sugar alcohols...

What is everyone's feelings about these? Have they caused you to stall in the past? Do/did you use them regularly?

My humble opinion is....that it is best to avoid them. The main reason is they fuel your tastes to keep wanting to eat sugar. The other reason is most of these sugar substitutes do spike your insulin levels in the same way sugar does, so you have defeated your purpose in eating them. Many people suffer with gastrointestinal issues from eating them also.

While I do try to avoid them in processed foods.... I will occasionally (read 1 or 2 times a year) use them for special occasion baking....

Like my thanksgiving Pecan Pie... actually Kevinpa's recipe... I totally look forward to that annual treat and I will probably eat almost the whole thing by myself over the course of the week - My SO will only have one slice - LOL

I rarely eat 1/2 of an atkins bar, more like a bite or 2. They had some samples at the gym so I tried a couple bites and I didnt like the taste. Probably because I eat organic,
the tastes dont agree with me!

I avoid SA--not only for the intestinal distress, but just like other sweet foods it kicks up my desire for more sweet foods, which I fear would lead me back to eating real sugar.

being a carboholic I can't endulge the sweet tooth cause i'm like that old lays potatochip nobody can eat just one.

However I have seen some folk posting with remarkable ability to just have one piece of candy or whatever to satisfy them and go forward from there with thier low carb plan.

So my answer about using them is you know yourself better then anybody here so if you have that kind of self control to just have 1 and be done caount those carbs and use them. Most folk don't know the human body manufactures sugar alcohols every day whether eating low carb high carb low fat high fat. If you aren't a 1 and done then don't let the tiger out of the cage and play with it.

happy low carbing

Thank you for all your replies.

I guess my question is, does anyone consume sa's in moderation and still notice stalls or gains?

I feel like my body may be metabolizing them rather than excreting them as some people's bodies do.
