It's Sunday, May 23 for the Vintage Maintainers
Hi gang,
We didn't have a tornado touch down here, but I'm not sure about other areas. We just had some pretty severe thunder storms. Today it looks like more of the same. UGH!! Moms will be here for a cook out so it's going to be an easy day, paper plates and all. Gotta run but will check in between thunder storms. Have a good day my friends. Linda |

HI for starters.
I want to show the chiggers to SuSun so here is a web site for them. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IG085 I have serveral bites on my abd now. Had some on my t t s 2 weeks ago. They just like me. I use a hydorcortisone preparation for the itching relief. The bites sure last for a while though. Some of the priests are diabetic and so I just knew that the cheesecake would be ideal. I used one fat free cream cheese, and one full fat just incase they would worry about the fat. Went to a 50th Anniversary party last night and the menu consisted of Garlic Bread, Lasagna and some Italian Beans. They also served a salad. WHat a dilema because they ran out of salad. I ate some of the beans and the innerards of the lasagna. I sure was hungry by this morning. Linda that is my kind of deal using the paper plates and all. Enjoy your dinner with the moms. Hope the storms are over for you for a while. l8ter Have a content and quiet Sunday all. L retta |

Good morning Linda and Loretta, and then Hi to all who come later.
Good grief, sounds like bad weather!! I hate tornado's, and it does come with that humid weather. We just have to put up with some wind!! How come the paper plates? Even when I travel, I use real plates and silverware!! I know, I'm weird! I remember chiggers Loretta! It's rough when the party food is so carb laden!! Maybe you need to just bring some salad along. If I don't have enough protein though, I get hungry.Sounds like the golden bb is jumping again -- it just took one comment from someone to get people moving. It's been bothering me for awhile. I'm "suppose" to be working on records here in my office --- I better go and accomplish something!! ![]()

Hi gang,
Hanging on by my fingernails. Speaking of chiggers, has anyone had a sexual frenzy of cicadas (17 year) yet? We haven't seen any but I think they emerge from South to North so we are waiting. I really don't remember the 1987 horde??? On the other hand most of Newport was built since their last onslaught so all the soil was disturbed...maybe ours were all killed in the larval stage? Saw a GREAT show last night. A musical called BARE....tremendously innovative score dealing with coming out gay in a Catholic High school all with a subplot of the senior class play...you guessed it: ROMEO AND JULIET (with similar results.) Show closes off-broadway on Thursday but is moving to a new BROADWAY theater in September. Everybody including the two ushers (us) got a lovely CD of the music. Look for great things...every member of the audience stood and roared it's approval. Music is reminiscent of Hair, Godspell, Tommy! Good Chinese dinner too...AND a pound lost (14 this year...slow but down!) Linda, No boomers here but rife with possibilities...soupy and hot; we know, we walked 3 miles this morning.

Hi Y'all
Slow Sunday...sun and rain mixed. I feel lazy, and trying to get away with being a Bum today. ![]() Loretta, OUCH! Those chiggers are nasty lil snots, huh? Guess we have them and skeeters and ticks to make us appreciate the Ladybugs and Butterflys... Some of my hostas are already sending up the flower stalks. I've been out whacking them off...I think they look ratty/ugly and detract from the glory of the leaves.....plus they push the plants into Fall maturity stage...Yikes, its not even Summer yet. Montana, fingers crossed for y'all re the bad weather. Hope its settled enough for the Moms party. I froze 2/3 of that Victoria cake....may use it eventually for a Trifle base. Zip, if they come, at least they are Low Carb. • Cicadas are said to make good eating because they are low in fat and high in protein. They are considered a delicacy by many people around the world. The European settlers in North America observed the Indians eating them. During the last emergence of Brood X cicadas in 1987, a number of people in Cincinnati and Illinois were reported to have tried deep-fried and stir-fried cicadas. There was also talk of cicada pizzas and cicada candy, and local newspapers printed cicada recipes. • Experts say that the best way to eat cicadas is to collect them in the middle of the night as they emerge from their burrows and before their skins harden. When they are in this condition—like soft-shell crabs—they can be boiled for about a minute. It is said they taste like asparagus or clam-flavored potato. Hope everyone is finding some contentment in their day. later Shawnee |

