Fell off the Wagon this week - up 7 pounds :(

I'm so mad at myself. I've done this many many times before....get some good momentum going, then sabotage it. I started my program on February 19 at 266 pounds, and by last Saturday March 8, i made it to 253.2. Not too shabby for 17 days low-carbing. And on top of that, my cravings were under control and I was really looking forward to the future and actually succeeding at this.

SO what happened? Why did it start with a sandwich on Saturday and devolve into donuts, sweet coffee drinks, pop-tarts, french fries and pasta all week? Why did i stop drinking water and start drinking juice? And what really kills me, is that half the items i've put in my mouth this week aren't even things that would normally tempt me if I weren't trying to eat better!

So i decided this morning, after 5 days of denial, to get on the scale and face the damage I had caused. I was NOT expecting to see 260 looking up at me. SEVEN pounds in 5 days?! I just pushed my progress back 2 weeks. I'm kind of a perfectionist so this is really messing with me. i have a weight loss forecast spreadsheet and everything, and this is really gonna mess my numbers up. I'm kicking myself right now.

Back on plan as of this morning but i know its gonna be an uphill battle. Just when i had kicked my cravings, now i have to deal with carb withdrawal all over again. I'm convinced that at some subconscious level, i need a little drama and challenge. why else would i do this to myself?

Sorry...just needed to vent

I have a tendency to wanna over-correct to get myself back on track faster. Not sure if I should do that today and tomorrow or just start again as normal.

First of all, you probably didnt gain seven pounds of fat. Part of it is most likely water weight. If I go off plan for even a day I usually gain 5-7 pounds. Within a week I'm back down to the weight I was before going off plan. Don't try to over-correct, just get back on track. The only way this is going to mess you up in the long run is if you let it. You can do this. I have had many off plan days, weeks, even months at a time over my two year LC journey, but I have never let it stop me from moving forward on my journey towards weight loss. I have lost 72 pounds in those two years and am very proud of my accomplishments. I don't dwell on the fact that I could have already been at my goal weight. I just try to take thing one day at a time and enjoy the ride.

Good for you for coming to the board! I usually just "disappear" and keep gaining. I know you can succeed if you keep getting back on plan

Thank you for this. 72 pounds is amazing! And that is something i have to work to avoid doing - dwelling on the fact that it could have happened sooner. Focusing on the overall progress will help a lot

If I allow myself a treat off track...then I just hop back on track right then...I want get upset or throw the scales out the door...I know I took the chance and I know when I am able to do this or not....for now I don't but I will be ready when I do...Failure comes when you don't start over and just let it go ...So just smile and start over...take that one day at a time that most of us do here ...you can do it...

Get right back on that horse as though nothing happened. You can examine why and how later, but don't let it mess with you too much now. Sounds like your main obstacle right now is psychological. Think of it this way -- if you get right back on, this little mishap will be a blip and you won't even remember one week of off-plan food a year from now.

Carb bloats - and I'm sure you feel it, too.

Yep, just get back on track right away.

That's mostly water gain - and you can lose it with a few days of induction level eating. Not to say you'll lose everything, but 7 pounds of carb bloats can disappear pretty quick. I had the same bounce this past week. I was down to a good level, then a couple of evenings with some wine and poor choices and I was up 6#. As of today, I'm down #8 from a week ago.

What plan, specifically, are you following? Do be aware the fasting plans can exacerbate binging issues, and something more consistent day to day, that allows for on plan 'treats', may be a better fit for you. I tend to do better with the flexibility of a program like Atkins or a Protein Power than something that is either less structured or has me eating wildly differently day to day. Something to consider, nothing made me have cravings and overeat like trying to eat in a window. It turns out I do better with my calories spread from 5 am to 5 pm.

Everyone said all the right things. Water weight bloat. I just wanted to add you are very beautiful and keep going.
You are strong to face the scale after 5 days . Many would keep eating off plan.

Tis okay, you recognize where you went wrong. For me I have been temped like crazy with bagels, donuts and tortilla chips at work this week. I just made sure I had healthy low carb snacks to munch on instead. Just get back on the wagon. I'm sure part of the weight gain is water weight.

I think almost all of us have done this and will continue to do this occasionally...the important thing is that you have made it a five day lapse not a month, or a year...

I just want to give you a high-five for owning up to it and moving forward. I'm another one who dives head-first off the wagon, and goes into hiding. That's why I'm back here now, in fact. Your progress and commitment is awesome, especially because you don't let a sidetrack completely derail you. Go, you.

