I am an addict and my name is Dani

I need to whack myself upside the head with a cast-iron skillet. So, I am writing myself this thread, in public to myself. Feel free to comment or add your own accountability.


My name is Dani and I am a sugar addict. I was wrong. I cannot have 1 bite of my drug of choice. I WILL LOSE CONTROL. One bite turns to thirty and on and on. Sugar addiction is REAL. It is not something that should a blind-eyed be turned. I should not just "eat less" normal food. I cannot have "normal food". I DO NOT EAT CARBS. I cannot eats carbs. Carbs are a drug and they are MY drug.

Things I know:

1. I am addicted to sugar
2. I cannot eat low carb tortillas. They are a trigger food.
3. I cannot have just one bite. It will hurt me.
4. My body isn't like many other people and will never be.
5. I feel better on low carb.
6. As little as sugar as possible makes me more in control of my addiction.
7. If a foods gives me a "feel good" after I eat it, it needs to be eliminated from my diet.
8. Food is fuel for me, not meant for enjoyment (for me).
9. I do not need to feel stuffed and tired for a meal to be considered "great"
10. I CAN SAY NO.

Things I'm going to do:

1. Eat on plan
2. Finish my book of pre-measured recipes
3. Cook every Sunday to plan for the week
4. Be accountable on the popular internet calorie counting site (who we shall not name!)
5. BE PROUD OF MYSELF
6. Be accountable for my addiction
7. Read Lowcarb friends atleast 3 times a week.

Okay, I'm done. Back on plan today. Had eggs and peppers/onions for breakfast. Will be going to the fair today and I will be in control.

Thank you. I'm ready. Bring it on Fair! It's just going to sit like a rock in my tummy if I eat that stuff anyway.

And I need to add:

Beer is just liquid bread. I cannot and will not have beer. Beer gives me that "feel good" so I cannot have it. Bye beer!

Sounds like you've done some good mental prep.
Good luck. You might want to have a read your the addictions forum, assuming you haven't already done so.
I have one question for you and it's more about clarification of #7.

7. If a food gives me a "feel good" after I eat it, it needs to be eliminated from my diet.

Do you really feel good after you eat it, or it more when you start to eat it? I am not challenging how you feel, as only you know this, but how long does the feel good last after you eat?

Bella- Both. I feel deprived and then I give in. Think I can control it but the beast comes out. I DO feel a buzz from eating carbs and CALM...similar to drinking beer. I feel NOTHING when I eat low carb...I get no enjoyment out of eating this way at all. I get no physical satisfaction. That's my sign that it's where I need to be. It's almost like, "That's it? Really? How unsatisfactory". No enjoyment at all. No stimulation. My body is obviously used to getting a reaction and craves it so low carb is boring to me. That's also why it's hard to be on plan. And that's why I feel I am an addict. Scratch that. I AM an addict. Addicts crave what they shouldn't have. That's me.

You sound just like me. I'm back on the bandwagon of LC I can't even have a taste of something sweet. I have bingeing problems also. Have fun at the fair! Maybe you can find a good turkey leg or sausage!

Yep, this sounds like me! After I have something carby I feel like this, but then later I crash and feel so tired. They are definitely addicting!

I could and have said evrything you said above to myself and others many times...I do however think there are some foods that are meant to be experienced and enjoyed...just not abused or eaten on a daily basis...my goal s to be able to do this someday without going completely crazy and falling off the wagon.

Good luck to you and I am very interested in seeing your cookbook in the future...we always need more resources that are taylored to our woe.

Edited to add that I am Laurie and I to am a sugar addict....wether it be white sugar or wheat products...potatoes I can control.

#8. food is fuel only. WELL I HAVE to say that I get HUGE enjoyment from some of my LC meals that I can't believe it is so decadent and a life changer for me.
you can think of low carb food meals as enjoyment. Don't think food will never be enjoyable again. It can easily be. Think of that best meal and drool, like I do HAHA
lc lump crab cakes. YUM. bacon, cheese stacked grilled chicken. OMG!


sugar is so high in carbs it is crazy. 1 tsp. is about 4.5 carbs. that adds up so fast it is insanity


enjoy the fair! sounds like a fun day.

That's the thing....Low carb IS decadent, but doesn't give my body the response it wants! How sad is that? It wants to eat EVERYTHING and I want it to be skinny. I want to win this battle once and for all.

Hi! I can totally relate. I am addicted to sugar and gluten. The full switch doesn't trigger when I eat these foods. I get a mild high and want more, more, more!


You will still be able to get joy from your food though. Check out the Food Porn threads. Sooooo yummy!

I sure understand that. I love pepperoni and cheese as a snack. but when my mind is saying a gigantic bowl of Ben & Jerry Phish Food decadent ice cream, then I care less about the pepp/cheese. HAHA

I know. It is hard. the body wants and the mind has to say no. after a while it gets so annoying. but with time and more time on plan usually it gets easier.

