what is the difference

Between the original 1972 Atkins and the newer one out? How different are the inductions/carb allowances/foods?

One of the main differences is in the total number of carbs you eat each day. Atkins 72 says you get 20g of carbs each day. You need to stick within that limit during induction and therefore you mainly eat meat, fish, eggs, and cheese, with about 2 cups of leafy greens each day.

The later versions of Atkins focus on net carbs, i.e. you look at the number of carbs in something then subtract the number of carbs from fiber to get the number of net carbs. So, for example, an avocado has roughly 17g of carbs, of which, about 13g are fiber. So you subtract 13 from 17 and get 4 - and only that 4 counts towards your daily total of 20 (don't kill me if those numbers are not exactly right - I am going from memory rather than looking it up).

The idea is that fiber is not digested and should not count against your carb total. Having the idea of net carbs opens up a wider variety of veggies that can be eaten during induction.

Different people have different success with each method. I tried counting net carbs at first and found my weight loss was slower than I liked and so I switched to a strict 20g of carbs per day. The Atkins 72 approach just works better for me.
