Did You Change Your Attitue Towards Food To Lose Weight?
 
My DH says I am looking for excitement from my food when I should be looking for excitement in my life.

I had told him I was bored with what I was eating and I guess I went on a mini rebellion and ate what I wanted. I have food allergies so all the things I know how to cook have those things in them in one form or another (dairy, wheat and eggs).

So my question is did you have to change the way you thought about food in order to lose weight or to keep the weight off?

If so how do you view food now?

If you didnt, are you bored with your food and just eat it anyways? Do you cheat sometimes because of it?

Yes I did have to change the way I thought about food in that some foods are not good for me and I don't want them. I don't have your prohivitive list of food allergies and I sympathize in that that makes it more difficult.

I have read that some allergies can be overcome with a very specific protocol. It is the GAPS diet. You may want to research this and consider giving it a shot.

Definitely. I had to realize that my life shouldn't be centered around food anymore. Previously I would eat to celebrate something, or because I was sad about something, or because this or that happened, etc. But I have learned that's not the way to live. We only get one life and filling my body with crap and justifying it for various reasons only makes me feel sick, guilty, and ashamed in the long run. Food is for fuel, not for all of life's ups and downs!... I have restarted countless times and have had to really drill this one in my head!

No, I still enjoy food.

Am I excited for every meal? No, but I wasn't before my restart either. :dunno: Sometimes you have to just eat because you're hungry, and that's it. There were plenty of carby meals that were boring too. That's just part of life, IMO.

I have several deadly food allergies, and have for more than half my live, so I had to learn as a teenager and young adult that sometimes I can't eat what everyone else eats. Sometimes celebrations mean I'm not eating when others are, and I'd better learn to take enjoyment from the people rather than the food. I don't have the choice of just eating my allergens and suffering the consequences later, because there might not be a later.

It's not fair, but it's life.

Now, eating on or off plan isn't life or death in the same immediate way, but in the long term, it is. I choose to stay on plan because I choose to remain healthy. Two or three times a year, I'll allow myself a small serving (not an entire meal!) of an off-plan food, and that's it. The rest of the time, I'm eating what I'm supposed to, and moving forward.

The way I think about food has been changed by years of research. Both because of reading scientific facts & also because of my own N=1 experiences.

Because of that, my attitude about food has evolved from "I can't eat that because I want to lose weight" to "I don't want to eat that because it is unhealthy for me and it is probably unhealthy for everything even if they don't realize it..."

I have determined that I have food sensitivities & the foods I eliminated will not be added back in no matter what I weigh. Grains are gone for good. Dairy is out though I sometimes eat cheese on a salad when at a restaurant. That may end next year sometime. Sugars & AS have been gone for a long time, too. Eliminating the foods that made me feel bad and that caused me to want to eat them non-stop has been life-changing. Once they were gone food & eating became incredibly easy.

I am picky about the quality of my food because my goal is to be the best "me" I can be. Inside & out. I feel so good eating the way I do that I am not tempted to go back to old, bad habits or indulge in them for even one meal. Even the holidays are easy for me.

My foods are simple & unprocessed ones that taste wonderful. I no longer think about food & eating 24/7. The fat is melting away. I love my healthy lifestyle!

Actually it was the other way around. Changing what I ate changed my attitude about food. After doing low carb, high fat for a few months my thoughts and feelings about food changed. I no longer have cravings for high carb foods, and usually I don't eat foods just becuase I want a certain taste in my mouth. I still make LC recipes, and I still try to make food that tastes good, especially for DH and DS, but food just doesn't interest me as much as it used to. I sometimes still have to stop myself from eating out of boredeom or stress, but overall I find this WOE makes it very easy not to overeat.

I was a astonished that I could lose pounds and maintain a healthy weight simply by eliminating certain foods. I'd never thought of that before --- I'd always been a moderation in all things, reduce your portions person. This different way of thinking --- no sugar, little starch has made it possible for me to keep the weight within 10 pounds or so over the years. I just don't eat that stuff.

But I eat everything else with great enjoyment!

I don't think DH is wrong. The irony is that your "naturally thin" person actually enjoys their food greatly while eating it; but when it's done, it's done and don't think about food again till they're hungry again. They don't obsess over pictures of delicious recipes like it's porn (I obsessively collect recipes I KNOW I'll never get around to actually making). Or plan their next vacation meal immediately after eating the current meal (like otherwise, you'd go to the "wrong" restaurant or would just not be able to eat the rest of your vacation at all if you didn't plan it. :stars:).