Dani, I could have written this word for word! I also crave the buzz I get from eating carbs and love the calmness. Of course the good feeling does not lasts long as the carbs make me feel lousy but I still keep on eating them for days. Just like an alcoholic.

I am just getting back on LC train myself and this time I try to eat the most satisfying LC foods. I don't skip on fats, I eat lots of mayo, oily fish like salmon, lamb chops, burgers, eggs, oopsie rolls. I include lots of garlic and interesting spices and really try to make the food delicious. I know that the longer I stay binge-free the easier it will get and eventually the desire to binge should completely go away (I hope).

I'm the same way, only with alcohol. I've told myself so many times that I can have just one glass of wine, and I know I can't. And when I have the wine I eat so much carby junk. So the first step for me was quitting the alcohol. I can't even have "just a tiny bit" because I have no self control once I start. Sometimes I wish I could quit food "cold turkey" like you can with alcohol. It would be so much easier to just not take the first bit.

I know I have a compulsive/additive personality and carbs are as dangerous to me as are cigarettes and alcohol. I have never been able to have just one glass of wine or just one cigarette or just one cracker/cookie/chip etc...

I also agree that low carb eating is boring! I enjoy all the things I now eat but they don't have the "comfort" factor to them that a bag of cheetos or a bowl of ice cream has.

However, it's worth it for my health. I watched my neighbor die from diabetes complications last year and all the things he went thru leading up to death (loss of toes, loss of eyesight, loss of kidney function, heart attack, etc..). With an A1c of 6.1, I don't have the luxury of eating whatever I want anymore without doing damage to my health so I forge ahead on the low carb path to the best of my ability.

Thanks to all of you for your comments, suggestions, and advice! It helps me to stay focused on what needs to be done

I am a carb addict too. But I found I can eat veggies and a fruit a day along with my protein, Greek yogurt and fats. I have a foodplan (3 meals a day, weighed & measure) that tells me how much is enough. So long as I stay on the plan, I am feeling good. I can even enjoy my veggies and fruit, as well as mix and match with the proteins to make appetizing meals where I find enjoyment. They aren't boring and are totally satisfying. I don't eat dairy except for Greek yogurt as it upsets my stomach but do use soymilk as a substitute occasionally. I don't eat sugars, grains or alcohol, most beans & legumes. Sounds boring but isn't. I have certain meals I love and rotate them throughout the week. At any rate it works. I am 5'7.5" and 65 yrs okd, so am living proof that one can lose and keep it off after menopause. I didn't start all this until I turned 52 yrs old.

Hello Dani .... I think there are many of us here just like you. When I was maintaining nearly 400lbs 20 years ago, the amounts of food I ate are almost hard to believe. Still today if I ate what I want I would be on the way to that weight again. I read Atkins and I realized that diets do not work and I needed to stop going on a "diet". So I decided if I eat like a 200 lb man sooner or later I will weight 200 lbs (235lbs today...I think). I do not get on and off the scales daily or even weekly, I eat low carb, I do not count anything but carbs if I binge it is on a lb of bacon and 5 cheeseburgers. I have a treat meal for a birthday or holiday and I get up the next am and have my eggs and bacon no worries. It is hard to describe how much better I feel after losing almost 160lbs. Everyone here has had success, after reading your post I believe you are on your way to success in your daily battle.... "Fight the Fight' it is worth winning.

I hope you are having a good day, Dani.
For me this low carb thing gets easier every day, or that's the general trajectory, so that is a reward to staying on plan. My tastes change, too, so I am enjoying what I can eat ever so much and I am never really hungry. If I feel hungry, I eat something on plan. Sometimes it is not what I might crave but it works to take the craving away. Last week I was craving alcohol like no time in the last 4 months. Sort of had to white knuckle it (I was stressed and was longing for release). It helped that I was able to recognize the craving for what it was and to KNOW that no way one glass of wine would not turn into the entire bottle. Food is not my prime addiction, so I don't know how applicable my experience is to yours. I could have caved, and there is no way I can say it won't happen in the future, but somehow the realization that one glass would not be enough and a fleeting exerience of lightness helped me through a couple of rough days. This forum also helped. Today, I am back in form!

I am one of those weirdos who when I have a drink or two, my appetite actually shrinks. I would go to bars ages ago and the people I was with would want to gorge themselves afterwards on poutine and other heavy things. Gross!

Now, I never drink to curtail my appetite its just that some people mention that they can't drink because their eating tends to get sloppy. That's not me. In fact, I did have 2 shots of vodka in cherry limeade last night. SF.

IDK, I quit smoking no prob, I can go a year with no drinks, and stop at one, I never have problems stopping opiates... But give me sugar and starch and its not a pretty picture.

It's such a relief to have the monkey off my back and be in control of my eating when I LC.
