Somewhere in both of these books it does indicate that Atkins wanted you to get most of your carbs from veggies, in the form of salads and other low carb veggies, but I don't have time to dig thru either to find the quotes. I just remember it. I don't think anybody here at LCF would mislead you and certainly appear to be trying to help.

I'm following '72 and it does encourage vegetables, it simply limits them VERY strictly at the first level. At that level, you can ONLY have two small green salads, each less than one cup loosely packed and made only of leafy greens, celery, cucumbers and radishes. Period. When you move up a level you begin adding in 5 to 8 carbs only each level you step up. That can be 1/2 cup of the acceptable low carb list of veggies, or some other carb, such as additional cream, nuts or cheese for instance, but only 8 carbs or under. Next level, add 5 to 8 additional more carbs. The levels are generally a week, but you choose how long you want to stay at them. But breads, and grains, and such are off the list in the early stages of Atkins. She might be able to do Carb Addicts or South Beach but I'm sure they both start off pretty strict too.

I tried ordering a copy of Atkins '72 off of Amazon.com but the money was refunded - the seller had accidentally duplicated a sale

Every once in awhile another one shows up so keep looking if you really want a copy. That where I got mine. I'm glad I have the one I have but it is very disorganized, a bit contradictory or maybe just unclear and VERY poorly indexed - so it's impossible to find things you KNOW you read LOL... But then, it IS old! However, if like me your wife needs to be a purist, it's good to go back to the old school way. I had to really strip down to the beginning to "get it" and kick start my weight loss at my age.

Do you know for sure what she is eating when you aren't home? Something is wrong and either she's not telling you or maybe the bread, flax, waffles are the problem.

I know I can eat pure LC when my husband sees me and then closet eat chocolate when he goes to bed. Who am I kidding? Not even myself.

Something is missing in this equation.... Is the kitchen clear of all high carb stuff? Does she go out for lunch?

I got my used copy of Dr. A's '72 edition at a second hand store or you could also check Goodwill. What about a used book store where you trade books?

"Vegetables
You should eat 12-15 net carbs a day of vegetables. These salad vegetables are high in phytonutrients and provide a good source of fiber:

* alfalfa sprouts
* daikon
* mushrooms
* arugula
* endive
* parsley
* bok choy
* escarole
* peppers
* celery
* fennel
* radicchio
* chicory
* jicama
* radishes
* chives
* lettuce
* romaine lettuce
* cucumber
* māche
* sorrel

Other Vegetables
Within the 12-15 net carb daily vegetable requirement, these vegetables are slightly higher in carbohydrate content than the salad vegetables listed above, but they also provide important nutrients and add variety to your daily food intake:

* artichoke
* celery root
* pumpkin
* artichoke hearts
* rhubarb
* asparagus
* chard
* sauerkraut
* bamboo shoots
* collard greens
* scallions
* dandelion
* snow peas
* bean sprouts
* dandelion greens
* spaghetti squash
* beet greens
* eggplant
* spinach
* broccoli
* hearts of palm
* string or wax beans
* broccoli rabe
* kale
* summer squash
* Brussels sprouts
* kohlrabi
* tomato
* bean sprouts
* leeks
* turnips
* cabbage
* okra
* water chestnuts
* cauliflower
* onion
* zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach or tomato, cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count."

Veggies and Sugar Alcohols

I too have noticed a reacceleration of weight loss by adding veggies. One thing I found though, when eating throughout the day, I like to snack on beef jerky. It does have some carbs. I usually ended up at the end of the day close to 20 carbs based upon the slight levels of carbohydrates in some of my snacks and tomato juice.

Another hangup was eating sugar alcohols. I was not binging, but apparently I was eating enough the scale stopped moving over the course of 3 to 4 days.
Yesterday, I did not eat any sugar alcohols and most of my carb intake was that of vegetables. Scale finally swung in the direction I was after.

One other thing...I have been consuming small quantities of tomato juice (4 oz at a time, 12 oz per day). This has allowed good movement on the scale PLUS seems to act as a appetizer suppressor (at least for me). Anyone else consuming tomato juice? I would have never believed in it, but I read a post (somewhere, not sure where now) that suggested tomato juice as being pretty Atkins friendly. Besides, adding the veggies and tomato juice is an example of perhaps the most nutritious diet I have consumed for any length of time!

Oh well, bottom line is finding the combinations that work with your metabolism. I would try adding some of the recommended veggies and see what happens.
