Wow it's been 10 years!

I just realized that last month was my 10 year Atkinsiversary! I've stayed between 132 and 142 for the majority of that time. I quickly lost all the baby weight when I had my son 5 years ago and went right back to the 142 range. My DH who is also part of the 100 lb club has also maintained his weight loss now for 10 years. We have everyone here to thank for all the support and great recipes - we could never have conquered this with so much success. It's such a wonderful and helpful group of people - to anyone who is looking to do this - stay here! On maintenance, I do eat carbs but my foods are fruit, veggies, and meat - 90% - rest is made up of complex carbs. I go to the gym at least 3x a week for 1 hour and do 30 mins weight training/30 mins stair climbing. Everything is so much more effortless and stress free now that the weight is gone and I never realized how much it effected everything I did and how I felt about things. If you are starting - Congrats! If working on it - know goal is out there! If maintaining - you know what I mean..... Great big Thank You to everyone for all the help!

Congrats on your Atkinsversary!

Thanks for sharing your inspiring story. In the past, I have also lost a significant amount of weight on Atkins, but was only able to keep it off for a couple of years. It's great to hear that a loss like that can be maintained for 10 years, and indefinitely! Well done to the both of you!

I did manage to post a recent photo under the faces of low carb tab - it was odd to look back at the 'goal' picture then - I didn't seem much different.

This is a GREAT post! 10 years! Wow, so impressive.

If ever there was testimony to the long term life style possibilities of this woe, this is certainly it. At just one year in, I'm surprised how much easier it's all gotten---42 pounds less to carry around, more knowledge of how my body works, more satisfaction than I would have imagined last year at this time when I started this woe.

Boy, would I like to take this last year and X by 10---and you have! Large congrats.

That's great you have both maintained so well. Thank you for checking in an encouraging everyone - especially when all we ever seem to hear is how impossible it is to keep it off long term, if you can lose it to begin with

I so agree Arctic Mama.

And in fact, wish more folks would post stuff like this in the ML. We were having this discussion on another thread in a sub group here. The ML is a great place for beginners, and all of us. I still learn things there. But I think we all need to hear more from those who are making this work long term, and are happy and satisfied doing so.

You and others are those who do so, and I really appreciate it.

Wow!! A great big congratulations to you and your hubby!! It is so important for others to see that it can be done and is very sustainable.

I would add also, that it is important to get this lesson while still relatively young. I think it improves the likelihood of long term success (like yours) quite a bit.

Thank you for sharing your story!

Maintaining is way harder than losing, IMO.

Thanks to everyone! Maintaining is harder - but it's because you no longer have that thrill of seeing the scale constantly go down AND it gets combined with weight gain (we all have a bad weekend now and then) and the determination to immediately get on track "with the NEXT meal" - not Monday or next week or next month.........
For me, I look at the whole week - what am I eating each day? Plan out dinner menu before I go food shopping (reduces waste and impulse shopping) and stick to a routine during the week. Gives me more flexibility for the weekends while still keeping the same weight.

The key to long term success is finding a realistic routine (you can't go to the gym 3 hrs a day forever....) and a working diet - something not so difficult that you throw in the towel. Bring in new items periodically or seasonally to keep it interesting and don't wear 'stretchy' pants too much. I find that's a killer - you can be up 5 to 8 lbs before you even realize it and when you are close to goal losing even 2 lbs can take weeks of dedication so 8 can be overwhelming which I find so incredibly ridiculous after you've managed to lose 40, 60, 80+ lbs. Somehow you'd think you would just 'know' what to do but that's really not the case.

I find it very encouraging how many people are STILL here since I began researching LC back in 2003. It's such an amazing testament to how much people are willing to work together to help each get to their respective goals.
