Sugar free cocoa and pudding mixes

Hi all,

So I'm in the beginnings of low carbing and trying to figure things out. One thing I've done is jot things on a list that other people use/like so I can buy them and give it a shot.

I had sugar free/no sugar added cocoa mix on my list. When I picked it up and looked at the label, though, it was pretty dang carb heavy, IMO! A quarter cup was like 10 grams of carbs! Same thing with the pudding mixes.

So what am I missing or miscalculating? Clearly I don't understand something!

Thanks!

Don't know about the coco, but I know that the pudding mixes have cornstarch in the ingredients, so although not sugar, other carby ingredients.

Sugar free doesn't necessarily mean low carb. Always check the carbs on any label before you buy an item.

I haven't chimed in in a while but some of the carb counts are account for the milk used to make the finished product or in the powdered milk in the mix. Use real cocoa to make hot chocolate, use water and half and half or hwc to cut down on carbs and a little sweetener. For pudding make your own from instant powder hwc and water or just half and half. Or get a custard recipe from the recipe room.

It seems anything instant that has milk products in it is higher in carbs due to fact they use skim milk and the finished product.

I've been using unsweetened vanilla almond milk when I want hot chocolate. I mix herseys plain cocoa with a little hot water in the cup to dissolve and add the almond milk (already heated to steaming) and then add stevia to sweeten to taste. If I want it a little richer I'll add a bit of heavy cream. Sometimes I add a touch more vanilla extract.

I find that the unsweetened 100% baking chocolate are best - usually <1carb/serving. So I get mine from the baking aisle. And yes, I use unsweetened almond milk too if I want hot chocolate, plus Splenda.

The Diet Swiss Miss hot chocolate has 4 carbs per envelope of mix. The Diet has less carbs than the sugar-free. Sometimes hard to find but nice to have on hand for a quick cup.

I didn't even realize they were two different products. I just thought people were using the names interchangeably!

It would be nice if sugar-free or diet on labels meant the same thing but it's not so. To be safe, always read the labels.
