Your 5 biggest motivations for low carbing?

Let's all just assume better / good health..... And being around for our families.

1. Diabetes control
2. Weight loss
3. More energy
4. Better marital relations
5. Vanity

These are my motivations, in order... What are yours?

I've been at this so long, motivation is almost a non issue. It is healthier for me, and I want to get the last bit of weight off. Vanity may be my only real motivator, along with the fact that anything other than the way I eat seems incomprehensible at this point in time.

My original motivators were not dying young and sick from the medical issues that come in my family with our insulin issues. And I wanted to be able to get up and down off the floor to play with my kids, instead of struggling. I wanted to give my husband a more beautiful wife.

But I shortly realized that motivations come and go. It is ironclad will and complete commitment that has given me success, not a list of goals or transient feelings. Those aren't good enough, when the going gets tough. That's been my experience.

  3. Better clothes
  4. Increased opportunity for, um, fun
  5. Decreased chance of diabetes (both my parents had it)

I never again want my weight to be an issue when I'm back in a wheelchair or hospitalized. It's awful.

I never again want doctors to endanger me, dismissing my very real complaints by blaming it on my weight.

I don't want to develop a disease I could have prevented, like diabetes or hypertension.

I want to be feel confident that I could fit into something at any clothing store I choose.

I want to know I can fit comfortably in any ride at any amusement park in the world. Especially the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

1. to relieve depression and anxiety (worries about health were making me depressed and anxious!)

2. to relieve the fear that I was going to continue to get bigger (up until pretty shortly before I started losing, I was not too freaked out about the idea of maintaining, but was very scared that I couldn't stop gaining, the last ten pounds kind of scared me though)

3. didn't want my kids to see me going through medical hell

4. wanted to feel hopeful about life again

5. wanted to feel younger/attractive again/not embarrassed about my appearance

I am still 30 pounds from my goal, but I'd say the only one that I still feel at all is #5. Four down, one to go!

WOE: Low carb lifestyle
Start Date: June 1, 2012
1. Improved mobility and flexibility - I've had "arthritis" since I was 22, although the docs can't figure out why, since every test comes back negative...low carb helps.
2. To sleep better (chronic sleep issues forever now) but I haven't noticed a difference.
3. To avoid all the horrible medical problems that come with obesity that runs in my family (diabetes, heart attack, stroke, early death) - mother died at 54 from diabetes complications, blind, renal failure, angina, strokes, you name it, she had it from not managing her diabetes for years. Brother died at the age of 33 from a massive heart attack because he was morbidly obese (+450 lbs, last I had heard) and didn't take care of himself.
4. To look good with clothes on. (I'll never look good naked without plastic surgery)
5. Generally to feel better, have more energy and not feel sick and tired and unmotivated to do ANYTHING ever.

That's my short list. I'm sure there are others things, but that's probably the top 5.

Not sure without thinking about my 5, but what pops first into my head is . . . .

.. . improved self esteem.

Not sure/won't go into where my long term low self esteem issues come from, but going from a young and fit person, to an older overweight woman hasn't helped. And plummeting into denial didn't help either. No fixing age, I am blessed to have more years than many people get, but fitness/health/weight is something I can do something about.

I don't really have any interesting, moral reasons at the moment.
I just want to feel and be good looking instead of feeling like the lumpy, round girl in the room.

I recently had a couple of pictures taken with a group of girls before going out to a birthday dinner, and it was like: thin, thin, thin, thin, round.

I suddenly realized I was *that* friend... the one you look at in a picture and make jokes about. :/
