How much protein are we supposed to have?

I'm 5'6" and my ideal weight would be around 120 pounds. I've been really ill lately and have cut my eating way down for now. I want to make sure I have enough protein and that I don't lose muscle mass. I'm doing the same for calcium and am taking food supplements for fruits/vegetables.

One cup of soymilk has 9 grams of protein. Is that enough for the day?

My low carb doc says no more than 20 grams per day.

You will get different answers from different diet gurus and doctors. I have always used the .5 of my weight. At 150 lbs. that would be 75 grams. Some use the .5 or 1.0 of Lean Body Mass. If my LBM is 111.28 that would still be 50-100 grams.

You will need to use your current weight, not ideal. If you used a lean body mass calculator for a 5'6" woman who weighted 120 lbs. that would still be LBM of 93.9.

Do you have other sources of protein? Eggs, nuts, avacado, cheese?

I have a refrigerator stuffed with food including eggs, nuts, avocados, cheeses, meats, etc. I'm just sick right now and not eating because I don't want to toss it back up, if you get my drift. So, I'm concentrating on soy milk because it's less gross if, well, you know.

So, I'm trying to figure out how much soy milk will be enough until I can eat solid foods again. 93 grams seems awfully high. I would need to drink 10 cups a day to get that.

I can relate. I wouldn't worry about it for the short term. Call it a fast or cleanse and do the best you can. Unless you are talking weeks or months. I'm not big on the Whey Protein drinks, but it might be helpful if you could keep it down.

Again, I wished I lived closer. I've got a big tub of the stuff somewhere.

Thanks Erin and rugaroo! I was actually able to eat last night and had two cups of soy milk. I'm getting my strength back, slowly.