I definitely don't find I'm getting that much pleasure from my food. The other day we went to a dungeness crab buffet and scarfed on crabs and prime rib and it was good; but it wasn't like, well, I'm full now so I'm good. And at home it's mainly eating just for sustenance even if it's one of those food porn recipes I was talking about that I actually made.

I did have an attitude change, tho, as far as I am able to tell myself, No, eating 12 cookies will not make you enjoy them any more than just eating 1; and as such, I haven't eaten a baked good in 2 months. With the exception of when I was a baby, I don't think that's ever been true for any 2 month period in my entire life.

With so many things, the motivation is in the process. When I started my LC woe last February, I had no idea how many ways it would change my relationship with food. I had no idea how positive I would feel about it 10 months later. Sometimes you just have to dig in and see what happens. IMO, a LC woe demands some patience, but everything worth having does.

I can honestly say the revelations haven't stopped---whether it's my delight in finding a new LC recipe I love, and there's always another great new one if you put the time and energy into it, or being amazed how satisfied I am 98% of the time on a LC woe. Still can't believe it some days.

I was so amazed when I discovered that I didn't(and still don't) have the emotional response to chocolate that I used to!!! ...and to think that there are people who don't understand that amazement because they have never had food "call to them" from the cupboard or the refrigerator because there is one portion left and needed to be eaten...:p

LCHF has freed me from the obsessive food connection.
LCHF has given me freedom to identify when an emotion is the trigger...NOT HUNGER!
Keeping my blood glucose in a normal range...that means not eating certain things...gives me freedom from that "hunger monster"...!:cool:

I have been living under a cloud of *extreme* stress and life-crashes for several years now, and was self medicating with sugar and carbs. En mass. I have never weighed this much in my life! I had to stop turning to sugar and carbs to calm myself, and that took some real re training. I have accomplished it. However, I still have my comfort foods. They are just low carb foods now, like cream of chicken soup, cheesecake, almond milk hot cocoa.

I know mine has. But, it's taken a while. I don't like being told what I can do/have. :D But, through reading and just life, I know better now what those 'foods' do to me. And how unhealthy it is for everyone, not just me.

You have some challenges, that's for sure. But, changing your mindset from I can't have to I don't want is key, IMHO I doubt I'll ever get to 'food is just fuel' because I do enjoy it and it is the centerpiece in most celebrations. It's finding those alternatives and enjoying them.

I recently was asked this. I did change in a way, but in many ways, not. I am a born foodie. Cooking is my hobby. So, I took it in an lc challenge sort of way. I have been converting old recipes of mine into low carb. I cook a lot. I enjoy it. I am always looking for new recipes to try. If I didn't focus on my food like this, I would get bored with it, and probably cheat. Right now, I have three months into it, cheated twice, and have lost almost 40 lbs! I should mention that both cheats were close to the beginning of my journey.

food also doesn't interest me as much---BUT what my problem is---and I am still trying to overcome it---is boredom eating. When I relax I like to snack. Relax to me whether tv, book, outside in the lawn chair soaking up the rays, whatever, it means munching to me. that is a hard habit for me to break. it is getting better tho :) slowly things are changing big time for me longer and longer on plan.

I think you hubby is right tho. maybe you need more outside interests IF YOU are not satisfied with other aspects of your life.


OP--I want to zip line!! I am getting closer to a good weight to do this without being embrarrassed or 'told' I was over the weight limit :) I want to find MORE and more outside activities to keep me moving and finding exciting ways to enjoy life.

but a good meal is enjoyment also. but I can not make it the centerpiece every day, all the time. it has to be a small part of the whole.

I had to change my way of thinking in that I am entitled to eat whatever food I like.Instead I had to learn to make good choices that are healthy rather than going for the pleasure and taste and comfort.Now I have developed a taste for LC WOE,but initially I had to change my attitude of feeling deprived to feeling healthy.

That's my experience too.....food is fuel....I enjoy it but it isn't anything but good tasting fuel...I went to Europe this fall..I tasted amazing food...really some of the best Ive ever had....EVER....a taste or two was enough....I savored the protein courses....the cheeses and meats were beyond awesome...
I never binged nor craved...I ate for fuel....the real focus was on the people and the travel..the culture and the adventure...the food was fun but secondary..or 3rd..forth or 5th on the list...

When I make it more than that it becomes a focus and sometimes an obsession.....not healthy for me...sometimes I just eat food to feed my body...the goal is to feed not to bring euphoric pleasure..

No. Changing my food helped me change my attitude.

When I eat quality protein and lots of veggies with good fat, I feel better, sleep better, I assume I'd have better sex, and feel better about myself.
