Successful Long-termers-Do you carry food everywhere?

I know this sounds silly... but one of the reasons I haven't been able to stick with LC is because I socialize a lot - other peoples houses, bars, restaurants... I want to eat intuitively and normally for the long term - without having to obsess about carrying things I can eat in my purse wherever I go. I live to have fun, so I refuse to stay home or starve (and then cave in and binge) because I can't have something.

Any words of wisdom from the successful long-termers who have really made this a lifestyle? Thanks!

No I don't. I have an Atkins Shake in the car for emergencies (like real emergencies, as in I can't get to any appropriate food for many hours, which means I have had maybe two this whole year), and I keep beef jerky or a couple of giant Slim Jims in the glove box, but again, I very rarely eat them. I had to throw out a couple because they got stale.

I eat out fairly often. I can almost always find something to eat wherever I am, despite the fact that I eat very strictly and have several deadly food allergies to boot. Even with cuisines that are traditionally carb-heavy, I have no problem finding something I can eat.

Sometimes I'll have a couple of appetizers as a meal, or ask for my favorite Vietnamese pho without noodles (never a problem), or sub out grilled veggies for the starch, or just swap with a willing friend. (One of my best friends is vegan, and we eat together all the time. Sometimes we'll ask for an extra plate, and I'll just give her my starches and she'll give me her cheese or whatever.) I eat Greek, Thai, Korean BBQ, American BBQ, Mexican, Chinese, American diner, Italian, all kinds of foods, and I walk away satisfied 95% of the time. And guess what? If I can't, I won't starve for a few hours.

It can work if you think creatively.

You might not be looking for my suggestions; I think that what most people call "normal" is not normal at all but unhealthy processed foods.

I've found the nutrition that my body loves & that I am satisfied with. I don't plan to add junk/unhealthy food back in at all. Ever. So eating a little bit is not an option for me. I don't want those things in my body.

There are no foods I CAN'T have but there are lots of foods I choose not to have. That is a very important difference. I've done too much nutritional research to ever go there again. I won't make exceptions for anyone/anything & I plan accordingly. I am not tempted to go off my plan even when out at a restaurant or at someone's home surrounded by holiday treats.

I keep raw almonds in my car for emergencies so I don't get over-hungry when running around town. I hate feeling like I'm starving when I get home, too. It leads to over-eating and feeling completely out of control.

I never stay home out of fear of the food being offered. I love to socialize with friends & family. It is about the company not the food. If anyone questions my food choices - or lack of the carby/sugary one I simply tell them I'm there for the company. Very few people will argue with a compliment directed at them.

I have packed food in a cooler & would not hesitate to do it again but the need rarely arises. Once in a while I have to take something to a friend/relative's house but most of them know how I eat by now and that helps.

Most restaurants are pretty easy. I can usually find at least 1-2 items to choose from even at a carby place. I do my best to know where I'm going & make sure they have good options for me. Most places have online menus these days. If they don't have obviously good options listed I ask about ingredients used.

It does take some effort & planning. And it is worth it.

I used to carry a bag of food everywhere! lol. But I don't do that anymore. I eat very high fat and very low carb and it keeps my appetite under control. I'm diabetic so I always have a small bag of nuts in case my blood sugar drops but that has only happened to me once and that was when I was in the hospital and my blood sugars were all jacked up. I don't go to social events hungry though. If I'm not sure there will be something I can eat I will eat before I go if its going to be over my evening meal time.

I also don't carry food. I might have a bulletproof coffee or tea to stave off hunger but usually you can find something that can be squeezed into your plan.

As time passes you might find your carb tolerance gets higher or it may not. In the weight loss stage it is a dicey game to play. I recently was invited to a bbq by my new boss and I calmly decided to step off the wagon for a cheesecake I had wanted to try for the longest time. No biggie. I had the smallest piece ever and it was ok. However I have been at this for months so this is different to eating everything in wild abandon. You may find that you can eat a treat in a few months too. However food will not be/ cannot be your entertainment anymore, ever. It will be just one of the pleasant things in life. Eat beforehand or ask for replacements in restaurants . It really can be done. If you had a deathly allergy to all carbs what would you do then?

After all you are not there to watch the mastication of others but to chew the fat about the state of the economy,what so and so did the other week etc . That is to say you care about the meeting . Does anyone care if you have a long drink of diet lemonade and and vodka ? If they do,why? Don't let anyone ride you over your choices . Friends don't do that.

