New Maintainers - Wk of 11/7

Hello everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. We had great weather this past weekend but it is supposed to be much colder this week. I am off for an all day shopping trip with one of my sisters today. I am going to have to find some time on Sundays for exercise. My weight had been at 107.75 most of last week but today I am back up to 108.5. My eating has not varied over the weekend and I am drinking my water so it has to be the lack of exercise on Sundays that cause my weight gains on Monday. How is everyone else doing? Vickie

Hi Vickie!!

Hope you enjoy your shopping trip! Just think, shopping is exercise! Gotta love that!

Great weekend weather-wise here in central Florida. Days like these help me make it through those steamy days of summer that go on and on and on! I did my long run on Saturday, 6.2 miles in my best time to date....didn't really try for speed, but ended up feeling strong enough to go a bit faster than usual.

This morning's run was 4.2 miles in my fastest time ... this time I *did* try to go fast! Anyway, finished in 46:22, which is a little less than 11 minutes per mile. I'm hoping to eventually get to the 10 minute mile mark!! I finished strong and felt like I could have gone farther! Darn work .. cramps my style!

Finally over that nasty flu bug..........lasted a whole week last week and really dragged me down! Today I'm feeling great! Gained back those 4 pounds, but am holding my own at 100. That's what I like to see.

Hope you all have a terrific day!!

Betty

In preparation for the upcoming holidays I am going to go back to running 5 days a week plus my one day of tennis. I had cut back to running only 4 days a week, but I know over the holidays I will probably eat a little more (legally) just because will have more desserts, appetizers, etc. that we usually don't have on a regular basis. Have visitors arriving Thurs. that will stay for a week, then a week off and then have more visitors arriving for a week on Thanksgiving Day. Starting to feel like a hotel! I have warned them all ahead of time that I am LC and will be cooking LC, so don't have to worry about that, if they don't like, they can go out!

Hi Betty and Gina!
Betty, you are doing great with the running time. I am doing 1 mi of jogging and 2 miles of fast walk. Gina, the running definitely helps keep the weight off. Sounds like you are going to be busy with all that company. I did a lot of walking during my day of shopping. I did find some good buys on 3 dresses (I will wear one of them to the wedding in December I plan to attend). I also bought 2 pretty sweaters in the girls dept!! Vickie

HI, Hope everyone is doing well. Sounds like everyone is busy. I'm loving this fall weather; my favorite time of year. Its such a good time to get out and take a good brisk walk.

My DH is a realtor and works with a couple of large mortgage companies selling foreclosed homes. He just recently acquired a $3,000,000 house just a very few years old. Well, one of my good friends and I have been trying to clean some of these houses on the side (getting them ready for market) so this week we have been cleaning the big house. It is so fascinating to just be in the house; I'm not used to such luxury. Everthing in this house is top of the line and even includes an elevator. Anyway, it is somewhere just under 10,000 sq. ft. (8 bathrooms)and just wanted to say we have really gotten our exercise cleaning this house. It is has the most gorgeous master suite including a mirrored exercise room, heated marble floors (when needed), etc. You name it, this house has it. Some of you may be used to this type of luxury; not me. I guess someone built more than they could afford I just mentioned it because it has consumed my life and time this week and provided lots of opportunities to burn calories. I try to keep up with my exercise minutes and have not been sure how to acknowledge them. I decided if I work three hours after work cleaning I would claim one hour of time. I would think running up and down three flights of steps, vaccuming, moping, scrubbing down showers, etc. would have to count for something.

Everyone keep up the good Maintenance and lets be in that 5% success rate. We are approaching that time of year when people gain the most weight and it can be harder to maintain if we yield to temptation of all the goodies surrounding us during the holidays. What do most of you do when you attend parties, etc. and have no control over the food provided? It always seems to be a formal sit down dinner that causes the biggest problem for me. It can be awkward and quite frankly, I get embarassed to request a special menu or feel bad if I don't eat what is provided. I'm just hoping that doesn't happen this year. Any of you run into that?

