The price of bacon...

Is it out of control where you live? It seems to be going up, up, and away.

The cheapest I can find it is $5.96 per 16 oz. package at my local Walmart Neighborhood Market. I swear it was $4 and change not that long ago... And I though THAT was high.

Are you also seeing this trend?

I noticed this in the past week also. No matter...I'm eating bacon.:)

jokath 09-14-2013 08:22 PM

It's the same here. The last time I checked, a couple weeks ago, it was near $18.00 for 3 lbs. Instead of buying that I bought a package (3 lbs) of bacon "ends and pieces" for $8.00. It cooks up fine and it tastes just as good for half the price!

That Girl 09-14-2013 08:58 PM

I was floored when I went to buy some...it's $7.99 around here and I just refuse to pay that. The crappy bacon was going for $6.99....no thanks.
pork sausages were 2/5.00...I bought that instead. crazy!!

jhbyrd 09-15-2013 05:50 AM

Same here but I HAVE to have my bacon to go with my eggs (I like to fry my egg in the bacon grease:yummy:).

Make your own from pork belly! It's cheaper and tastier. You will never go back!

princessmommy 09-15-2013 06:03 AM

Yep here too! I swear I remember the same bacon we Love being 3.50 last yr and now it's 4.99 for a 1 lb package! Above our tight budget so i've had to switch to sausage but I Miss my bacon Soo bad! :(

erinmarie 09-15-2013 06:18 AM

It is 4-8 bucks a lb here! 13 for a package of three 1 lb boxes at SAMs... We are currently bacon less but I'm missing it

Gibbs 09-15-2013 07:26 AM

Aldi's, a pound of center cut, $3.69. Not salty and cooks up very nice. MMMMMM

Kittycatmom 09-15-2013 08:18 AM

It was $6.99/lb yesterday at Wegman's. I'm not doing without bacon, though. ;)

trishthedish 09-15-2013 09:04 AM

My husband has nicknamed me 'Bacon Girl' since the smell fills the house every morning while I get ready for work. I won't deny myself my pleasure, but I did buy the Canadian bacon this week at $3.89 to see if it does the trick.

I'll spend what I have to spend, but I am shocked that it keeps going up and up. I haven't read anything about pig shortages. What the heck?!:dunno:

GME 09-15-2013 09:16 AM

IIRC the drought last year caused the price of feed to up so much that farmers slaughtered a lot of their livestock early rather than feed them. It seems like prices went down for a little while last year about this time. Now there is a shortage of market weight animals, so price goes up.

For years by "bacon limit" had been $4/lb. I have had to raise that to $5.

Trigger828 09-15-2013 10:32 AM

I am about $3.99 on sale for store brand which are good. I only buy on sale and this week I had 3 coupons, that were $1 off Smithfield. got 3 packs for $4.49 each.

any and all sales I grab and freeze. but yea, prices are thru the roof.

I saw on a little article on the net that food prices to increase around 40% due to flooding crops and drought crops and more. Just what we all need ;)

Price of bacon

Here in Houston, Kroger has Oscar Mayer for $3.69 and Hormel Black Label 16 oz for $4.19. Walmart has had Rath for $2.88, a 12-oz package.

I nuke my bacon and fry some green onion and eggs in the grease. Mmmm!!

ArdMaine 09-15-2013 10:59 AM

Market Basket had some for $2.99/Lb it was good, too!

Purple Crayon 09-15-2013 11:07 AM

Not just bacon, ALL groceries have gone way up in price.
Used to see chicken leg quarters on sale for $.59. Now the sale price is $1.59.
Prices aren't going up by nickels and dimes. They are going up dollars at a time.

freeman525 09-15-2013 11:38 AM

I don't smoke and I rarely have an alcoholic drink. I will let bacon be my vice and spend my xtra $$ on it. :)

Bacon is so outrageous, dh and decided if we want bacon it seems more cost effective to go to our local casino breakfast buffet for $6 a person and gorge on omelets and bacon!

CurlsNCuffs 09-15-2013 02:12 PM

I am shocked too! Hate it.

FindingMyWay 09-15-2013 02:16 PM

Maple Leaf bacon was on sale at Walmart testerday. $2.97 a package. That's about the same price as a dozen eggs in my area.

That's what they said, but I haven't noticed the same increases in other pork cuts.

I can take or leave any other pork cut, but bacon is worth almost any price. Based on the responses here, I am not alone. I bet "they" know that.

Too bad only so much bacon can come out of each hog. Wouldn't it be nice if it was more like ground beef where almost any cut can get tossed in.

Biggy Fat 09-15-2013 03:03 PM

On the subject of bacon (I love bacon, BTW), what brands do you buy? And is it just the regular kind of bacon (sugar cured and all) or is it low sodium, no sugar added/sugar free kind?

I used to buy Gwaltney brand because it was no sugar added, but in the past year or so I've been buying Thick Cut Oscar Myers or Thick Cut Hormel. These are the two brands my local store carries that I like.

Kittycatmom 09-15-2013 04:17 PM

I like Oscar Mayer .

I am part of a local large buying group for meat, and we regularly do a pork order in our group from this amazing farm. They do clean bacon too, and the order before this one we ordered so much bacon they had no loin chops :stars: to fill those orders! Which were also significant....we all asked could they bacon other parts of the pig ...pleeeeease....and they just didnt get it! Next time we ordered less bacon and still got our chops. But yes, they really should look into baconing other parts of the pig!

MissBeeps 09-15-2013 06:27 PM

The only kind of bacon I like is the thick cut deep smoked Applewood bacon at the meat counter of my local Von's. It is by Daily's. It used to be $4.99 regular price but was almost always $3.99. Not bad at all considering it's a full pound. Unfortunately it has just gone up $1 a pound and is now never on sale. I don't like bacon very often anyhow (and don't like other pork at all other that really good Italian prosciutto,) so we're just not eating it right now. I'll buy it if I need it for something particular but not just for eating as bacon strips.

CurlsNCuffs 09-16-2013 05:34 AM

I bought 3 lbs yesterday - at Food Lion - Hickory Smoke Store brand - I love it. $11.99

In the U.S. if you gave someone bacon made with anything other than pork belly, they might think it tasted good, but they wouldn't call it bacon. :)

lterry913 09-16-2013 07:03 AM

In U.S. if you live near a GFS gordon food service store they usually have thick or thin cut for 12.00 for 3 pounds...it goes on sale for 9 or 10 dollars about everyother month or so. If you know a business that is a member you can just saythe name of the business and get an additional 5 o/o off...so on sale with discout 9.50 for 3 pounds.

Good luck and yes the price has gone up quite a bit, I agree. Happy shopping all.
