon, my friend. Hugs!

Hey Debbiie
Just got my biopsy results from the second excision and everything else is negative so they have removed all of the abnormal cells. Quite a relief I must say.

You are all such wonderful supportive people!!

Finally loaded some before and after photos on "official" thread here for MWL. I'm not very quick with all this--it's taken me about 5 hours! (Part of it is installing CDs, as I don't have a digital camera, yet!) Sorry some photos are sideways...etc. Don't know how to fix that. Any suggestions? The last photos were taken at about 145 lbs. Got down to 136.4 and now up to 140. Gotta get this back off! Goal is 137 lbs...adding in carbs is tricky, especially with my allergies and I've been a little impatient/rebellious. Eating carbs again makes me hungrier! Still learning this new way of maintaining!

I think it makes me hungrier to eat carbs too...actually, I'm quite sure of it. Sounds like our situation is the same as far as weight goes....I was 132.5/133 and the other day when I weighed myself I was 135. My home scale showed that my fat was down 1 percent though...and it runs pretty in-line with what the scales at Medi normally say. I want to do protein for a few days and see if that helps. At least it's only a couple pounds for us though. I might have already posted this somewhere but I had a friend who did South Beach and once she started adding back carbs she picked a few pounds up and then they kinda went away after the next couple weeks. I keep hoping that will be my case but I don't think I'm that lucky. My couple extra pounds are showing as "puffy" weight....if that makes sense. It's like, I was more lean and muscular looking at 133 and now I look a little softer in the thighs especially. I DON'T WANT TO LOOK SOFT!

Charlene - I know exactly what you mean about looking puffier. That's a good description of what I'm seeing too in me...mainly in the arms and abd. I know that part of it is because as I eat more I'm less thirsty and I'm not drinking all my water.
I miss our other friends too! I miss Lea and Erin....It's just mainly you and I on the Energy In/Energy Out thread nowadays!

I notice it in the tummy and arms too...it's pretty much all over. I am definitely drinking enough water....actually, probably better about my water consumption now than in acute because I am paranoid about not getting enough. Sigh...I know there's a good deal of muscle under there and I WANT TO SEE IT. I miss everyone else too!! We need the advice of other people who were a little ahead of us.

Hi to all...Though you don't often hear from me, I'm still out here! Next week I start Wellness. As I've moved through maintenance, I have found (as quite a few of you have) that some carbs have an huge, huge impact on me. I've come to believe, like Susie, that I must be very careful with my daily carb intake. It takes very little for the cravings to come back and for me to get out of control. I had a 'binge' type lesson last week...something that I haven't experienced in over a year. I told myself I'd just eat 'half' a burger with bread and a 'few' fries. Within a day, I was overwhelmed with my need to eat more and more. It is a very physical feeling to me - a hunger that I can NOT satisfy, and I'd forgotten how brutal it is.

I went back to eating 'week 2' foods, and I think that's the best way for me. A couple of questions - for those of you who do abstain from most carbs even in Wellness - do you replace the recommended daily carbs with protein or with more good carbs (medi-approved veggies & fruit) to ensure enough daily calories and nutrition? What seem to work best for you personally?

Have you ever had anyone suggesting that a high protein lifestyle will cause kidney disease? I had a Doctor through that out at me the other day. (It's like you can't win sometimes!!! I lose all the excess weight, and the Dr. still finds a reason to fuss at me!)

Thanks to all!

Ann

Hi Nick, Jo, Debbie, Lins, Annie and everyone else in maintenance land,

I haven't been on in a while. Nick, glad to hear that everything came out negative.

I agree with Jo that it is all trial and error. In many ways maintenance is much harder than acute. I have a constant 5 pound fluctuation that I am always fighting. Yesterday I finally got frustrated with it and decided to do week 1 this week. Yesterday I ate 880 cals (which is about the least I can do without AS) and 8 carbs. I was up 4 pounds this mornin! I know in my head that it has to be water, but it sure was tough to see on the scale. I should probably stay off of the scale until I finish the week.

In general I stay completely away from carbs other than vegetables, with the exception of once a week my husband and I split a steak and eggs meal that comes with a bagel and steak fries. The once a week splurge makes me feel like those foods are not forbidden to me, it gives me something to look forward to, and is not enough to make me crave carbs again. I am careful the rest of the day.

This works for me and my husband, but may not be for everyone.

I hope you are all doing well. I miss you all.

I am right there with you, Susie. I absolutely have to stay low carb, or at least as low as humanly possible, and safely as possible, without damaging liver and kidneys and keeping the protein to the lean proteins. I have sworn off red meats..actually did that years ago. I, too, run at about 800-880 and can go higher, but I usually will pay the price. At which point, I really cut back, change up the exercise and push as close to week one as possible without the AS. I still push the water upwards of 140 oz a day, with all the walking I do, in the AZ heat, I really have to!

But I can shift 5-7 pounds...which is totally frustrating at times, and then I HAVE to stay away from the scales. My schedule changes every month but mostly I am working afternoons such as 1p-930p so I can walk in the am...getting in my miles BEFORE work, and still walk on my lunch break for about 15 more aerobic minutes.

Someday, maybe this will be like child's play, but not yet. I fought so hard to lose the weight, I will fight just as hard to keep it off. Do not get me wrong. I do NOT feel deprived or missing foods. I just do my level best to choose wisely when I grocery shop, and make sure my "go to work" lunch is ready to go every day. I eat out on occasion and make good choices there as well. But I am not at the point where I can just "phone it in".

Working in the travel industry, there is food EVERYWHERE, and totally unhealthy choices in the vending machines. The little cafe has food choices, but they are not ones I would willingly make. Plus there is the popcorn out every day, and the sweets. Good lord, I am surprised everyone does not weigh 1000 pounds. Several of us walk on breaks and lunches...eating lunch as we walk to get in as many minutes as possible. I prepare every night for the next day. Each week, I get my little snack packs and turkey packs/cheese slices packaged so I can just grab and go in the morning.

Okay, enough for now. Suffice it to say, it is all SOOOOOO worth it!

Jo

Hi Susie!
I'm so glad to hear from you. I know you're busy nowadays, esp with MWL! I had not considered just completely living without fruit. It's what helped me be successful in acute...I only ate fruit very infrequently and then it was usually strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, craisins every once in a while. And now I'm eating banana, eating breads, etc and feel puffy! At home today my wt was 140.4 lbs, and I meet with the clinic doc and Jerry Biggars day after tomorrow! This eating feels "empty"....it's like I'm eating the basic protein but with too many carbs it just makes me feel desparately hungry. I'm so much more in control than I feel!

I really need to start posting over here, but I still can't get my head wrapped around the idea that I am in transition. I haven't been doing so well the past few days. I am eating the right foods, I think my portion control is out of whack. I weighted this morning (haven't in a few days because TOM was here), and I am up 2lbs. So I think I am going to go back to acute style eating for a few days and see if that helps. I am at 800 calories right now.

I also haven't been able to run since Sunday because our schedule has been really busy, so that doesn't help. I am going to at least try and get a walk in today since I know I can't go run. I need to do something. But it's really hard when I ALWAYS have one of my kids with me, and my hubby has been having late night meetings so he hasn't been able to watch them for me. Juggling, mommy duties, wife duties, errands ect.... gets hard sometimes.
