WOE: Low Carb

Hey I was wondering (since I'm not a pro chef or anything) if anyone has opinion of great spices.

Like I've used Watkins Vanilla (if I can find it) which I really like but since I don't cook much not sure if there might be other better ones out there?

I've heard Penzey's has good spices.

and for cinnamon I've heard there's different types like Vietnamese, - anyone know which the better cinnamon is? (I love whatever kind Cinnabon uses.)

And what spices would it be good to stock up on? (I tend to like Mexican, Italian, BBQ type flavors (savory not sweet). Not really a fan of Indian, Jamaican, or Greek so much).

Hey Crystal! I've heard the same thing about Penzy's but haven't ever ordered any. My go to spices are; garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, basil, oregano, parsley, and sage. I have a lot more than that, but you can add to them if you find recipes you wanna try.

As for vanilla, I buy mine at whole foods and get the organic. Just alcohol and vanilla bean. The cinnamon I think is mostly Vietnamese. You might be able to find another one at a Williams Sonoma, if you have one near you. They can be really helpful too, but their spices are pricy, I think.

Hope that helps a little!

I prefer our local Denver/Boulder area spice shop, Savory, to the chain Penzey's, but I know a lot of people love Penzey's. Savory has so many different seasoning blends that when I go there, I will not only re-stock my little jars of typical individual spices, I always like to try new blends. The cool thing is you can taste everything so you're not just buying blind. I can get a little bag or a bigger one, it's a great way to try new things.

Nothing could make low-carb cooking easier than seasonings. Not just for your meats but for making simple vinaigrettes, for your omelets and eggs, for chicken salad or tuna salad--whatever.

Crystal, you might get more responses over in the recipe help and suggestions. A lot of great cooks over there who may not venture this far!

I love Savory Spice Shop too, we have a couple near me, and beyond the single spices, I LOVE several of their spice mixes. The taste testing is fab, and their prices are reasonable, too.

I'm a huge spice and condiment nerd. Anytime I'm in a place that carries a good selection, I'm there looking for stuff to try.
