Hello

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Medi. Actually I haven't gone yet. I go in a little bit for my first visit and to get all my paperwork in, tests, etc. I have followed atkins before (years ago) and had success, but have been slowly gaining weight over the past 10 years. Now I need to lose probably 50 pounds or so. I'm 39 and a little active - not a complete couch potato, but I don't exercise like I should either. I feel like I am mentally ready to do this. It's time, and I'm tired of being self conscious about my weight. I remember having so much energy "way back when" and I'd like to get back there again.

I'm not a big meal planner. I eat out a lot. My daughter is a picky eater, so I usually cook for her and then grab something quick for myself - or we go out to eat.

For the first week, since we are only allowed protein, is it ok if I buy low fat cold cuts, like boar's head or another premium brand, and basically just eat that? Also, someone mentioned Walden Farms sugar free sauces - am I allowed that in the beginning? I could grill a chicken breast or a pork chop - that wouldn't be a problem - but, for me, convenience is the key!

I understand you lose fairly quick on this diet if you stick to it (my mom works at the clinic and she and my dad lost a lot fairly quick). Is it hard to stick to? Honestly? I'm a little nervous. It's like getting ready to run a race and really wanting to win, but not sure if you can or not. Do you know what I mean? Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Be careful with anything that is low fat...They usually put alot of sugar in them. Really be focusing on High Protein Low Sugar. Boars Head Meat is great you can go with the Oven Gold Turkey, or Ham is also great. Get creative on your foods that are Medi friendly. It makes it a whole lot easier. Good Luck

It's a good starting off point. Not a sustainable diet for the long haul IMHO. It's a combination of VLC and portion control. It's manageable in the first few weeks as they give you appetite suppressants.

Weigh in results today

So me and my wife went in today. She is doing so great. I will let her posts her results. My results for weigh in #6 is 4 lbs down, but 5 lbs loss of FAT. For anybody out there that is having a tough time if you want to lose it you will. This is the best plan out there. My total fat loss so far is 37 lbs and I have increased my Fat Free Mass 10 lbs. I believe the increase in FFM and exercise is really needed to get the results people expect when doing this plan. Time to update the signature.

Since you just started, go in knowing that the first 3 to 4 days are the toughest. When you get past that part for example, Tired, Headaches etc then you will be fine. Think of this program as how foods affect your body. I actually find it to be very informative and a much better way of eating. Good Luck on your journey. I guarantee that if you stick with it and follow the plan you will be so happy that you did. You have alot of support here and I love that even members that are on the maintence phase still post and help us out. Thank you everyone.

McBoo - Thanks for the tip. I will seek out that kind of relish. I like your tips! When I saw your post on the Miracle Noodles for Pad Thai, I was ecstatic because that is one of my Husband's favorite dishes and we were eating it often. Still looking for that sugar-free garlic chilli paste but have found the sugar free coconut oil and the Walden farms peanut spread. That's how we discovered all the other goodies out there that Walden Farms makes. At Sprout's supermarkets, they are also 15% off right now. The Miracle Noodles are on their way, got half the order already.

Mchestnut - I totally agree with you, the Medi plan is the best out there and really changes how you look at food, in a good way.

Nikki, sorry to hear about your foot pain. I have struggled with plantar faciiatis and heel spurs on and off for many years now in both feet. Apparantly, I have a flat foot with a high arch. The orthotics I have with my current Podiatrist are the best I have ever had. He has a machine that records your foots' pressure as you step over a computerized rubber mat which then translates to your orthotics being fitted to support your foot in the manner you are walking with the proper arch support. I am once again able to walk on the beach which was a problem for me for many years. My Parents have a condo on Clearwater Island so I go there a few times a year and not being able to walk on the beach was very depressing. My Parents actually walk from the Island - to the beach - and then up to Caladesi Island and back! I have done that in the past, so when I am able to do that again, will be a time for some serious celebration!!!

RahRahRhi and JustSherry! I started Medi three weeks ago. I DID NOT know what the diet entailed at all, which was a blessing for sure! I was in Florida for three weeks at Thanksgiving and met a woman who lost a lot of weight on the plan and recommended it. So when I got home, I looked them up, called, got the first available appt, and voila... Needless to say, I was overwhelmed the first morning of the diet! I am very thankful Medi is here in the DFW area as it is only a few years old and originated in Tampa.

Krissy, I am eating today...

B- Fasted for Blood Work (appetite pill and lots of water)
L - Leftovers - 4oz BBQ Chicken breast & 3/4 cup coleslaw
D - Steak and garlic/almond green beans
S - black cherry sugar free jello cup

Rhonda - How did your weigh-in go today?

Lost 1.5lbs more according to my scale! My weigh-in is tomorrow morning so it is exciting to see what the tanita scale clocks me in at. YEAH!!!

Krissy,
I would have to agree to disagree on this point. First of all I don't look at it as a diet but rather a lifestyle change. Once you get through the first few weeks it becomes second nature (at least to me) and causes you to make wiser choices in your food selections. Once you reach maintainance you gradually add back in more carbs and fats. The big thing the plan teaches you is portion control and how to make better choices. In the maintainance phase the plan works with the glycemic index/load. You learn how your own body handles different foods and you make your corrections accordingly.

Maintainance has been quite easy for me so far and the variety of additional foods that I have added really makes it interesting.

Not once have I deviated from the plan. I think that makes a big difference in seeing results and keeping the motivation up. When people start to deviate the results start to not go the way they want and frustration sets in. When that happens it generally becomes a recipe for failure.

Of course this is only my opinion from my own experience with the medi plan.

Good luck to all; however you decide to persue a healthy lifestyle.

For those of you in the Tampa area, one of my goals for this year is to run the Turkey Trot held in Clearwater on Thanksgiving morning. My Mom runs it every year and I would love to join her!

Mamamia,

I use sugar-free coconut syrup not coconut oil. The syrup adds the sweetness to the recipe. If you use coconut oil use it sparingly for when you add your fat but I don't think it has the sweetness.

For the relish do you have a Sweetbay, Hannaford or Kash N Karry supermarket near you? They have a store brand that is sugar free.

The garlic chilli paste you can usually get at any Asian market. Most large supermarkets have the Dynasty Brand Garlic Chilli Paste in the asian section.

Good luck. Start your training as soon as possible so you can take it slow and build up. That is a great goal to have.

Welcome New Members!

Welcome JustSherry and Rahrahrhi! I am so excited because rahrahrhi is my daughter and we live 7 hours apart and she joined MEDI yesterday! whoohooo! I started the day after Thanksgiving and my husband started a week later - so we have the entire family on MEDI, but miles apart.

Thank you all for encouraging the new members - it is so great that you all encourage everyone! I encourage my daughter, but it is different coming from you guys versus her hearing it from MOM!

Thrilled that she made the best decision for her life and focusing on HER and her health.

Thanks everyone!

I just tried a new crispy snack - they are called Gourmet Wafer Crisps by The Kitchen Table Bakers. They are handmade from pure parmesan cheese. I got the jalepeno flavor and the aged parmesan - they are delicious! 3 crackers have 80 calories, less than 1 gram of carbs, 7 grams of proteins, and 6 grams of fat (a little on the high side). If you crave something crunchy - this is it. Someone in my office told me that they had a recipe for them too. Ingredients are pasteurized part skim milk, cheese cultures, salt, and enzymes. I bought them off the netrition.com site. Will not eat them daily as they are a little on the expensive side, but wow, they are good!

Please keep cheering the newbies on - they need it. I can't tell you all how much i have read this site and depended on everyone for support. It rocks!

You go Anne

I love your attitude - you go, girl! I also love that you post your daily intake as it gives me ideas for my planned menu!

You are in Navarre - do you come to the Medi in Pensacola or is there one closer to you?

I go to the one in Pensacola...I don't even think there is another office within hundreds of miles....I assume you go to the Pensacola office, too?

Once you have lost all the weight and are on maintenance, you can have fruit and carbs again? I mean good carbs ... like sweet potatoes? Or will that always be a "no no"?

I already got my girlfriends to change our "GNO" date from pizza to sushi so I can make better/easier choices and am hoping to make the pad thai you all rave about next week!

I'll check for ketosis tomorrow but hoping for it by Friday...my breath doesn't stink yet so I know I'm not there

If you're new to the program...get addicted to this board. These people are real...and amazing...and they offer the best advice, and support!!
AnneMe,
You are doing great. You know you will be in ketosis in the next day or two. Laughing Cow cheese is one of my favorites. The garlic herb is just as good as the French Onion. Good luck on GNO. You will do fine.

Most definatly you can have fruit/starches and carbs. You learn to make the best choices. You can have certain fruits in the acute phase once you get to week three. I don't know what week you are in right now.

On maintainance I am eating cereal, brown rice, all different kinds of fruit whole grain breads just to name a few things. There is a lot of variety. You also learn how your body feels when you eat certain things. and yes you are permitted to have a sweet potato once you get to the maintainance phase.

Rhonda,

That is fantastic. When you start your exercise start out slow if you haven't been exercising for a while. You can gradually build up to where you need to be without hurting yourself.

Once again great job. Keep up the good work.

Yes, I do - love Dr. Mitchell! He spent alot of time with me and my husband last week. He really believes in the diet and he said that as an OB/GYN doctor for all those years delivering babies, that there was rarely a day that went by that he wasn't asked about losing weight or have a patient that was upset about her weight, so that got him interested in what to do to help people with their weight loss.

Hope that you have a wonderful week!

First week weigh in results,

My wife posted when we both started, a week ago. Her weigh in is tomorrow, mine was today. Week 1 weight loss was 9.7 lbs including 8.0bs of fat and 1.7 lbs of water. I have not deviated from the plan this week. Daily calorie content week 1 is 800 calories for me. We are going to the Southlake TX location. My body continues to be in a state of shock from this plan, each day gets a bit better. I would say that I am at 80% of feeling good right now, still lacking in energy - is this typical? When does feeling great begin?

That is very encouraging to know that you can eventually get back to "normal" eating. This system is supposed to "re-set" the damage that we've done to our bodies and the way we metablozie sugar and starch. If you're eating that stuff, and not gaining weight, it sounds like it really does work.

Awesome Job...Congrats. Now the hard part is over, in a couple of weeks it will be a habit and the weight just fall off. Since you are going to start working out, please do take Mcboo advice. Start out slow, 15 to 20 min to start and work your way up. Look forward to hearing your weekly results.