Hi Guys!
We did not get the predicted Rain yet! Glad those Tornados didn't touch down last night! The choice of "Lil' Ella's Tree" is blossomng along! A Magnolia is out in front, so far, followed by a Red Maple,(as she will be the first on both sides to be born on N. American soil) The Dogwood, Norway Pine, Colorado Spruce, Elm, Oak, and the list goes on. Thank you for your suggestions those that contributed. There is still time for other choices. Her due date is the 8th of July, but it could be the 4th, then we will have to take another look at trees! The ancestry is British on both sides, with a N. American -Canadian flavor. DS in Florida with all those Palm trees, wish they would grow up here. I love the Royal Palm. They look so good at Christmas with the lights on. They would'nt last five minutes, up here! Loretta, Thanks for the site on those Chiggers! I may have encountered them in Florida along with the mosquitos. Although I have never had those welts, you poor thing. Hope the hydrocortisone does its job. What a wonderful idea for those priests if they are diabetic. YOu are so caring putting the low fat cream cheese too. I see you are practising those "random acts of kindness." What goes around, comes around! Yikes that celebration was a high carb meal. I may have to re think the Baby shower menu as it is at an Italian place. Linda, Have a great cook out! Hope it doesn't rain on you. Good easy laid-back stuff, with the paper plates, they can always go in the recycle box afterwards! Did ya make up the trifle yet with that Rum?Shawnee, Glad you managed some of the Victoria Sandwich. That is a great idea to use as a trifle base, soaked in sherry and brandy, the old fashioned way, or just with the liquor extract works both ways. I think Linda said she used Rum. Thank you for all those sites on trees. LOL! at the Cicadas being Low Carb! They sound like something DBIL, that lives in Australia, said he encountered in Africa. One night he said he saw a whole African village come to the generator lights collecting these flying locus-type things in old paint cans, buckets anything that would carry them. The large insects flew into the lights and were easy prey. Guess they were Low Carb too. He said they were a delicacy to that area.Roger, Glad to hear the show was a success, neat that you have the CD too! Is the "puter sorted now? If so, you were quick. I'll copy and paste your review and send on to DS. Barb, Hope you are resting and not getting into too much paperwork, a really bad habit of mine! Jacki, I guess the countdown starts again tomorrow! Hope ya have those feet up today, higher than your heart! Wavin to Y'all. SuSUN ![]() Last edited by SuSUN : 05-23-2004 at 04:57 PM. |

Yes Barb, the Golden Years is getting a make over and hopefully will be a much better bb. Back to basics and talking lowcarb.
Loretta, wow, what ugly little things. I'm so allergic to skeekers, fleas and spiders that I sure sympathize with you. Best thing I've found is to try not start to itch. Ever tried Vick's??? Linda, enjoy the cookout. I love to use paper plates especially in the 5th wheel. Hate doing dishes when we are camping. All for easy is my motto. SuSun, glad to see you over on the new challenge thread. You will help us stay the course with your expertise. Shawnee and Jacki, too bad you got rain. It's been pretty nice here all day and good thing. After yesterday I was ready to move to southern California. Zip, show sounds like a gas. Wish I had all those available to see. Sounds like so much fun. Best get my pork roast out of the oven before it's overdone. Family problems still there. Sure haven't gotten any sleep or been able to eat much. I want a Cinderellla life. Right now it sucks.

