Can anyone recommend a good protein powder?

My last go around I switched to breakfast smoothies from bacon and eggs in around week 3 or 4. I was hoping to do the same this time.

I was using Designer Whey and 1 scoop had 1.5 g of carbs (with sucralose). Now they use stevia and carbs have jumped to 8. Add in a half cup of plain, full fat yogurt and that's just too many carbs for me.

Can anyone recommend a powder (preferably vanilla) that doesn't taste like crap and is low carb?

I wish I could, but I've never used a protein powder before. I want to try one sometime, so I will keep an eye on this thread for any answers.

Thanks Rebecca. I'll check it out.

Or maybe I'll just give up on the protein powder and see how a raw egg tastes in my smoothie. I'm just looking for the protein boost to slow the glycemic impact of the carbs in the 5 frozen strawberries I use and the half cup of yogurt.

There are those who believe that protein powder is not a good thing to use for protein, and that you should just eat some real protein, like a piece of meat or fish, etc.

Isopure Zero carb vanilla is pretty good for shakes, but it doesn't taste great when you try to bake with it.

The Wal Mart stuff (Body Fortress I think) used to be awesome- tasted great, affordable, and had about 3 carbs. But then they changed the formula and now it is around 7 per scoop. Way too many.

Optimum Nutrition is pretty good I think. It's more carbs than Isopure but it tastes a little better in cookies and cakes. I often use Whey protein powder in place of gluten in cookie and cake recipes.

The "eggnog" route is always good IMHO. One or two pasteurized eggs, a little bit of cream, almond milk, vanilla extract and sweetener to taste. Blend it up and down the hatch. It's very tasty.

I exclusively use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard. Hands down my favorite. Right now I have Rocky Road and Vanilla Ice Cream, have used Mocha Cappuccino and Chocolate Malt in the past as well.

Pretty fond of Syntrax Nectar. Each of the 5 flavors I've tried have been at least good enough to finish the jar, and I keep 4 of them always on hand (Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, and Latte). Less than 4g of carbs per scoop.

I liked EAS 100% Whey, but they changed the formula so it jumped from 3 carbs to 5 or 6.
I'm using Jay Robb Egg White right now, but it's expensive and I can't get it locally.
I'll try Jay Robb Whey next time I get across the river.

So many of them taste soapy to me. I found one tht I like ( I use them as a dessert occasionally) . Now it does have 5 carbs but the extra 2 carbs seem a good trade off for what it does NOT have if you trust the label.

Reserveage organic
From grass fed cows
Rbst and rbgh hormone free
No gmo fillers
NO SOY
No gluten
No sugar (uses stevia)

It's delicious with water or almond milk.

What brand is that?

I bought a natural one from a vitamin store (their brand) only to discover...tada it has SOY. UGH.

Also -for you Optimum lovers, please be careful as they've recently started adding HFCS to their mixes. Read your labels!

I would not recommend any protein powder!

1. They all taste horrendous
2. They are all highly processed
3. They are expensive
4. You will gain fat mass, and feel nauseated all the time.

I stick to whole foods such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, legumes, and Greek yogurt in order to
reach my protein intake goals.

1. They taste amazing
2. They are not processed
3. They are not too expensive
4. You will be providing your body with all essential nutrients, and you will look and feel amazing!

I don't gain fat mass or feel nauseated all the time when having protein shakes. I drink one for breakfast and one at work most work days. and also post workout when I do weight training. I do eat regular food the rest of the time.

the taste, meh. that could be better. I usually mix mine at home with almond milk and that helps the flavor a lot. after workouts sometimes I'll add a little fruit or davinci's to add flavor also. but the almond milk helps a ton. not my favorite thing to have by all means, but not the worst thing I've had either, lol.

I have tried these and they are all good...Optimum nutrition, syntrax and whey to go...the last has the shortest list of ingredients so it is worth checking out...you can buy all of the from netrition.

I forgot to add that I just bought some "unflavored" protein powder from them for making "breading".
