Newbie Needing Some Assistance

Hello,

I hope you're all losing!

I'm a newbie to both the forum & Atkins.

Ok so, Monday 6th I started a low-carb diet but not strictly Atkins, by Thursday 9th I had cut out sugar completely, & by Sunday 12th I've cut out caffeine.
I'd say from Sunday I started the Atkins induction religiously.

I am being super strict with myself, I'm drinking only water (& tons of it) & will have eggs & smoked salmon for lunch & maybe like, chicken & some salad for dinner. I snack on celery, cheese & eggs .. I'm not using any seasoning or sauces or added bits. I don't even reckon I'm doing 20ng.

I've had the withdrawals. A lot of headaches despite drinking the Thames dry each day!
I'm still waiting on my Ketone strips to come so I am yet to be enlightened there ..

I just don't feel like I'm losing.. I might be being impatient here. A lot maybe water retention & I must be obviously constipated (haven't been to the toilet since Sun prob).
I just wanna make sure I'm on the right track?!

Thanks, appreciate any friendly responses

How many carbs a day are you having? Are you exercising at all? Are you eating enough fat?
Could you post a full day of food for us?
You probably are being a bit premature in worrying to be honest. Once your body adjusts properly you will lose.
I don't trust ketone strips one bit. Too many false readings. Some people like them though so if they work for you, have at them.
The constipation will clear eventually and you will feel lots better then. You may noy be eating enough though. Sounds silly but you do need to eat enough for your body to function properly.
Btw, come and join us on the UK/Europe/Middle East/Expat Quarter 1 2014 thread. Lot's of us Brits on there and all really friendly.

Yes, it does affect your cycle. That will settle in time too.

Hi Maxine and WELCOME!!!!!

Well done for choosing a healthier lifestyle.

First of all, Rome was not made in a day. So, please be patient. LC is not a quick fix tool, even though some people report big losses in the beginning. Please remember that every person is different, and will lose weight at a different rate and from different places.

Now for your diet:

Make sure you eat enough food, so you don't feel hungry. Don't stuff yourself either.
Eat plenty of fat. This will help you stay happy, satisfied and it is necessary. I like preparing eggs scrambled in butter, olive oil on my salads, butter on my vegetables, coconut oil in my coffee... You get the idea!

Is there a reason why you are not seasoning your food? When in ketosis (unless you are told by your Dr not to of course) you need more salt, not less. Also, with headaches things like some extra salt on your food, and drinking a salty broth may help reduce them.

Give it a couple of weeks for you to feel good, and for the weight to start coming off. I think you made a great start for your health, congratulations!

If you're from the UK, why not pop in and say hi on our thread? There's quite a few of us, and we're a nice bunch!

Feel free to ask as many questions here at LCF as you like, we are always happy to help out!

xxx Chloe.

I wanted to add:

For constipation, eat more fat, and take a magnesium supplement before sleeping, always does the trick the next morning!

Awesome, thank you!

Ok so ..
Breakfast - maybe 2 celery sticks & half a slice of cheddar cheese.
Lunch - 2 eggs & bacon or salmon
Dinner - last night I had burger from butchers & bacon, cheese & mushrooms, few slices of cucumber ...

My appetite has really subsided.
Sometimes if I get a real sweet craving I allow myself 1 bite of an Advantage bar

Thank so much both of you!

I've been cooking in butter but I just thought it was best not to add salt - hence the reason processed meats were to be avoided??

People have commented I look better (even though I'd still murder them for a cake! Aha)

I'm just super impatient I think

Processed meats have things like nitrates, dextrose and other unmentionables added. That is why it is not recommended to overindulge on them. But eating a bit of bacon, ham or salami never did me any harm, just in moderation, LOL! Salt is good for you, especially the untreated stuff. Invest in some himalayan salt or some celtic sea salt. These are both untreated and will add some essential minerals to your diet too.

Just don't get too stuck on the whole ketosix thing. They are less an indicator of ketosis and more an indicator of whether or not you're drinking enough fluids. If you're urine is anything other than a light, almost colorless yellow, drink more water. If it still is purple, then it's probably/maybe indicating ketosis.

I take three magnesium oxide tablets spread throughout the day and then before bed I take liquid ionic magnesium from good state. Not sure what the dosage is, I take what is recommended on the package. I also use magnesium oil and rub that on my skin... Here's a reeeeealllly long thread regarding magnesium, it's worth the read!
