Are you a fast eater?

I eat 90% of my meals alone because my husband leaves for work around 11am and doesn't come home until after 11pm on weekdays. So, I'm usually eating while reading or watching TV, and I eat my meals pretty fast. I know that's not a good thing, but I'm afraid it's now become a (bad) habit. So, when I'm eating with other people, I try hard to slow down, putting the fork down between bites and concentrating on chewing. But I still eat too fast. Another problem with slowing down is that I hate when my food gets cold. Anyone here break the habit of eating too fast? Or do you eat fast and like it that way? Or are you a slow eater? Ex-fast eaters, do you find you enjoy food more now that you've slowed down?

I am a fast eater but I think that just goes with being a teacher. I have less than 30 minutes to eat lunch, talk to people over the age of 7, and use the restroom. I go out to eat with my family and I think fresh these people are so slow. I go out to eat with coworkers and we all finish at about the same time. I probably would eat less and enjoy my food more if I slowed down but I just cant help myself.

I take smaller bites, chew longer than I used to. I seem to eat less that way and enjoy the food more. Though sometimes I forget, and then I overeat.

Ocean, that's so funny! I was going to respond to this thread, but then thought, I'm only a fast eater because I'm a teacher. No one else will understand. I wonder if I'll ever slow down?

Ha, I don't sit down at home either. Only when I eat out. Hence, I do sometimes eat fast since I'm just standing in the kitchen at the fridge or the sink or wherever.

I used to concentrate on the slowing down; but now that I make sure to start with protein and not with carbs, carbs, carbs, I find that the overeating has taken care of itself even if I eat fast. I still enjoy the food as I am only eating what is "hitting the spot".

Fast eater here - I even taught my (now) 6 yo to remind me to slow down. There are few things she can correct me on, but eating fast, eating sugar and swearing are on the short list.

She's a very slow eater - I told her eating slow is a one helpful way to stay thin and that might be one of the reasons I'm fat.

faster eater
always was, always will be. I inhale food---can do it from across the room almost LOL

one thing I do, cause I eat so fast, is have backup food available for 'just in case'.
my tummy doesn't catch up with my mind some days....I feel like I am starving just after eaten, so I have LC food backup to eat if needed. works for me

I've always been a fast eater. Still have to be (15 minutes for lunch at work doesn't really give me time to savor each bite) But at home I have forced myself to slow the heck down. Cause if I don't, my "full" trigger doesn't get tripped and I end up bloated and miserable.

Slow eater here. I never used to be, I am an ex-hairdresser and you never had time to sit and eat (if you wanted to make any money, that is) but ever since leaving that profession it takes me FOREVER to eat. My food is always cold before I'm finished. I'm eating lunch as I type this, started eating at 2:00 p.m. It's 2:39 and I'm only 1/2 way through my lunch. I don't mind it typically unless we are in a hurry....eating fast makes my tummy hurt.

I hate that I eat so fast. I try to slow down but forget all the time. When I have my 67 grams of NSA ice cream, though, I use a really tiny little spoon to slow me down!

I tend to finish a meal in 5 minutes or less.

I eat more when I eat slowly. Pros and cons.

I too am a fast eater. It doesn't bother me at all but other people have pestered me about it enough that I've tried slowing down a few times. If I try to chew things longer I get nauseous from the texture of the food in my mouth, so that didn't work. If I try pausing in between bites (but chewing as fast and as much as normal) I found I ate more...like if you're sitting around a table chatting with friends you mindlessly graze eating way more treats then you meant to.

So for me it's best to get in and get out

Food starts to taste worse after the first few bites. Especially meat.

I eat far, far too many meals on the run or while I'm doing something else. I eat pretty quickly but sometimes I get distracted by what I'm doing and thus I have a 'pause'. Of course, I shovel it in when I go back to it!

How fast I eat doesn't seem to make a difference in how much I eat. I have reduced how much I eat but that has more to do with no longer suffering carb induced hunger. Pre-LCHF, I'd eat my dinner and be hunger an hour or two later.

I'm getting a kick out of your responses. Looks like most of us are fast eaters; I admire those of you who eat slowly. I'm working on it!

I do eat fast. I find it works best for me. The less time I spend eating/thinking about food the better.

I eat fast but definitely have learned that slowing is better for my digestive system. It also helps me to stop and be mindful of what I am eating, be grateful for my food and actually try to enjoy the process. It takes effort for me. LC helps but I stil think I can overeat if I don't stop and chew. Nice post.. And topic

Sk8termom, I love that you are from Cleveland and have a Steeler logo!!!

I grew up in a poor family. You ate fast so you would have first dibs on seconds. I couple years ago I had bowel surgery and afterwards, the surgeon told me I had to eat small bites and chew my food thoroughly. It's something I have to think about, but I find that I get full before I'm finished and I lost weight when I started doing it.

Another bad habit I have is eating the next meal before I'm actually hungry. I find that if I wait until I start to feel actual hunger, the food tastes so much better.