I agree with previous posts..luckily a lot of the weight you gain back is initially water so although it can be very motivating to see the loss after a day or so, the initial water weight can make us love or hate the scale from day to day…perhaps another reason to weigh less frequently if you can measure your progress in other ways. For me, weighing tends to trigger eating less if I see a good number or eating more and being hard on myself if I see a higher number..that could just be me though.

The best thing to do is remind yourself this is a way of life and it isn't a temporary quick fix…fixing your blood sugar and the way you nourish your body with healthy foods that will stabilize your blood glucose and avoid insulin spikes will not only make you look and feel better, but will be better for your health in the long run. I have to keep telling myself this too even after losing the majority of weight through years of dieting…this WOE is a lifestyle.

The crazy amounts of exercise and restricting and overindulging in crap I have done over the years wasn't maintainable and this is…it's just breaking up with sugar and emotional comfort through food.

Low carb woe is pretty unforgiving, when you go off plan - 4-5lbs gain is pretty common from a few cheats.
Flush it out with water and stick to mainly protein, it'll be gone in a couple of days.
Don't do it again

How are you doing now, Barbie? I hope you got back on track & are still there. And I'm hoping you're not beating yourself up over it. Just move forward.

Lots of good advise in this thread. The water weight can take some time to drop off. It's unlikely you gaining much, if any real fat.

Im doing better DiamondDeb, thank you! Today is my official first day back on plan, but since Thursday, i've upped my water intake and avoided sugar, so couple of those water weight pounds have disappeared. I'm feeling less bloated and more motivated today. Thank you ALL who responded! Everyone gave such good advice, i wanna hug everybody!!

@Arctic_Mama right now I'm focusing on Induction until further notice. I put intermittent fasting in my details because that's how i tend to eat on the weekends...no breakfast, a meal around 3 or 4, then maybe another meal or snack. i do think that more structure would be helpful right now as i try to stabilize my cravings.

No worries, Barbie! It's okay to vent and you are in luck because this website is FULL of support and inspiration. I agree with the other posters... just dust yourself off and try again/get back on the horse. Half of the 7lbs you have gained is initially water weight, so 3-4 days on plan will get that out of your system no problem and you will be back on track. Take it one day at a time, one meal at a time, and the results will come. We are here for you!

Cheers!

1. Barbie, you are bee-u-tee-ful!

2. Everyone else said what I would've about water weight etc. I'd just like to add to the idea of not worrying and taking it slow. I found that not treating my weight loss like a race and not giving it a time limit helps me. If I don't lose more than a pound in months and months? Whatever. If I bounce up and down 5-7 pounds for a few months? Sure, okay. I went on a trip and ate like a maniac? Well, this is a long term/lifestyle change and I'll just get back to what I now consider my 'normal' eating habits with the low carb. The gain sucks but every little moment is a learning experience.

I've been back on low carb for a year now. I've gone off plan during three trips. I had cake and McDonalds (my secret, shameful love :P) on my birthday. I've lost plenty of weight and sizes and that's what I embrace. Sure, I could have been at 'goal' already if I really buckled down and never, ever screwed up or went off plan but I'm not beating myself up over it. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it either!

Thanks so much Frogg! I appreciate the compliment

not treating it as a race will be thee single hardest thing for me. i'm my own biggest critic and such a perfectionist its ridiculous. "I need to be XXX pounds by XX/XX/XXXX or the world will end!" :

meanwhile i weighed at 256 this morning, so half those pounds are already gone, hallelujah! yesterday was tough dealing with cravings but i white-knuckled it all through the day and drank a ton of water and did a walking video, which made me feel really good.

Everyone here is so supportive and helpful, even when i know this same topic comes up again and again. I love yall for that!

Good for you Barbie, it is hard dealing with cravings, but somehow you did it. Last week was also a hard week for me, I was queasy for a few days and went off plan. Now, I have returned to induction.

Hey Barbie, you're doing a great job. Keep it up. I can relate with what you're going through. After One day and night of partying (lots of beer, three onion rings but otherwise on plan) this past weekend I saw the scale jump up 7 lbs too. I'm so frustrated because I had been trying hard to break a stall and had finally started weighing in consistently at and below the low end of the plateau-now I'm back at the top side of that months long plateau. I did not expect that one crazy day to have such an effect!

You're doing a great job of wiping the slate clean and starting again from where you are, thanks for the inspiration. I hope I'll be right behind you!