When I socialize at someone's house, I always take a dish with me that is LC friendly and I always take enough to share. I have yet to have one of my dishes "rejected" by the other people at the gathering, in fact most of the time it is one of the first gone (likely because it's so yummy!)

I travel for work and eat out all 3 meals for weeks at a time. I can always find something low-carb on restaurant menus. At the very least the chicken caesar salad is an option. I just look for meat and vegetables.

It is rare that I carry food around with me--except maybe olives or almonds or pumpkin seeds on the plane so I am not tempted to eat the provided snacks.

I socialize, eat out and travel without difficulty. I just returned from a business trip overseas. I was able to stay on plan, despite eating every meal in a restaurant, attending events where I had no control over the ordering and long flights. I do not speak the language in this country, but still managed to order foods the way I wanted/needed to eat them.

At a party, I ate the fillings out of sandwiches, drank sparkling mineral water and had a wonderful time. No one asked me about what I ate or drank. It was a non-issue.

I did bring several portioned bags of almonds with me, in the event I became hungry and did not have an appropriate alternative. But, I really did not need them, other than on the plane.

I enjoyed delicious food, with minor substitutions -- like removing bread -- and had a marvelous time. It is very doable, if one has the determination to make it so.

I plan ahead. If I am going to a party, I eat before. I do not count on low carb food being there. But, sometimes it is easier for me to bring food.
Flying to Seattle next month. I will eat a big lunch prior to boarding. Have dinner when we land. But, on other flights, I have brought my food.

I used to keep nuts in my car or purse just in case, but I seldom get that really deep hunger or weakness I used to get. I do fine with restaurants too. It actually helps me not to have so many choices. If I don't eat the carby food I don't miss it.

Private homes or parties can be a bit tougher. I never want to insult anyone, but I'm also not going to eat things I believe are not good for me. I just say I'm grains and dairy intolerant if I feel I have to, like if I'm invited to a sit-down dinner. I eat and compliment what I can. Fortunately, it all usually works out for me. Food is usually offered buffet-style and no one cares what I eat.

If anyone does care and finds me annoying, which is possible, lol, they just won't invite me.

I also socialise a lot and never have problem eating at either restaurants and at friends house. I always find something to eat in way of protein and vegetables and I do not hesitate to ask to revise the menu.
Yesterday my husband felt like a pizza before a movie so we went to Pizza Hut. I had warm spinach salad w grilled chicken, delicious! and he had a pizza. I did eat the topping of one piece which is legal on LC., I brought some nuts and berries in a baggie and ate that instead of popcorn. I know you are not allowed to bring food at the movies but one does what one has to do. You just have to make healthy choices that are within LC woe.

I used to carry a LC bar or almonds in my purse all the time for a Just in case thing. Today we had a Big lunch at our church. I didn't know what people were bringing and didn't have a chance to prepare anything to bring with us since my Mom had forgotten to tell me about the lunch until about 30 min before we left to go to church! Sh
e swears she told me but I know she didn't LOL! So I threw a bar in my purse just in case but didn't need it. Yes there were a Lot of HC stuff and a Huge table of HC desserts but I stuck with the smoked turkey, ham and salad on the table and was Very happy. I can almost Always find something LC I can eat about anywhere I go.

I carry my lunch to work, but other than that, no, I will eat out or eat socially. I do well with a moderate carb plan now, and I use the Shangri-La MCT oil shots to neutralize the effects of going off plan (kills the appetite).

Carrying around some healthy snacks isn't weird, and it doesn't make you un-intuitive, un-normal or anything else. I know tons of people who do it, from all WOEs, HC or LC. You never know when you might get stuck in killer traffic, have to stay at work late, go to the ER with your kid at 7pm and miss dinner, or just get extra-hungry one day. If carrying a Ziploc bag of pistachios is the difference between me feeling OK about being alive or having a massive headache/crankiness wd rather be the unglamorous one cracking shells lol

for me it never stops being hard. restaurants not as bad as parties and dinners at friends' houses!

it's annoying to have to eat beforehand and try to resist almost everything, but it's like being an alcoholic with drinks being served. you just grit yer teeth and do it!

