Beating Myself Up! Fat that wont go away
Hi,
So Ive lost 75 lbs. Im at 134, and Im 5 ft 7. Im 52. I expect to have some flabbiness being that Im older and was very overweight. BUT I am beating myself up over the fat that I have around my middle! I look great in clothes, but when I look at myself with that OH SO CRITICAL EYE all I see is fat. So I guess my question is for those of you who have had kids, and have lost alot of weight- do you still have fat? ![]() Bella |

Victoria- I haven't had children...but it seems as I have gotten older that my stomach and waist line is the prime target of any fat on my body. It is the total LAST thing to go for me too. I know I am going to have to drop another ten pounds before I have a sleek trim looking tummy. It bumms me out too. Because I look great in my clothes also, but if I put on a swim suit, I look a little thicker in the middle.

Yes- I think the best thing for anyone planning on losing over 30 pounds would be to take it in stages. Drop 30 then maintain in for a month or two to let your body catch up-then go in again and drop some more repeat.... Or loose skin can be a problem.
I know that personally my original goal was to get to around 110 pounds, and at one point I was starting to see some loose skin and some stretch marks on my stomach so I stopped and have stayed in the 125-132 area here for about 3 months....and I have noticed that everything has seemed to have re-distrubuted somewhat and things are looking much better. So I am hopeful that if I lose more at this point it will be ok. That really wasn't my original intention...because I think people feel like they have to keep losing every week or they are a failure. But there definately is something to be said for intentionally slowing it down here and there. |

Bella, we women are way too hard on ourselves.
Be kind to yourself, love yourself and stop beating yourself up. You've done so well. Be proud of yourself and your body. If it helps any, a lot of us have distorted body images. But, we're all human and imperfect. After my two children even at 98 pounds, most people saw my stomach as flat. But, I had a small love handle that was squeezed in my jeans. I think we should try our best to embrace ourselves, imperfections and all. We're all special, unique individuals. We are not our weight!!!

We're all special, unique individuals. So well said Rebecca. We are just not perfect, nor will we ever be. Sure I have body fat and if I look at myself sideways in the mirror I am tsking, Then I can tsk at my wrinkly neck and my sagging arms. What will I get? Just frustration. I think we need to say to ourselves "JOB WELL DONE". |

Bella - I'm right there with you. I've lost 50 pounds, but I've had 3 kids and I'm menopausal (which contributes to belly fat) and I have a puffy belly too. I hate it, but I've been practicing trying to accept it, because without surgery I don't think it will ever go away.
I do think core work helps because it teaches you to hold it in all the time without thinking about it, and it does tone the ab muscles of course, but belly fat is so hard to get rid of! I work every day on trying to accept myself and be happy with how I look, but it's hard not to strive for that ideal body that we all have in our heads. My mother tells me to enjoy the body I have now because it isn't going to get better as I get older (thanks Mom ![]() )

Honey, I had it when I weighed 91 pounds just two years ago. Its the nature of the female body I do believe especially if we have been heavy at some point or had children. I'm sorry. Don't worry about it. Besides who sees you in your BD suit but you, DH, and the doctor? You have done great and at your height your weight sounds perfect.

I had a baby not 2 years ago and the midsection just will not budge. It is flabby and the fat feels funny...just really fatty and squishy. Fortunately, I recall that the result of that squishy ugliness is the most precious little boy in the world and I wouldn't change a thing.

Bella - you have done a wonderful job
Something that is so hard to remember is that no one is perfect and everyone has those bumps and bulges even at a healthy weight. The media is crazy and really how many of those photos are air brushed... Come on women have bumps and stuff it is just normal I have been wondering where that OLD looking skin is coming from I'm only 42 and the skin on the top of my thighs looks OLD. Yup 3 kids and I still have that pooch that I don't think will ever go away and we won't talk about the deflated water balloons (good thing for VS).You can only be the best YOU can be at whatever point you are in life. You are doing the right things eating right and excercising, you are treating your body right! We are at a point, at least I am not worrying about the bumps but focusing on being the healthiest and strongest I can be at my age. Heck I look better now than when I was in my 20's and feel good, strong and healthy. Be kind to yourself - you've come so far!!!! ![]()

Have you tried Pilates? It is amazing for toning your body - especially the mid-section! The best part is that it works no matter what level you are at. You use your own body weight as resistance so you don't get bulky. It is all about the core. Being constant and faithful to the workouts are the only requirement.
You can't necessarily help having a little around the middle, but strong muscles behind a little fat sure stop the jiggling! You feel strong and beautiful too. A lot of gyms have classes for free! Hope this helps. ![]() |
