Alcohol....does the type make a difference?

My favorite is beer, but the carbs are an issue. So I was thinking of switching to rum and diet Coke, since it's 0 carbs.

But then I have read that even though hard liquor has no carbs, your body still burns off the alcohol before it burns fat.

So my question is.......do you see a difference in weight loss depending on what type of alcohol you drink?

Thanks

I guess you've figured out all Beer has carbs. Doesn't matter if they're low calorie or not. This applies to wines as well.

Best option is to find a favorite distilled alcohol, like vodka, gin, tequila, rum, scotch, etc. Though derived from high carb foods the final result is a no-to-low carb product. But beware of the flavored ones, they often have added sugar or other carbs.

Anything in excess will have side effects. From what I've read, having a couple of ounces (approximately two drinks) of a distilled alcohol shouldn't impact your LC results and this has been my experience as well.

However, where the danger comes in is having too much that might affect your resolve and make bad food choices too tempting. LOL!

I think this is something that depends from person to person. I know that when I drink alcoholic drinks I don't lose weight for a few days. So for now, it is only a rare treat. I don't really like spirits anyway, so my tipple of choice is wine or champagne. They do contain more carbs than spirits, so ymmv! I discovered for me that it doesn't matter what kind of alcoholic lc drinks I drink: I stop losing weight.

White wine and champagne are higher carb and higher GI than red, so I used to drink red wine. It never knocked me out of ketosis, however, white wine or champers ALWAYS did.

Saying that, I have since given up pretty much any booze because it's a slippery slope for me. I end up having a bottle of red wine every night and then my weight loss in non existent.

White wine is my favorite, and like Mimosa said, the drier the better as far as carbs are concerned. I try to drink only a glass or two (I measure out 5 oz so I know exactly what I'm getting!), when I drink it.

I've switched back to vodka and diet tonic because I tend to drink less of it and it's lower carb than the wine. I do think that if I didn't drink at all I'd probably lose weight faster, but I enjoy my drinks, and I account for them as I do my food in my tracker.

Although alcohol itself can effect some people, obviously the mixture of carbs and alcohol will be worse than alcohol alone.

So clear spirits like rum and vodka will be a better option than wine and beer (beer is pretty much just liquid bread).

Beer is history for me, and so is my red wine. I could rarely be satisfied with one glass per day. I don't drink hardly at all, but it seems that distilled spirits are a good choice Most of the distilled spirit are about 100 calories per 1 1/2 ounces. (Relying on memory here.) So drunk neat, with water or club soda, or diet mixer, they are a good choice. Of course, alcohol can do damage to our livers and doesn't give us any nutrition, that goes without saying, but I said it anyway.

Prosecco seems to me sweeter than a dry white. When you drink, do you limit yourself to one glass, Cavegirl? If not, you are probably getting carb creep.

Well, I'm not drinking at all at the moment because i'm trying to lose weight, but I have been living a low carb WOE since 2008 and prefer to be a ketogenic state, so prefer to avoid carb spikes or carb creeps! I find just a few glasses of prosecco knock me out, whereas I could have a bottle of wine and it doesn't. Not sure why!

I will say that certain types of alcohol, mostly wine, does have some heart friendly benefits.

But yes, it's really not good for weight loss.

But even the heart friendly benefits are only if consumed in moderation . . . and for women especially that is very small quantities. One can get the same benefit from grape seed extract. Not so much, fun, though.

There's a couple of uber light beers that contain less than 3 carbs each. The one I drink has only 2.4 carbs per can. I figure I can drink 8 of them and still be under 20 carbs. The only problem is when I'm drinking them, I want to order a pizza.

Every sip of alcohol has negative effects on your body. Sure you can get away with it in moderation without any major damage but it's still not good for you. Most doctors don't recommend a glass a day like they once did simply because the cons are more than the pros.

Who are we kidding anyway. We like the buzz and the "heart health" was a good excuse

Beer is like liquid bread and that is why I love it so much......LOL

So, would a drink with spirits in it on the weekends (Rum and coke or gin and tonic etc) really be better than beer, or does all alcohol mess up our weight loss?

I am trying to lose 20 pounds before a cruise in 2 months.

In my book, it doesn't matter what kind of alcohol it is. Sure, high sugar types might add another problem but fat loss stops when alcohol is in one's body. It does not start again until one's body has burned the alcohol off. No exceptions.

I would rather burn fat all the time than stop burning fat to have an alcoholic beverage.

Your alcohol is just in your system for few hours.

If it's just one drink it's just 1-2 hours.

So it hardly matters much if it's just a question of stop burning fat while it's in your system. What really matters is if it kicks you out of ketosis, if it holds you back for days rather than hours.

No, that is not what I mean. The calories from alcohol will be burned first before anything else. That will take longer.

Exactly!

Vodka and diet cranberry is pretty good. I had a "skinny margarita" made with Patron Silver, Truvia, orange extract and lime juice...not bad.

I don't drink beer (I used to when I was younger) or wine aka migraine in a bottle for me.

This. I am finding that even if I eat carbs, my skin looks better, my eyes look brighter, I feel more stable, my weight stays off easier, and I look years younger than I did when I drank.

For me; a heavy drinker (more than 4 drinks per episode; and those were bottled beers so I know how much it was, if you drink wine/liquor it is harder to know how many drinks you have had) drinking = aging. And if anyone drinks more than about 4 drinks a week, no more than one drink at a time, they are aging themselves. Its all there is to it.

I'm not saying its good nor bad: I felt so much better with a few drinks in than I did with a few drinks missing! So I understand if people choose to include drinking in their lifestyle. But the honest truth? It ages you.

I have just realised yesterday that I just don't feel the need to drink at all. I know I can't drink and lose weight so I'm not drinking because I need to lose weight. But generally on weekends I do allow myself to have a glass of something alcoholic if I want it. There is just no want at the moment. The weekend comes and I think that I could really 'do' with a glass of wine, and then the moment passes...

Beer now just tastes gross to me, whereas before I loved a nice cold beer. It just tastes overly sweet now.

I guess I never thought I'd be a very sporadic drinker! I have always been a regular drinker, a couple of glasses of wine (I love wine!) a day type person, but since I started NK, the need, desire and taste for alcohol have lgotten less and less. I realised I don't miss not drinking, and I don't need to have a drink anymore in social settings either. I just feel better when I don't drink I guess.

Just a realisation I had over the weekend!

ETA: but what am I going to do with all my nice wines I have in the cellar?????
