Not in ketosis, maintaining, but what to do about appetite?
Maybe its just becuase TOM is near, but I'm really hungry lately. I haven't been eating too much, but I get hungry about an hour before lunch time and watch the clock until I can eat. Then in the afternoon I get hungry before dinner and do the same thing. I'm not in ketosis anymore, so is that why?
I haven't gained any weight but I'm worried about being able to keep my resolve not to eat off plan or eat too much. I tell myself that being hungry will not kill me, that's its actually good for me to be hungry once in a while, but I'm afraid I'll be faced with some temptation that I won't be able to resist. Any thoughts? Thanks, Julia

Julie can you eat more frequently? Just spread out your food so that you eat about every 3 or 4 hours. I eat about 5 x a day.
4 x of which are just small items (is 6 oz yogurt or 1/2 apple or sf jello. IT seems to work for me. Other wise I do get hungry and sometimes light headed. HTH |

Hi Loretta and thanks for the suggestion. I do that too, but it seems like even when I eat breakfast at around 8:30, then a snack around 10:30 I'm still starving from 11:00 to 12:00. I guess I'm just not eating enough for breakfast. I ate a little more this morning and did better.
Where in KY are you? I'm from Louisville Julia |

Hi
I "graze'' a lot...not into big, scheduled meals. Maybe pick the LC food that satisfies yout appetite the best, and have a bit of it at your 11 AM Hunger attack time. Best wishes ![]() Shawnee |

Hi Julie,
We live near Paducah, on Ky Lake. I am origianlly from the Chicago area. Can you include more protein in your morning meal and eat it a little later than 8:30? I usually don't eat "brunch" until about 10 or so and then I eat again around 1 or 2 pm. Loretta |

Julia, you took the words right out of my mouth. Some days are much worse than others. This appetite thing is becoming the worst part of Maintenance for me. I really get tired of having to stay on my toes with it. By the way, congratulations on your "quitting smoking". You are really brave; having to fight both demons (smoking and losing weight too) and it appears you have done a great job.

Thanks Jonah's Granny. I'm doing o.k. with the smoking thing. After the first couple of weeks its really less of a challenge than maintenance. I think its because maintenance is all about dealing with food, which we need to live. With smoking you just quit and never smoke again - you don't NEED it. It's simple. Not easy by any means, but its simple. Maintenance is complicated!
I think we have to get used to not being in the losing mode. Weight fluctuations of a pound or two are normal, but I still get a little upset when I see the scale go up. As far as the appetite goes I've decided to just try to make good food choices and exercise regularly. Maybe I won't get to 135 lbs., but that's just a number. I can't go through life hungry or I'll be tempted to binge. So as long as I don't go over 140 and I keep working on toning up I think I'm doing great. I just remember where I was a year ago and it still amazes me! Congratulations to you too! You've really done well. |

I've experienced this same thing, myself. Since maintaining I am sure I am no longer in ketosis. I can't seem to eat more then 30 carbs a day without gaining. I've tried upping but the scale goes up too. I find myself wanting to nibble throughout the day and also having more cravings. I do stick to legal nibbles but find that more and more I am wanting and turning to the low carb sweet treats. I know better but without being in ketosis it is so much harder. I am managing to stay within a 2 or 3 pound range. Sometimes the scale goes up for no apparent reason at all. Sometimes I wish I was still in weightloss mode because it was so much easier. I know that when the weather warms up outside so I can get into my garden and work it will get better. My mind will be occupied and I will be getting more exercise. This is a lousy time of year for me and I often eat out of boredom. Spring is a time of renewal for me. I feel my best. I hate formal exercise. I would much rather do something physical and productive instead of being in a gym or working out in front of the tv to a video. Just give me a shovel and a truck load of mulch to spread and away I go. So, I don't have an answer for you but just wanted you to know that you're not the only one experiencing this too. Julia, our stats have been almost identical the entire way through. You're taller then me though.

Karen - I've decided that not being in ketosis I need to watch the calories and fat a little bit more. I've started eating more lean meats and fish and cutting back on the salad dressing, etc. I am by no means denying myself, and I do have legal treats occasionally, but for the most part I'm cutting back on fat and calories to maintain.
I'm also not going any longer than 3 hours without eating. That seems to be helping. And I've continued my exercise routine. I really couldn't have gotten through smoking cessation without the exercise. But I know what you mean, I'd much rather take a good long walk around the neighborhood than jump around in front of my tv set. But jumping around in front of the tv is my only option right now, so it will have to do. Hang in there - we're doing great! Consider where we were a year ago, both almost 200 lbs.! Julia |

I'm so glad I ventured in here and saw this post! I've been trying to figure out what in the heck is wrong with me. I'm going to try eating every three hours and see if that helps!
