what happens with one cheat day....

I have lost 12 pounds so far, and yesterday I cheated a little with half of a brownie and some popcorn. This morning I was back up 2.4 pounds on the scale, which I was expecting. I am just wondering how long it will take for that weight to come back off. I know most of it is water weight as I clearly didn't eat enough calories to gain 2.4 pounds of fat in one night. I'd just like to get back on schedule as soon as possible, is there anything I can do besides stick with my diet and work out as normal?

Get back on plan Gabla and you will win.

i'm guessing the salt got cha mostly...on the popcorn. Try no salt today. Hard to do because they put it in everything. Get some pink salt too for your salt. white salt has fillers and junk that cause your body to retain excess water. Pink salt is just pure mineral salt that helps keep yer electroklites working good. :high5: electrolytes.

I just cheated for the first time since jan 2 last night.
I had a roll, a decent serving of mashed potatoes, some gravy and a few bites of corn.
I had basically no change on the scale overnight. I think up a half lb, but even though my scale is a nice expensive one, im not sure its overly accurate, but over time im sure its fine.
Now im back on board, and hopefully my ketostix will show some pink later today. If this bumps me out of ketosis and it takes days to get back ill be PO :)

it will definitely kick you out of ketosis, so don't be surprised. I knew going into my cheat that it would kick me out. do you do any exercise? if so it could help work off some of those extra carbs you consumed.

mimivac 03-24-2014 11:37 AM

I don't think you need to do anything special. Just start eating on plan again and wait for the water weight to recede. It usually takes me several days to a week for this to happen, but everyone is different in this respect.

I've taken some diurex pills also, do you think that would help or is it just unnecessary? and ive been drinking A LOT of water to try and flush out the water weight.

Water weight - just get back on plan.

How long it takes to recover varies by individual - definitely YMMV. Some people a couple of days, others a week. It probably depends more on what you eat in the next few days. Over time, you'll know how your body responds.

The main risk to "cheating" is that it can become a slippery slope (for many people) and one cheat can lead to a 6 month binge. Not saying that will happen to you, but that is a frequently reported outcome from cheating.

I would personally not take a diuretic because that could then swing you in a different direction and you don't want to go chasing water weight with a pill unless you're in a wrestling tournament and need to lose a few pounds so you're not kicked out of a weight class. :)

I would not take a water pill. Ketosis is a diuretic state, so a water pill on top of eating cleanly could backfire.

dgidaho 03-24-2014 12:53 PM

I agree with Ntombi. It would be best not to take a diuretic. The problem is not the water you're retaining. The problem is the glucagon that your body stored from the excess carbs. The water is retained in order to store that glucagon. Once you burn up that glucagon (which is a more readily available fuel over body fat), the water weight will drop and you will begin fat burning again.

Like mimivac, every time I eat off-plan, it takes about a week for me to get things back in order. Exercise should help you burn off the glucagon more quickly, but it will not necessarily cause a quicker drop in water weight, as exercise frequently causes fluid retention as the muscles repair themselves.

what about taking them for today until I get back into ketosis, it usually takes me 2 or 3 days. I didn't eat a lot of carbs so I don't expect it to take too long. Or should I just suck it up and wait until the water weight releases itself

just used a ketostix and its pink, moderate levels of ketones, so either I didn't eat enough carbs to kick me out (maybe 75 for the day total) or my body responded :) either way, I feel dang happy it didn't slam me out of ketosis.

I just read your post dgidaho, I guess that makes sense that I will just have to wait to burn it off. I do exercise everyday throughout the week so hopefully I didn't store too much glucagon.

Just always get back on track...I have a 1/2 bag of a sm...popcorn when we go to the movies..and just get back on track...We are going on a little getaway soon and I am planning that I will at least one time get off track with one nice meal or just one item ...but not pig out....then get back to my WOE plan like everyday...Some say they can not do that but for me it seems to work and I haven't gained any wait from it yet.....:)
Everyone here has different bodies and different ways of losing ....I just plan for when I want to have that free choice...

Letting your body resolve itself naturally is always a better solution.

Diuretic today or not - you'll weigh the same amount in a month.
