Big Rock Maintain Mountain, Friday

Hi gang,

I saw ANOTHER great show...that's 2 this week. It was called 9 PARTSOF DESIRE, a one-woman show written and performed by an extraordinary talent named Heather Raffo .
She portrayed 9 IRAQI women of diverse background: From a famous artist who was Saddam's mistress, to a teenager who is a a student at U. of Michigan, to a Parisian expatriate writer/drunk, to a mother running a museum in Baghdad where her 8 children were incinterated in an air raid shelter pierced by a "smart" incendiary bomb, and then to a Bedouin woman selling used shoes taken from the dead and several more. All the costuming changes were done with a single black sheet wrapped in different ways and marvellous postural changes!
Powerful stuff and her change of accent was incredible to behold. You could hardly understand the Bedouin but the teenager was pure Britney Spears!

Can someone tell me what SOUTHERN STYLE ribs are...they look like a cross between spare ribs and pork chops? Are they good? Can they be prepared like barbecued spare ribs? I'm seeing them on sale a lot lately ($.99 next week) but I'm gun-shy.

Quiet nothing today...been to the A&P. Just gym and TV to come. I bought some nice salmon filets and got the freebie lemon garlic marinade. Gonna have it with a butternut squash. We're eating a different squash almost every day...best thing about Fall!

Susun,
on the disaster in law <waving G'bye>

Linda,
Better give up on PA for beef...all they have is moo cows and when they finally drop dead from giving a zillion gallons of milk they're only fit for dog food (even the CATS turn up their noses)

Bye-eeee

Hi Roger,

LOL I guess we were posting at the same time. Here is what I put up. Too late to delete mine.

Magnificent vintage on Maintain Mountain Friday, Oct 29
So I'm the first one here again? Guess I'll get this started.

It's clouding up but still mild today, so I just may put the Christmas lights on the deck railing rather than wait for some cold, blustery Dec. day. I put them on a timer but won't plug that in until well after Thanksgiving.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, what's everyone doing and who has some good, low carb recipes to share?

Gotta get one more cup of coffee and get busy. Later gang..

Anyhoo, I haven't seen "southern style" ribs here but it sounds like they may be something like the "country style" ribs in our grocery stores....short, fat, pork chops?.. For that price, give them a try and let us know how they are.

No beef cows, eh? I'll still check around the northern part of PA. There are a few regular ol Beef farmers around. Some are Amish and one is the husband of our OT from work. Unfortunately they don't sell to the public.

Back to the deck rail.

Hi Big Rock! not bedrock eh????

Oppps, visions of Fred and Barney from the Flintstones. Still love the idea of sitting on the summit after the steady climb. WE did it!

Saw a nutritionist on a show earlier today talking about the dangers of eating Sugar.....Yeah! they are finally waking up.

You both started the thread at the same time. Great Minds think alike......huh? Linda and Roger WTG!

Dsis n law returns tonight on a late flight. DH has her out at a bar presently. They will come back for me to drive them to the airport. I am making supper for them soon. It is salmon and veggies fits in with my lifestyle! Yeah! I do have some rice or potatoes to offer her too! I think she has had a good visit, rest and change of venue. She is the dark haired one behind DD in the group Baptism Pic.

Roger,
Seems we are eating the same tonight, although I dont have squash in my assortment of veggies. Not sure if I have tried those Southern Ribs but I am game for anything. I am not a Southern Gal but a wanna be! Loretta and Ginny will probably know all those dishes.

Linda,
Good idea to get a head start on the outdoor Christmas decorating on a mild day like today. We had beautiful blue skies and sunny again, cant believe it this late on. Hope the snow doesnt stay till June, seems a lovely, long Fall season. DH blew and vacuumed the front yard this morning. The back will be another day far too many leaves for the pick up or composting.
Good Luck on the decision making re: your new vehicle.

Well, better start my steamin job! and make the supper.

Hugs to y'all that post later.

