Advice for after Baby...
So many questions... I used to low carb, then got off track, then got pregnant with #3. I am now facing the recurring dilemma... "What do I do to lose weight after this baby comes?" Please help!! Do you low carb and go into ketosis while you breastfeed? Should you not go into ketosis while breastfeeding? Do you start at induction? What have your pediatricians said? Thanks so much for any help. KelliMM |

Sorry I have been away moving my mom and having a estate sale. In my opinion this board is a bit slower than the main board so please don't take offense that no one has answered yet. There are pleanty of people here that BF and low carb but occassionally we are short on time with our families.
Do you low carb and go into ketosis while you breastfeed? I do low carb but I do not go into ketosis while BF. I find for me personally I have to add in whole grains, oats and yogart to keep up the 1800 calorie minimum needed for BF mothers. Should you not go into ketosis while breastfeeding? It is common said that you should not go into ketosis while breastfeeding because you could pass ketones through your milk. Do you start at induction? I did not do induction when I was low carbing. I eat as many veggies as I want and add in fruits, whole grains, oats and yogart. Induction would require ketosis and Dr. Atkins advised against this during pregnancy and while BF. What have your pediatricians said? I would not mention "low carbing or Dr. Atkins" to my pediatritian because that sends up some red flags for some doctors and I don't want to listen to the anti-Atkins riot act. I do between 60-80 carbs a day and some days more. Mainly I cut out processed foods, white flour and refined sugar. I try to eat well which is what I have learned from low carbing- it is better to have good carbs such as veggies than bad carbs such as a dinner roll. Something that I do know that changed my low carbing recently (as I said before I had to add in more calories) is when I do not eat enough calories my milk production goes down. Also I was losing weight too fast. While breastfeeding you should lose no more than 4 pounds a month. Hope that helps and join us in the bouncing back after babies thread if you would like.
