This is why it pays to ask....

So, we went to a new burger place (at least for us) last night. Whenever we get burgers, I (of course) always just get mine bun-less and knife and fork it.

Well on the menu was a big banner, that if you were going lower carb, you could get your burger on a low carb tortilla and broccoli instead of fries! Wow - how cool....(except the broccoli part, since I hate it, but I digress...) the cool thing was that they genuinely seemed to be making an effort for low carb options.

Just to be on the safe side, though I asked the waiter if he would be kind enough to check the carbs and fiber on the package. God bless him, he was young and confused, and first came back with calories and fiber (2 grams), but then he went back for me and checked out the carbs for me....51 GRAMS.

Yeah - their low carb wrap had net carbs of 49 grams. So, I just politely thanked him and told him to hold the wrap, too and to just do the burger no bun, no wrap and with a salad. All was well with the world again.

God bless that nice little 20 nothing waiter for being so accommodating, too, on a busy Friday night.

HOLY COW!!! How do they call that a Low Carb Wrap???? Yikes, I've never eaten one, unless I made it myself, but that sounds like as many carbs as the bun!

God bless my poor hubby too - he used to be mortified by all my special orders....a bacon cheeseburger, no bun, no ketchup, no pickle or onion, but with mayo and a salad on the side, no croutons or onions and ranch on the side. (Yup, you can call me Sally.) He actually has gotten pretty used to it now as long as I don't ask him to order it for me!

So, I thought he would go over the edge with my interrogating the poor waiter last night, but he didn't - he just sat their quietly and ordered his food exactly the way they prepare it to level things out for the poor guy.

This happened to me today, I ordered a hamburger, no bun, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo. the waiter looked at me and said " you know we have low fat salad dressing."
I said "that is nice but mayo will do fine, thank you".

Making a call or sending a note to the owner/ manager telling them how great the waiter is would be a great excuse to school them on 51 grams of carbs NOT being low carb. (and could get that nice waiter a raise come review time.)

You know what? That is a great idea - he really was sweet. I hope I still have the receipt around with his name on it. I think it was Justin, but my memory is not what it used to be!

Absolutely! I love to compliment good service to management.

And I wonder if maybe Justin misread the package. You never know. I would still have skipped it, but if he was that confused, it's possible.

Wow. Good thing you asked! I saw something posted about chestnut flour being low carb, and it was because the nutritional information from the company was at fault. They had already subtracted the fibre so it looked like it was low carb because it listed so much fibre. It turned out that you it is no different than regular flour.

What do you mean? Compared to the 300g/day SAD, that's practically starving yourself!

THat's what I think. I have a package of burrito sized (fairly large) plain flour tortillas (they're for my non LCing son) and I just checked the package. They are 33 carbs ea (and 1g fiber). I can't see how the restaurant would have something that's 51.

I would have skipped it as well. But... I think Poor Justin was still confused.

It's entirely possible, but he was very sweet about it, so he still gets an A for effort....and my A is for Avoidance.

You can get your burger in a lettuce wrap at just about every burger joint here in the Bay Area. Those wraps seem ridiculously carby, error or not on Justin's behalf. I always skip them but nice of them to have another option for the LC'ers.

I agree with the compliment call to management idea, and maybe they could tell you what wraps they're using so you can investigate more...I personally would want to anyway! That seems like more carbs then what is even in the plain old white bread bun?

Hmmm... I have to question those 51 grams of carbs. Young, confused people are often the norm in the food industry. As such, I would not trust any of them for accuracy concerning important food questions. I think you would be better off writing the corporate office and asking for the nutritional make up of the food.

Of course, he might have been 100% correct. Since low-carb has not legal meaning that I know of, simply dropping the carbs from 55g to 51g might be considered low-carb.

Might be dyslexia, if I send my husband to look at numbers and he comes back with something different then what I expected I ask about the number.
Could have been 15 not 51

This is surely a mistake, since it's likely that their regular hamburger buns are lower carb than that. Even for a SAD this is not low carb.

Goodness, what in the world made the restaurant think it was LC?

I check ingredients, not just carbs. Usually the info is available online but not always. The ingredients eliminate a lot of things for me that the carb count would not.
