Casein Protein Shakes

I read about this on another thread here. Are these sugar-free and low-carb? I'm looking for something to blend with ice, as sometimes I crave something the consistancy of a milkshake. If it fits within the plan, where would I find it? Thanks!

Many are.
Here's a link to Netrition's selection:
Netrition.com - the Internet's Premier Nutrition Superstore

Thank you, Dottie! That is really helpful :)

I found them delicious, especially when made with hwc. However, I got a little too happy with them and not only did I stall but I started experiencing allergy symptoms (I had previously tested sensitive to casein). But I think they taste loads better than whey and will still have one occasionally.

I like them - and given that it's such a slow-digesting protein, these shakes are great to have at bedtime. Optimum Nutrition in Chocolate Supreme is my personal favorite. I just checked Dottie's link & that's available on here, too. :)

Thank you for the input FMH and Sheila. Sheila, I was reading the reviews and noticed that a lot of people mentioned that it takes more than a cup of liquid to make a shake or else you get a pudding consistency. The problem with adding more liquid they state is that it cuts down on the flavor of the shake. Have you found this to be a problem? I was also looking at 4 Dimension's Isolate Matrix Chocolate Protein mix. Have you heard anything about it?

I use optmum nutrition casein in choclate supreme...I use 12 to 16 ounces of liquid...a combo of cold coffee almond milk and ice...it always tastes great...i do add a lil ez sweetz with it if I use a lot of coffee as that dulls the sweetness a little.
Otherwise I think it is plenty sweet when made with just almond milk or water.

The Optimum Nutrition casein is no doubt thicker than its whey counterpart, but still I really haven't found the above to be a problem with the former. To retain its flavor with as little liquid possible (while still not being stuck with a pudding consistency), maybe consider using a combination of water, raw eggs (I'm into it!), heavy cream, and/or unsweetened almond/hemp milk. In my opinion, this method enhances the flavor in a way that I am sorry water just cannot. Very seldom do I use water alone as a mixing agent when it comes to protein powders!

A little off topic, but has anyone tried the ON Chocolate Cake Batter? I usually get the Chocolate Supreme, but you put the words 'cake batter' on something, and well....I sort of wonder if it might be the same thing with a different label! :) On the flip side, if it's really like cake batter...I'd hate not to try it. Thanks!

I'd be careful with the casein - especially Optimum Nutrition's. I became a hardcore label reader and discovered that they have HFCS in it. I'm pretty sure the Chocolate Supreme (that's the one I used to have) had it in there. Unless it was purchased outside the US where it's pretty much illegal to put that in there, check your labels.

Fighting4myLife 08-26-2013 02:00 PM

I'm so excited to try it. Thank you for your suggestions. I got it today and I plan to make a shake as a dessert. I'm going to use my Vitamix and use almond milk and ice to try to get a milkshake consistency. I'll let you know how it goes.:) I'm also interested in the chocolate cake batter the OP mentioned, so any reviews would be appreciated.

 Definitely checking ingredients.

Just checked Netrition nutrition on the Chocolate Supreme - no HFCS. :jumpjoy:

You have peaked my interest! Evidently it came out in 2011, but for whatever reason my local Vitamin Shoppe doesn't carry it. The only nutritional difference seems to be the extra 1g carb the Chocolate Cake Batter has per scoop (Chocolate Supreme has 3g per scoop). I've had great luck with this brand & will definitely check that flavor out. Thanks. :)

Well, depending on how it works out, I guess I'm glad! :) I'm sort of delaying my order in hopes of feedback, but I will probably go ahead and order late this week or early next. Unless I have a sudden change of heart, I may try it. Might check their refund policy, first...just in case. Can't imagine I won't like it that much...

lterry913 08-29-2013 08:40 AM

I havery not tried the Optimum nutrition cake batter but did try another brands...it was sickeningly sweet but did taste like a batter...why not get the powder you like and get some cake batter flavor drops from capella and add them to shake...they are like 4 bucks so not too bad if you don't like. Or orde a sample pack from some where...a while back some web sites for the powders were offering free samples.

Good luck.

Fighting4myLife 08-30-2013 07:51 AM

Update: Tried the Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Supreme and . I put 1 big scoop of powder in my Vitamix, add a glass full of crushed ice, 10 oz of unsweetened almond milk and blended until it was smooth. It was delicious, filling and took care of any sweet craving I would have had. Thank you Sheila for your recommendation! A keeper for sure!

ouizoid 08-30-2013 08:40 AM

just so y'all know--you can make a "cake batter" flavour by adding artificial butter flavouring (like you find by the extracts) to any flavour shake. I don't know why that works, but it totally does.

Buffy45 08-30-2013 10:30 AM

To me, the pudding consistency sounds good, no?

ncgirl 08-30-2013 03:37 PM

Thanks for the thoughts on adding the cake batter flavoring - I actually do that, already :) I just figure if I order it with the flavor already in it, I can do something else with the flavoring (and not worry about running out!). I also appreciate the suggestion about the sample size - I emailed the company yesterday to see if they have anything available.
It's still in my shopping cart while I ponder...but after trying the egg protein (different brand) in a sample size, and having had whey protein previously, I am sold on the casein.
Anyway, thanks, everyone, for the input, and have a fantastic Labor Day weekend!

Tried the choc supreme tonight, very good. I like the thickness

I love it!! Just enough heavy cream mixed into 2 scoops of protein powder when I have to be out the door NOW has proven a delicious lifesaver for me many times. Try it ... :)

Buffy45 08-31-2013 08:44 AM

Oh yum. Your endorsement of them is one of the reasons I went and got it yesterday Sheila :high5:
