WOE: Mindful eating
Start Date: August 31, 2011 third time around
Hey, Dave

I stopped monitoring my calorie intake and began "mindful eating". I have been able to lose a couple of pounds over the last few weeks...slowly, but surely. I am going to attempt maintaining for a few weeks and then let the carb level increase a bit and try your plan. I know already that I can get up to 60-80 carbs a day without much damage control. I have very good control with food now and hope that mind over matter will win!

On maintenance days, I never exceed 80 grams of carbs a day.
I have sorta gotten out of the daily weigh-in habit. I weigh myself 3 times a week or so.
Doing it every day got to be kinda stupid. My weight hasn't gone to extremes either way in the last 6 months or so, so I don't go nuts on the weigh-ins like I once did.

I am at the point in my WOE where I know what kind of eating day it is.

Interesting thread. My maintenance plan has been similar to Dave's and I've been doing it for 6 months. I allow myself 1-3 cheat days per week, never/rarely letting the scale go above a certain number. If I'm over that number in the a.m. it's a no-cheat day until I get it back down.

But honestly, for *me*, I'd rather I didn't do this. I would prefer I eat healthy at least most of the time and my cheat days are far from healthy. :/

I know it's gonna sound kinda sac-religious to write this in this forum of all places, but I don't buy ultra low carb as necessarily healthy. It's the most effective way to lose or control your weight, no doubt, but it isn't necessarily the healthiest way to live.

I agree with those health nuts who say a balanced diet and a lot of exercise is more healthy than just low carbing.

I just don't want to work that hard, so I supplement like crazy, low carb 4-5 days a week, eat what the hell I want the other 2-3 days ... and don't jog.

For anyone interested, weighed 204 Feb. 24. I haven't been as religious about my low-carb thing as I should be lately, but try to watch what I eat.

Frankly, I think de-junkifying my diet has kept my weight in range ... though 204 is in the high end.

That said, I miss my summer walks. This time of year sucks for lack of reasonable exercise. In the summer, I was doing 5-mile walks about 4-5 days a week.

IMO, my plan is the way to go where weight is concerned ... because it works. Again, it may or may not work for you ... but it works for me. Stay low carb 4 days a week, eat what you like the other 3 ... and if it's a bad week, just got 5 and 2.

Frankly, the only food I eliminate now is bread. I only eat bread once a week. Bread to me is like eating potato chips 5 days a week in the old days.

I also eliminate all unnatural sugars all week ... save for the occasional cheat.

Weighed 202.6 with the t-shirt on Sunday morning.

Time to update this one.
Went on vacation to Playa del Carmen, Mexico from March 16 to 23.
Weighted 202 lbs. on departure.
Naturally assumed because of some cheating (the bread was delicious at the buffets ... had some, didn't go nuts) and a little more beer than usual, that I'd gain weight.
But, for the most part, I stuck to the lifestyle and always substituted fresh fruit for pastries at dessert time.
I always walked a lot every day on the resort.

Was to tired to weigh myself on March 24 - sunburn, late arrival home, and I caught a damn cold from my friend who I went with.

Anyway, weighed myself today - 199.4 lbs.
Couldn't believe it.

I assumed I'd put on 3 or 4 pounds, but was always trying to make low carb choices at dinner.

Do you exercise? How many calories on a cheat day and a noncheat day or don't you count?

During the summer I walk a fair bit, but exercise ... not really.
Never count calories - ever.

4/5 days of nothing but good carbs, fewer than 80
2/3 where I eat pretty much what I want .... within reason. I don't go insane pigging out.

Just an update.

Still at 203.

Bought a new car a month ago. New cars make people incredibly lazy.
That would be me.

All that said, I have kept my weight in range with the current diet.

Getting ready for maintenance

I'm a few pounds from my goal weight, less then 10, and I need a plan to maintain while building lean muscle. Dave's plan sounds good, but would love an update.

What's NHE diet?

I have been maintaining for almost 2 years, and my 'plan' is basically the same as when I was in weight-loss mode. My experience as a small woman is that to maintain, I need to eat much as I did when I arrived at my goal weight.

In the process of weight loss, I changed both my attitude toward food and my behaviors.

I happen to be extremely sensitive to carbs, so I know I will always eat low carb. But I also need to watch my calories. Health is my primary objective, so I eat Primal with no grains and no dairy (except butter), wild-caught fish and grass-fed beef and bison. I avoid almost all processed food. This WOE has evolved during the course of my weight loss.

I know this is the right WOE for me because I feel great and my lab numbers at my regular medical check ups are always superb.

@malcah1 it's a carb cycling diet. Every third day and seventh day have 1 or 2 meals with carbs. Unlike the popular carb cycling diets that allows weekends off, he is against doing 2 days in a row. I find this work better, I don't get out of control and my weight is stable .....
For maintenance you add an extra day but always have 3 or 2 days lowcarb between carb days.or leave things as is.
I've not worked out for 3 weeks and I'm on vaca....I have no idea what the scale says..BUT I STAYED ON PLAN. I love this plan because although I need to stay low carb I know I need to have carbs and not do damage.
I've had other benefits also besides weightloss.....also less desire to have large quantity of carbs that I used to love

Why not just do the Carb Addicts Diet and eat a reward meal every day and the other two are low carb. That is what I do. I'm on the CAD thread.

I was on cad maintaining for years but never lost.My mom is still doing it and maintains. But I have other problems, i feel I need more lowcarb meals to lose weight and maintain. Cad principles I still use with NHE...I have 2 CAD days a week.....I've lost 2 pounds on vacation last week. I'd have to lower carbs on cad to lose weight which I think is not cad anymore.

I apologize for not updating for so long.
I am currently between 205 and 206 lbs. most days. Not uptight about being 205 or 206, frankly when I was below 200 I felt a bit off. At 202 or higher, I feel right and drinking doesn't hit me so hard.
I am not necessarily low carb, but I am absolutely low crappy carb.
Last year, I bought a Vitamix blender and have really incorporated superfood green smoothies into my diet. Green smoothies have carbs, but they're good carbs. I eat kale, spinach and carrots every day in a smoothie with an apple, pineapple, mixed berries and/or orange juice or water. I sometimes mix in my go-to seed mix of quinoa, chia and flax seeds.

I still cheat a couple times a week. If I wanna eat a McDonald's once a week or drink too much and want some chips or popcorn, so be it. Bread and potatoes are still no-nos every day, other than cheat days. I love bread and potatoes, but they're not healthy ... period.

My goal was to keep the weight off, and I have. But it does require some discipline.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I stopped the daily weigh-ins. I generally do them 2 or 3 times a week. If I feel like I'm losing discipline, I'll hit the scale. At the same time, there are times I feel like I should gain a pound or two and hit the scale. But, again, I can't stress this enough ... everyone is different. I hope my non-scientific method works for you, but if it doesn't ... don't get depressed. Everyone is different. Everyone's metabolism and genetics are different.

I apologize for just noticing this now, but I eat nuts 5 days a week, Al. Not a psychotic amount, but at least 3 or 4 small handfuls. Seriously, I have a big jar of mixed nuts at the office, I always make sure to have a few handfuls everyday for blood pressure and Omega 3 purposes.

I hope so, too! I'm trying to stay below 20 carbs for another five days, then start adding back, and it's not fun. I've been able to get comfortable at all the previous levels of restriction I've tried, but this... this is not fun.

If I still feel crappy tomorrow I may decide to go on and start OWL. I have had a real good five-month run here and don't need to be miserable over it.

One of my goals is to not be crazy over the whole diet thing and yes I know you know what I mean!

No worries ... I keep some nuts around but I always pour a small amount into a ramekin as that naturally limits the amount I eat.

Now the big issue is my normal issue of the hot humid Houston summer weather and beer. Nothing ... not even water ... quenches my thirst after doing mowing and weeding like beer. Fortunately even the light beers taste good in that scenario.

My weight has been all over the map this year. Got down to 180 again but then started P90 Boot Camp last Spring before I launch into P90X in September. It's really working wonders for my strength, stamina and flexibility but I can see myself bulking up a bit in the chest arms and legs. I don't mind it but it seems to have added about 5 pounds to me. My waist is the same though ... perhaps a little smaller.

If you're gaining strength, a few pounds and getting a smaller waist doing that, keep it up. Muscle weighs more than fat and burns fat.

I posted back on this thread a while back too. I'm maintaining as well. I was 147 on JUDDD/151 on strict LC. Been maintaining at 155/156 consistently since Jan on this type of plan. But I am not sure it is food related as I am taking night classes and can't exercise like I used to. So it could be stress/less exercise. Or it could be eating out more from school. I do cheat whenever I feel the urge, but like you I stay on plan most of the time. I just try to keep prepared LC meals and snacks around so I don't have to think about it

IMO, and again it's just my opinion, everything I've accomplished is simply diet related. If I stick to good carbs five or six days a week and have a cheat day where I don't care, it works in the end.

I eat carbs, but they're good carbs ... fruits, nuts, vegetables. On non-cheat days, never simple, crappy carbs.