More thunderstorms here so I may not be on this thing very long. Geezz, what awful weather. Guess we just can't win. It's either too cold, too hot or too wet.
Good Grief Loretta, those damned things do itch, especially "there". What a nasty mite. Hope you can avoid them. Do you use Deet? I shower myself with it in the summer because of all the nasty things in this area and don't give a rats Azz if it is a toxin. It's better than scratching yourself silly or catching West Nile or some other dreaded disease. You are sweet to make that cheese cake for the priests. I'm sure they will love it. Barb, sometimes that Golden bb gets on my nerves because people don't want to do their plan correctly or just want to post other stuff. The religious crap drives me totally NUTS!! It's not something I need to see in an avatar or sig. or have preached to the rest of us. REAL Dishes and silver Holy cow! Do you actually take it with you on trips? I would probably break it. LOLRoger, Well it's great to hear you finally saw a great show after all your disappointments lately. BRAVO!! Can't say as I have seen any sexual frenzy being acted out in our yard yet either. I'll keep my eyes open. Actually I don't remember seeing them in 1987 either. Duck, those storms are passing through here again and headed east. Shawnee, hope you got away with being a bum today. You certainly deserve it. The Trifle came out fantastic if I do say so myself. Next time I will soak the cake part in Rum or Brandy. The flavoring in the custard just didn't do quite enough for me. I took the left overs to my brother next door. That stuff is too good to have lying around here. Thanks again for the recipe. Don't think I'll be eating those critters although I did eat some chocolate covered bugs back in my foolish 20's for the hell of it. ![]() Jackie, Sheesh!!! LOL thanks. Susan, wouldn't it be great to have palm trees growing here? We have a new travel agency on the parkway and they have artificial palm trees out in front of the place. People do a double take when they see them during a blizzard. LOL. Julie, hope all is going to work out for you and your family. Sometimes we just can't do anything about things and need to let the chips fall where they may. ((((hugs))) Off to lurk a bit and then bed. Jury duty this week. ![]() |

Barb...I use the pretty paper plates as often as I can get away with it
![]() OK, Montana...you've convinced me on the Trifle So the Custard stuff needs some "doctoring up" huh? dash of Salt and MORE flavoring..?Do Y'all find the prices on veggies coming down? I've eaten more "vine-ripened" tomatoes and bell peppers in the last 2 weeks than in the last 6 months... and enough Spinach to fill a bathtub. ![]() Where do I find some LC Tapioca? (does it exist?) I've found an interesting recipe for Tapioca Pudding on LCLuxury...think maybe it could be redone to reduce carbs and fat; maybe replace most of the water with DaVinci... then use only a smigeon of Splenda. Use Hood's milk, xanthan, .......WOW, that's a LOT of cream... ![]() Hehee, this might take me a while to work out. Low Carb Tapioca Pudding Ingredients: 3 Tablespoons Tapioca Pearls 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk 3/4 cup water 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 1 fresh vanilla bean or vanilla powder 1/2 cup Splenda or Keto Sweet 1 Tablespoon liquid sweetener 1 pinch salt 2 egg yolks Soak the pearls in water overnight, covered well with water. Drain the water off. Heat the coconut milk, water, cream, vanilla bean (split and scraped) or vanilla powder, and tapioca to a slow simmer in a heavy pot and cook for 1 hour, stirring often. Add the sweeteners and salt. Bring to a simmer being careful not to let the tapioca stick to the bottom of the pan. Put the yolks into a bowl and stir in some of the tapioca mixture to equalize the temperature. Add to the pan while stirring. Pour into a bowl and cool. ![]() ![]() ![]() Heard there's a Tornado warning for the NE Oregon area... quite an active Spring all over the US. Jacki ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote:
![]() BTW, your Avatar pic sure is a good one....took me long enough to get around to mentioning it, huh? Loretta, you've been changing yours a lot lately...thanks for all the pretty posies. SuSun, its gonna be interesting to see which tree is the big winner. Thanks for the BIL-Africa-Bug story. ![]() Julie, I hope our Vintage Maintainer's NEVER changes...love the easy-going exchanges here on ALL topics. It has served us well for several years, thru good times and bad, in ALL areas of our lives. The variety is certainly not boring. I think its super that a New Maintainers Thread is available for those who want/need it...and everyone is free to post a new Thread if they feel the need for OT or specific info/advice. Hope everyone finds their glasses half-FULL Life is not a dress rehearsal. ShawneeLast edited by shawneesioux : 05-23-2004 at 11:22 PM. |

