Sugar Alcohols?

Hi all,

I have a question about SmartWaters, PoweradeZeros and a few other drinks I enjoy. They say zero calories but 2-3 carbs per serving. Would those be the sugar alcohols similar to those in the Atkins shakes? The shakes don't seem to stall me but I'm wondering if I should be counting the carbs in these other beverages. I always thought if there weren't any calories then there really shouldn't be any carbs. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Atkins shakes don't contain any sugar alcohols. I am pretty sure the sugar alcohol that is in the drinks you mentioned is erythritol, which by most people's standards is considered the "best" sugar alcohol. It generally does not cause any digestive upset and generally does not cause elevation in insulin or blood sugar.

erythritol is normally counted as zero calorie on labels. this is a quote from a website on this subject
Zero calorie: Erythritol has 0 calories per gram for food labeling purposes in the United States, Europe and Japan. This 0 calorie value is based on erythritol’s unique absorption and elimination process which does not involve the metabolism of erythritol.
it's not normally counted as carbs either though, unless it's counted as fiber. I think I read that somewhere. is there an offsetting fiber amount on the label?

in any case, if there is erythritol in the ingredients, I don't think you need to worry about or count those carbs.

Thanks Ravenrose. I did look for fiber, but didn't see any of that either. Glad to know I can keep drinking guilt free
