Awesome pickles, but beware the carb count!

OK, this might not be huge, but I have started eating Vlasic Farmer's Garden pickles.... they say a serving is 1 spear, and that each spear has 1 carb.... but it also states that a serving is 1 ounce. The thing is, I weighed the pickle spears and all of them are almost exactly 2 ounces.

So, one spear might not be a big deal, but what if you eat 5 spears?

Just thought you might want to know.

Cucumbers are approx 3 cals and 1g carbs per ounce, so it stands to reason pickles would be the same (or slightly more, depending on how they're pickled) .

Keep in mind a pickle spear may weigh more than a cucumber spear of the same size due to the fact that the pickle spear is soaked in pickle juice.

It would be interesting to cut out a spear from a cucumber the same size as a pickle spear and weight them both. Maybe there's not enough difference to matter...

I don't worry too much about vegetable carbs.

I love Cornichons---tiny tangy little pickles that are so good w/hard boiled eggs, or liver pate and bacon, or whatever. And best of all, 7 of them are 0 carbs. I like the Maille brand, but any would do as I've had all kinds and they all taste the same---delicious!

this is just one example of a VERY common phenomenon. you will see a container with 30 ounces, serving size 6 ounces, saying there are approx 4 servings in the container... anyone looking at it can see that's not true, but so often we don't really look.

if you are serious about the carbs in packaged foods it's good to weigh a serving and compare that to the weight given on the nutrition label. I think that is the most accurate comparison.

CTH has a good point. Pickled cucumbers are saturated with brine so they weigh heavier than the unbrined cucumber. Plus, if they are fermented (as opposed to vinegar pickles) their carbohydrate content may even be decreased (fermentation bacteria eat the natural sugars). More than likely there's little or no carb left in a fermented pickled cuc--No way a pickle could have MORE carb by weight which it would be according to the label since you're weighing the brine saturated in the pickle too. I wouldn't count carbs or stress about it at all.

It's hard to overeat pickles anyway--sooner or later the salt will stop you.

I made my first batch of pickles this summer--yum, yum!
