How long does dead animal mouth last??

I'm constantly brushing my teeth and still grossing myself out. This isn't a permanent part of LC is it?? I'm less than a week on LC.

Please tell me this will go away!!

Ok...it goes away.

Seriously, as long as I'm in ketosis (and at a permanent <25gm of carbs per day I always am), I have this problem.

I keep a little pot of mint growing on my kitchen windowsill and just pluck a leave to chew on as I feel the need. I'll also stick a drop of spearmint essential oil in a glass of warm water (or tea, depending on my mood).

I believe that it happens while a person is becoming adapted to ketosis and if they stay in ketosis it goes away. The explanation is that one of the 3 types of ketones that are produced are being 'expelled' or wasted through respiration etc. until the body becomes adept at using them (keto adapted). Once that happens that type of ketone is only produced and then used and not 'expelled'.

I'm pretty new at this, about a month. I had a metallic / sweet taste in my mouth from about day 3-4, and it lasted about 2 weeks. I didn't do anything special for it, I do keep to 30 carbs or under per day so I'm assuming I'm in ketosis. ( much less hunger, no cravings and Keto sticks consistantly positive.

Someone mentioned in the oil pulling thread that when they did their oil pulling in the PM before bed they didn't have the really bad "keto mouth" in the morning.

I can't attest to it's effectiveness because I do my oil pulling in the morning but it does really clean out your mouth well so I could see how it would be beneficial to do it at night before bed.

I hope your answer is the right one! I'm definitely expelling something foul via respiration. The dog has been having loose stools and I'm suspicious my breath may be the cause.

Edited to quote Dr. Eades of Protein Power: The bad breath comes from blowing off the excess ketones. Typically once people have adapted to a low-carb diet this goes away. Until then, if it’s a problem, they can use sugar-free breath mints.

If it's coming from your lungs, it's acetone (or acetate, I forget), a byproduct of protein metabolism. Lower your meat intake and it will improve.

It can only be excreted through urine or your breath. The more you drink, the more you pee, the less comes out in your breath.

When my breath starts to annoy me, I drop a kettle bell on my foot. It hurts really bad, so I stop thinking about the breath thing
