1940's USDA food guide

Somebody should start making a distinction between the SAD - what the average American consumes today - and what I'll call the TAD (Traditional American Diet), which would be similar to the food guideline at the link below and which actually isn't all that bad.

It does until you read the fine print. You can get it 'in' things like cheese and ice cream. Still better than what's recommended today, right? I mean eggs AND butter? Who'da thunk?!

this is fascinating - butter was considered an essential food. I'm curious, what is SAD?

SAD = standard American diet.

Proof that once there was some sense. This predates the low fat fiasco. I believe that in that era, they also knew that if extra weight was accumulating, the solution was to cut back on bread, potatoes, sugar (i.e. carbs).

It does except when you consider (as a simplistic guide) it takes 10 pounds of milk to make 1 pound of cheese.
That's 160 ounces of milk to make 16 ounces of cheese.
80 ounces of milk to 8 ounces cheese.
So an 8 ounce glass of milk then would be approximately equivalent to 0.8 oz cheese.

I guess this is why some of us keeping our cheese ounces in the neighborhood of 2 oz - 4 oz seems to work? Of course, I'm not taking ounce weight measure in relation to fluid ounce measure into consideration, but there is likely some parity somewhere in there I guess?