Take care, Ann

Ann, that house sounds fantastic. You are getting a lot of good exercise with that cleaning. I have not attended any large parties but have been to several small events where I could usually find something to eat such as fruit or veggies. Whenever I go anywhere that requires that I take food, I bring low carb food. It is always a good idea to eat something (like protein) at home before going to a party where you have no control over what is served.
Jeannie, taebo is supposed to be good exercise. Just hang in there and get as much exercise as possible.
I will be working in my flower beds on Thursday. I need to finish cutting back the perennials and then mulch all the flower beds. I hope to get all of that done in one day.

I agree, the sit downs are the worst. If it is a big, stand up thing, I eat only what I want to eat (strictly LC), if it is a small, sit down dinner I pretty much eat what is served because I don't want to hurt the feelings of my hostess, although I may not eat ALL of it, like I only ate half of the dessert or half of the side dish.

I tried turnips tonight for the first time, I boiled them and then mashed them and added cream cheese. They were OK, but nothing exciting. I will try them again, roasting them in olive oil with spices and see if they are better that way.

I think I have injured a muscle in my leg again. I don't know if you remember, but a couple of months ago I strained a muscle in my calf, couldn't exercise at all for almost 2 weeks, and then had to slowly get back into the running. I am at odds what to do tonight, it is an exercise night, I guess I will run and see how it goes, tomorrow is a night off for it to rest. The last thing I want to happen is be injured around the holidays, all that food and not be able to run it off!

Gina, take care of yourself and don't overdo it. Those muscle strains take a long time to heal. I tried the turnips but didn't like them but it may have been the way I prepared them. Vickie

Gina I do hope you get to feeling better. It always seems that if one injures a muscle they are often hard to really heal and can be quite aggravating. I sprained my ankle several years ago and it continues to bother me from time to time. Its like I will always have a weak ankle

Its cool and rainy in good ole SC today and DH and I will be going to the beach for a couple of days. Hope it clears up. I love jogging on the beach and hope to get in a lot this weekend.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. Happy Maintaining!

P.S. akmd - Please continue to post. You are such an inspiration. I still would love to see some pictures. Your stats just continue to amaze me.

Thanks for the concern! (my DH is not always sympathetic about these things, nice to get some concern from somewhere!) I played a little tennis on it last night and it was OK, and did my regular workout this a.m., and it tingled a bit, but not worse than before.
I tried another new recipe tonight, zuchinni casserole, from Linda Sue's web site, I think. It turned out great, even though I think I overcooked it a bit. Even the baby liked it. I'm going to try at least one new recipe a week now, I was falling into a rut and don't want to do that.
And I have set another goal for myself: I want to have a flat, toned stomach by the time we go on our winter break at the end of Jan. (we go to an indoor water park to escape the dreary winter for a weekend), and so I have just ordered a copy of The Firm's 5-Day Abs tape, guaranteed results in just 10 workouts, or so it says. I will put it to the test! I remember JuliaL, who used to post here a lot, always saying the Firm is the best, and she certainly looks fantastic, so I decided I would give it a try.
Happy weekend!

Jeannie, if you get your turnips to turn out well, let me know exactly what you did!

I might have a woohoo today, got on the scale this a.m. as I do EVERY a.m. and it said 125!! I haven't seen 125 on the scale since I got my new scale a few months ago (turned out my old one had been off by 3-4lbs., and not in my favor!). Initially after that I was trying to get back to the 124 that I thought I had been but couldn't do better than 127 and I thought, well my clothes all fit great anyway, so why bother. As we all know, it is not the number on the scale (and I really tell myself that), it is how we feel about how we look. But psychologically this is good for me. If only it stays!

Doris--welcome! And the exercise bike is excellent exercise, I did it for awhile years ago and liked it, it's just that the good ones are a lot more expensive than a treadmill, or I might have gone that way. Cheers, and butt in anytime!

Hi Doris. Come in and post anytime! The exercise bike is a good exercise too.

Gina, congrats on getting to 125! You are right about the scale--I need to stop my weighing every day. I am still trying to get down to 105 but it is difficult. The thing is I know I don't need to do that. As long as I stay below 113, I feel fine.

I had a get-together with friends on Saturday and we each brought desserts. I made 3 types of lc/sf cookies. Well, after eating these cookies I feel yucky and am craving protein! So I think I am going to scale back on the lc/sf treats I planned to make for Thanksgiving. I never thought there would come a time when sweets didn't appeal to me!

I will put up a new thread on Monday. Vickie