Shawnee, Yup that low carb custard needs a dash of salt and some extra flavoring. ( I added more vanilla too) I think the base almond flour cake needs to be soaked in rum or something also. Maybe make the jello with rum or brandy and water??
Low Carb Tapioca??? Humm. That will take some investigating. Most likely the "fake" stuff will be made of that damned soy. ![]() I don't even know the carb count on the regular off hand, but would it be bad to use the regular on rare occasion? It's only 3 tablespoons. Gotta love that heavy cream though. ![]() We noticed the price of cauliflower, green peppers and a few other vegetables are coming down. Oh and eggs are back down too. Guess it's the season, so prices will come down until fall. I'm with you on the Magnificent, vintage maintainers thread. I hope it never changes. Hopefully the new thread will develop and cultivate good friends as we have here too. BTW are you up for a meet in Sept.? We are thinking of trekking over to the Spokane area then to meet a few other low carbers and will drive further west if you are available. Night all, God I have to get up in a little over 5 hrs. ![]() |

Ginny, I've been meaning to ask....why won't my orkids get spikes??? Damn!! Lots of new growth. Will it take a few years? I think it was too cold in that window last winter but why lots of growth and no spikes???
Shawnee, I don't want this bb to change either. Sometimes I just don't have a lot of time to address everyone. Maybe I spend too much time on the GY bb as I seem to get agrivated a lot lately. I do have some good friends over there. Just want it to go back to talking lc instead of all the other OT topics. hey there Barb, so are you staying away from the GY bb? Congrats on keeping those 5 lbs. off. Maybe you've got it licked. I'm still going back and forth with 2 or 3 lbs. but maybe thats maintaince. It doesn't bother me as I know it comes right back off again. Down to 116 this morning. Linda, are you meeting Shady and Doug over there? Last edited by Jewels60 : 05-23-2004 at 11:48 PM. |

Hey everyone!
Yes, we're alive and kicking here. Just been doing a lot of running lately, so not much time for the 'puter. Loretta, ouch on the chiggers! I haven't ever had a problem with them (even in areas where they are) but did have an episode with sand fleas one time--nasty! I'm sure it's about the same thing, but at least they only tasted my ankles! Very sweet of you to make that cheesecake! Hope the cold is gone now! Julie, glad you're back safely and had a fun trip. Hugs to you on the family stuff--hard to deal with, I know. The most common reason that orchids will grow well and not bloom is lack of sufficient lighting. Are they in a window that gets bright light? You could summer them outside (bring in if it gets under 60 degrees) on a covered porch that faces east. Phals like bright indirect light, but other genera like more direct light. Linda, have the storms calmed down any? We could use a bit of rain here, and since I watered outside some today maybe that will entice it. Hope they didn't mess up your cookout plans! Shawnee, all that talk about your cake makes me want to eat something sweet! But, I was a really good girl today at the buffet (compared to normal--they have a killer dessert bar!)! What really kept me on the straight and narrow is a friend of ours that was with us is also doing lc so it really kept me honest! Sounds like your hostas are going gangbusters, WTG! Zip, another reformat? Reckon it's time to *gulp* upgrade your system? Sounds like it's definitely time to find a new ISP! Glad you enjoyed your show this time. Jacki, WTG on the Curves and weight loss! You're doing great Barb, so did you go shopping and find anything you liked? I have plenty of clothes now for all seasons, but since it's hard for me to find jeans that fit I buy them regardless! Susan, sounds like you're acting like a typical grandma LOL! That baby won't know what hit her, all the goodies waiting in store ![]() Hope I remembered all I wanted to post. Time to get my butt in the bed....

Ginny, those orkids are in a garden window facing west. Get lots of light and some sun in the evening. Sometimes I'm afraid of burning and put down the outside shade to filter them. Whats ya think?