Just not feeling very well today. I think it is a new bp rx (altace) doc has me trying. My bp was 200/100 yesterday and it is more or less erratic lately.

The altace gave me a bad headache a few hours after I took it. Later on I felt nauseated. This afternoon late I broke out in a rash. I don't think I can take this drug. Any suggestions. I am still taking my atenolol. I will call the doc on Monday.

Will talk at you all tomorrow. Sorry

Loretta,

The Altace (ramapril) is an ACE inhibitor and it's CERTAIN to make you cough and COUGH and COUGH. Probably half the people that try it can;t take this class of drugs...I can't.
It also is not as strong as atenolol so that might account for the BP surge. Do you have any thiazides around to get that number down...those are crisis numbers...If not you can try doubling your atenolol for a day or two. (Don't try any trapeze work though )

Give a read, there's LOTS there on High Blood Pressure...first hand:
http://www.healthboards.com/boards/f...splay.php?f=61

I, too, am trying an experiment on my BP this week...more later when I have a ton more numbers.

Remember my moaning about the two blown Compact Flash camera cards from I-O Data...well, I screamed and hollered enough that they sent me two new ones...good, that's $50 saved.

Loretta, hope you get some answers on the meds SOON!! That seems scary to me - not knowing. I take Norvasc and haven't had any problems - ready to go off since we haveen monitoring my BP and it's going down!!

Linda, you gave me an idea on those Xmas lights!! I just turn them on also -- on the porch at night.

DON"T forget we change BACK this Sunday!!I should change all of my clocks now and see what happens.

Thanksgiving? I like sticking to the old favorites. Might do a pumpkin cheescake this year. Cranberries are my favorite ( with no sugar but sweetener). Must look up some recipes on that!

I really like getting into some activities that take my mind off food -- like football and shopping, xmas treees, a hike!!

Waving to all...... Barb

Hi Y'all

Geez, Loretta...so very sorry you are having such a hard time with new Rx...bad stuff, huh? Please be better soon...you being the nurse, I will offer nothing but for my "cure" input.

How did it go with your DH's thumb?

SuSUN, thanks for the great pics. With the relatives clearing out, you will feel FREE at last!

ZIP, you've broken the "crap play" spell...TWO good ones in a row now! Love ribs, no matter how they are prepared. We have been getting Acorns, 2 for a buck.

Montana, about the 400,000 miles...well...there are miles, and then there are miles. Sure that's a lot of natural wear and tear, but the driver "type" makes a lot of diff. A rowdy teen who's "given" a car can do more harm to a vehicle in 400 miles than a person who respects motors does in 400,000.
Bob believes in preventative maintenance, and keeps meticulous records...he knows exactly when he last packed each rig's wheel bearings, etc. Stingy tight pockets that he is, the rigs get top of the line parts. Wish he cared that much bout home maintenance and yard stuff....but it is nice to have dependable transportation.
LOL, mechanicking is one of his redeeming qualities I must remember when I want some house repair done, and get the blank stare from him.

Haven't given much thought to foods for the holidays, other than the GBrats requests of cheesecake. Their fave seems to be the basic BeachGirl's...that I add lemon, banana, and orange extract to, plus coconut and SF apricot jam; a kinda Hawaiian version.
Our local Cash 'n Carry store has the large 25.4 oz DaVincis for $3.49 (costs $6.49-7.99 at other grocers.) So I use a cup of it instead of Splenda in the cheesecake.

Barb, its so easy to do Cranberries...I just dump a pak of raw ones into a pot with a smidge of salt, and 1/2 C DaVinci...let 'em come to a boil and start popping...then either crush with an old fashioned 'tater masher, or electric swizzle wand. They are thick enough to serve this way, or can be thickened more with Xanthan.
Last year I made two: One with orange peel curls and zest, and the other with Salsa in it.

Hi to Ginny, hope your weekend is good!
And the same for you too, Jacki!

(dare I ask for y'all to send more sun???)

Be well and content.

Shawnee
