I cut out all dairy for a week with no benefit. Maybe I should have gone longer but it was too restrictive for me. Remember that everyone is different and my results will not predict yours.

If cutting out cheese is to "secretly" cut out calories I would not bother. If you think you might have an allergy/ sensitivity then by all means try it for a week. I have been without cheese for some weeks not by design but just the way it happened. I did not see any difference.

A couple of years ago I eliminated dairy for a couple of months, and it really got the scale moving again.

My dh was stalled and I suggested he eliminate dairy, and now he's losing weight. It's definitely worth a try.

We eliminated cream, yogurt, and cheese, but not butter.

it is worth a try. everyone has different body reactions to dairy. you might find it helps, or no difference.

I tried it for a 'short' time, like 3 days and I didn't notice anything other than I was miserable I am a cheese hound and without in on LC I swear I couldn't survive.
I do get down the scale with cheese, I just gotta watch that amt. I stick to about 3-4 oz. per day tops.

Helped me stopping it , I love cheese but it constipated me and the high sodium content made me retain water. Since stopping it I lost faster.

Losing cheese would not make this a sustainable woe for very long for me, I would hate this and it would become a DIET To me.

It helped me immensely.

I ended up eliminating dairy completely several months ago. Any food that makes me crave it & eat it uncontrollably cannot be good for me.

My nutrition is very clean & mostly unprocessed. Eliminating dairy was the last piece of the puzzle. I am finally at peace with food. I will not ever allow anything or anyone to mess with my peace again.

The best way to know is to try it for a couple of weeks. See how you feel without it and if the scale moves faster. For me like others here, taking cheese out would be too restrictive to maintain. If it's slowing me down, then I'll lose weight slower. That's a decision I made long ago on this woe, regarding how much I'm willing to cut out.

But I'm still losing steadily if not quickly, so I don't think I have huge issues w/dairy. As others have noted, they do and did, and cutting it out helped them move the scale.

There's also the option of cutting DOWN on cheese w/out cutting it out. There's never any easy or quick answers I've found, just trial and error to find what works.

I eat dairy -- cream, cheese, full fat yogurt -- but never go over 4 oz a day.
Cheese is easy to overeat, imo, because it is just there is the frig ready to eat without prep. But it's not a trigger for me and I like the variety and taste it offers. So as long as I continue to lose it stays in my woe. If/when I stall, I'll reconsider.

Stopping dairy enabled me to lose the last 10-15 lbs. I did tend to overdo it and my original low carb plan cautioned against more than an ounce or two per day as I recall, if one needs to lose weight.

It took me a couple of weeks to get past a deep sadness about giving it up, but then I was fine. LOL Withdrawal.

The closer I stick to just meat and veggies and plenty of fat is ok, the better I keep weight off.

No, actually I had to start eating more cheese (raw) to improve my digestion and ultimately keep from overeating. Cheese is a low carb, high fat protein source. Excellent choice for protein for LCers.

As I suspect you can tell from all these replies, this is an entirely an individual issue.

I tested my own tolerance for dairy based entirely on my food sensitivities --I.e., I was losing fine eating cheese,but I experienced some gastro issues. I did two 'elimination' diets--one for dairy and one for gluten--and I discovered that I was best off eliminating both. I eat butter, but no other dairy.

As others have noted, the only other time I avoid a specific food is when it is a trigger for me to overheat.

About 70 lbs from my highest weight. I lost 20 lbs in 2004 and kept regaining and relosing a lot of that until 2009 when I discovered low carb eating via Bernstein. Similar to Atkins. I was trying to lower my blood sugar and prevent diabetes.

I lost 5 lbs a month (on average) for 6 months, then hit a stall for a year and a half. My consumption of dairy kept going up and I struggled not to gain, beginning to eat more without being satisfied. Dropping dairy helped that. Especially cheese.

It's worth a try if you're stalled.

Giving up dairy cleared my up my lifelong acne. That is reason enough for me to leave it out of my diet. Can't say that I lost much weight because of it though.

I mix up my cheese and tend to not have it every day. I may have some cheddar once a week, maybe twice, cheese sticks I may have twice a week, Brie I will have some weeks when I am not eating cheddar, and cream cheese ( which isn't a cheese really?) I will have several times a week. I love cheese, but since low carbing, I don't crave it all the time like I used to, nor do I want to eat as much as I did before. Now cream...oh my, heavy cream in coffee! I know eventually I will have to cut down on that, but I think the fat has actually helped me slowly continue to lose. We're all such individuals though!

LC is already too restrictive, I can give up sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, corn and processed foods but do not ask me to give up dairy. I love my cheeses. I do have it in moderation and not everyday.

If you have a food sensitivity, you'll actually crave that food...

Cheese is one of those for me. If I can go without it for two weeks it's like giving up smoking. Woo hoo! I'm free! I can't believe cheese just seems like any other food to me now! Take it or leave it. I'm totally in control. It's no longer a big deal. One little piece won't hurt... and I'm off again.

Note, it's not that I overeat it. I just love it. Strangely a lot. And I also love legumes, which I'm allergic to. Probably related. I've read it has something to do with your body getting used to the immune reaction and feeling off without it.

I do lose faster without cheese.

I have given it up for weight loss runs here and there. After reading about vitamin k2, I am eating a small amount daily. I can easily get out of control if I am not careful with it.

I will cut it out again if I need to. It does help.

KT, just wondering what you found out about vitamin K2? I have been taking it in a supplement combined with D3 for better absorption but wonder if there is more to this?

That is a good thing - K2 is supposed to prevent vitamin D toxicity per Jaminet/Perfect Heath Diet book (you can search inside the book if you look on Books on Google.

Chris Kresser has a good article on K2 (comes up easily on google search).

I can't remember the original source for why gouda is one of the highest sources of K2, but I remember it because I love gouda cheese!

I started reading about K2 when a research study came out a few months ago indicating K2 may help prevent Parkinson's Disease. Then I read it helps prevent cancer.

I couldn't live this lifestyle without eating cheese - as a vegetarian it is my only real source of protein. I love love love cheese - it makes everything taste better!

When I cut out dairy I did lose noticeably easier/quicker. But honestly, I'm just not willing to keep doing that. I love my cheese way too much to go without it and if I'm going to make this a long term way of eating I have to be happy with it.

Still getting to have cheese is one of the main reasons I chose to go low carb. I lost 90 pounds eating cheese and stalled out before losing the last ten pounds. Those last ten pounds might come off if I gave up cheese, but I am just not willing to. I am okay with being just a few pounds overweight if I can still enjoy what I eat. Now if I were still 100 pounds overweight, it would be a different story.

I agree with Ocean, I gave up cheese to shed the last few pounds for my goal. It worked, but as soon as I started eating it again a few pounds came back. I`d rather have a few extra pounds as long as I can have my beloved cheese. That being said, when I was losing consistently during my journey I was extremely strict.

I tried to give it up, but that only lasted a couple of days! I don't use it for a snack any more and limit it to meals or salads. I'm limited on food I will eat and absolutely was eating to much cheese and pork rinds!
