Ketosis

So, I've been doing low carb on and off for years, but I'd forgotten how good it feels to be in ketosis. My brain likes it! However...I need tips now on how to deal with keto breath and the lovely slightly metallic taste in my mouth.

How do you all deal with it?

Pop a few Cloves in your mouth. I use them and it helps!

I find the metallic taste very bothersome. Drinking water doesn't seem to help but the stronger tastes of tea and coffee seem to 'drown' out the bad taste a little. When I find I can't stand it and am unable to brush my teeth and rinse with mouthwash I occasionally use Sugar Free BreathSavers 3 Hour Mints. They work pretty well but they contain 5 calories each and also contain sorbitol & aspartame as well as other chemical sounding ingredients. Yuck!

I've not let it bother me for 6 months, but with the possible prospect of dating I got some breath spray, as I couldn't find mints or gum I was acceptable of. Breath spray not great tbh

3 hour mints sound good. I will work on drinking more water, and hey, another reason to drink coffee? I like it.

I've never tried cloves before--will look into that one.

And yes, 84K, I don't want to scare away any potential candidates.

It goes away after becoming ketosis-adapted. Ii is my understanding that it is just a bit of a sweet smell (ironically).

Yes, once you're keto-adapted, your body mostly switches to a different type of ketone, usually not expelled by breathing (or in urine).

Being keto-adapted takes several weeks to a couple of months of being constantly in ketosis. FYI.

Does anybody else have other symptoms of ketosis? I find I can feel when I'm in it in my muscles. Like they're kind of burning like after a good workout. Anybody else feel this?

I started in the beginning of August, and still have the metallic taste. I brush my teeth about SEVERAL times a day.....

You may not have become fully adapted which is when those ketones become much less. The thing about becoming fully adapted is that your body switches to the beta hydroxybutyric acid.

If you are floating in and out of ketosis, you will continue to have those 'symptoms'. It can be tricky for some people. It generally requires a low enough carb intakes and can mean moderating protein as well. Important is to have no slips for 6 wks or more.

Be careful about brushing your teeth too frequently. There are consequences to that as well. Some people chew on parsley and other natural remedies instead.