I agree about always bringing food to share to parties and dinners. and yes, they gobble it up much to the annoyance of the hostess in many cases. my mashed cauliflower is always gone in a flash at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I feel like talking up the great potatoes they aren't eating to try to get them to leave it alone for me! LOL

I use to keep a LC bug out bag now unjust jeep nuts, pork rinds and Atkins bars in my car in case of emergency . I don't usually eat the bars but sometimes they will do the trick when I've been running all day or want candy. I don't eat LC treats as a norm . Pork rinds always alway always in my car!

I use to always have a serving of mac nuts or coconut butter with me at all times but unless I am travelling, I found that they are no longer needed.

I don't bring food anywhere - I've found everything from parties, restaurants (regular or fast food), foreign travel, to being at someone's house accommodating in terms of an ability to eat sans sugar/starch. Really, I just have to be a pointer dog about it. Diabetics can make it work without a hitch; so can I.

Not usually. I have food at work such as almonds, beef jerky, etc. if I get hungry, but I generally don't carry stuff around unless I know I am going to be somewhere where availability of LC food is highly questionable. However at restaurants, etc. I can always find something LC to eat. Keep in mind eating "normally" is what got us here in the first place, so you may need to give up that notion to be successful.

I socialize quite a bit, too, and eat out 3-4 times a week. I've never carried food with me and am always fine finding low carb stuff out at restaurants. That's part of the reason why I love this WOE -- you can eat out and not blow it.

Thank you all!

Thank you all for your words of wisdom, tips and tricks. It sounds like measured out baggies of almonds is the "go-to" emergency snack. Restaurants can be pretty easy with the right mindset.. Other people's houses are tougher, so don't go in too hungry - and socialize rather than focus on the food. And, drum roll please - I won't DIE if I am a bit hungry.

I never wanted to follow a "plan" again because of many failed attempts.. but, trying to eat normally hasn't been working.. So, I am going to give it another shot.. With the key this time being not to obsess and not try to be too hard on myself if I am not absolutely perfect. That's when I get myself into trouble.

No, I do not carry any food with me. The whole point of low carbing is that it decreases your appetite so why would I carry food with me?

I like eating only twice a day and if I am a little hungry then it's no big deal. A little hunger never killed anyone and it makes the next meal taste even better.

I usually plan it so that I can eat at home because I prefer my homecooking because I know what ingredients go into it. But, restaurants are pretty easy too - unbreaded chicken, steak, fish, salads, and skip starchy sides. At people's homes I just eat what I can without making it a big deal. I can always eat after when I get home.

I carry some food in special circumstances, typically involving conferences and travel.
More of the emergency stash others have referred to. My standby's are pumpkin seeds, packages 1 oz meat sticks, and a small dropper bottle of MCT oil for my coffee.

I don't bring food with me unless I am traveling, and in that case I just bring little packets of nuts. Eating this way doesn't interfere with any socializing, holiday meals, or restaurant meals for me.

Sometimes but not as an everyday thing. I don't go to restaurants and hardly ever in other people's houses so it's not even an issue. If I'm going to be gone long or going far away I always grab my laptop..and my backpack has plenty of room to stuff other things I need like nuts or seeds. I I used to use Think Thin bars which taste way better than Atkins and didn't stall me but I found the longer I did keto that the more sensitive I got to them. I keep a small container of protein powder in there and a shaker cup with measured lines so there is no need to mess with scoops.

Starbucks tends to be my emergency stop and there is always one around. Those 800 calorie lattes I get end up lasting a few hours. They also sell nuts. Other than that, I don't touch fast food LC friendly or not.


I actually got screwed recently when I went out one night because I ended up stuck there all night. This was about 4pm-6am. This never happens so it was totally unplanned. It was also the one time I had my bag but no food in it. I was hungry but played the "nut hungry" card because all they had was carbs. Starbucks was actually an option before that happened but I couldn't even walk anymore and it was inside an Airport. I finally got out of there about 6am and Starbucks wasn't open so I settled for a latte made with "cream" (might've been half/half but better than milk) and no flavoring from some donut shop.

Some believe eating every few hours keeps your metabolism up and your body gets used to it. Hunger is a signal for a reason. Diabetics also usually need something every few hours, LC or not.

I dont carry food except the odd snack in my purse but I will eat before going to a party just in case there isn't much for me to eat there. Restaurants are fine, I can always find something.
