Kippers?

I just ate a can of Polar Naturally Smoked Kipper snacks.
They were delicious. 2 g of carbs per can.
I always stayed away from things "smoked" because of the chemicals used to get that smoked flavor. But this said naturally smoked and the label did not list any chemicals.
Anyone thoughts about this product or kippers in general?

I'm surprised they had any carbs - most kippers do not. I eat and enjoy them, as with oil packed sardines, too.

I really love my kippers! I Keep several cans of Brunswick golden smoked, seasoned smoked and Lemon pepper ones in my pantry for snacking purposes. Oddly enough, I LOVE shellfish and other seafood but HATE fish except for the very occasional can of tuna ,salmon and these delicious cans of fishy and sodium love. Before this WOE I used to enjoy them with crackers but now I just drain the can and eat them plain or wrap them in some nice romaine leaves and enjoy them like mini sandwiches.

Kippers mixed with cream cheese makes a lovely spread to put into celery. I like 1 tin of kippers to 4 oz of cream cheese.

As a weird kid in my elementary school, my mother used to send me kipper snacks and crackers for lunch. Stinky fish fun!

Artic moma....funny you say that because I looked at a google image of the nutrition info on the can and it lists zero carbs, but on the actual can I had it had 1 carb per serving with 2 servings per can. Certainly lc enough for me.
I really thought they were tasty. I ate them and a can of sardines, both in olive oil at dinner tonight. The kippers were much tastier.

Sardines require mustard. Either yellow or dijon. And perhaps a dash of lemon juice. Then they are scrumptious! I find them a bit blah without it, like an avocado without some salt. Not bad, but it sparkles with a little seasoning.

Also - everything is better with hot sauce. Sardines included.

I meant to buy hot sauce at walmart this morning.
I never seem to come accross it in the aisles.
What product aisle do you usually find it in
and which one is your fav?
Oh, and just fyi, the kippers I bought this am have zero carbs.

In our Walmart I believe the hot sauces are in the ethnic section - Latin America/Asia cuisine shelves, depending on the type of hot sauce. I like Sriracha (no good on induction due to some sugar, but excellent when used sparingly in maintenance), Cholula (best on eggs of the common brands, bar none), Frank's Red Hot (a must for wings), and Chipotle Tabasco (my favorite Mexican/Texmex hot sauce).

For sardines, I'd go with Cholula or Frank's. But a tbsp of Dijon is still my fave

Oh, man, I have at least half a dozen hot sauces at any one time! I love them, and use them all the time. Some of my relatives even buy them for me when they're out of the country.

Some are in the ethnic sections, the rest in the condiment aisle.

It's healthy, and good for your heart.

I found it at our local super Walmart Center, sorry, I can't remember which isle.

Well, I think I have to try some kippers! And maybe even some sardines w/mustard and or hot sauce and lemon. I love the canned oysters and make them in a dip someone here turned me onto. But I would never have thought I'd like kippers or sardines, but I found my mouth watering at the descriptions here.

One of the most fun things about this journey for me is finding new LC foods I like, things I wouldn't have looked twice at in my former life. Every one is a little treasure to be added to my chest of great flavors and satisfaction on a LC woe.

We'll see if Kippers are going to be my latest gem.

I took your advice.....sugar is the number 2 ingrediant....not so healthy.
I wish food companies would stop putting sugar in everything.
It's the main reason why I'm a label reading fanatic.

Kippers, anchovies, herring and mackerel - very fond of all of them (salmon, crab etc. are just universal givens, right?).

In addition to the usual kipper, herring and mackerel dishes in the UK, we're fortunate enough for our supermarkets to import additional fishy delights in these forms from the Nordic-Scandinavian countries and they have a vast array of ways to prepare them: many of which I've sampled.

Can you purchase mustard oil? (We can in the UK but it's notionally not sold for human consumption but is available for either 'religious' or 'hair-dressing' purposes from Asian shops.) That always makes a very fine mustard dressing for fish when available mustard sauces have too many carbs or other undesirable ingredients.

Too many to choose from, and not knowing anything I bought the cheapest one.
Goya. Tried it tonight and it tasted great. Not too terribly hot.
I know many hot sauce afficianados like it really scorching but this was just fine for me.

I do like it hot. For me, hot sauces do A LOT to stimulate my taste buds and make me forget about carbs.

Also Avid, saw your post on Sirracha, which is one of many hot sauces I love. (The more you get into hot sauces the more you realize how different they can be, and which ones go w/which foods in the way you like.)

Sirracha is, by almost any calculator out there, about a gram of carbs a teaspoon. It is not like ketchup, and you don't need a lot. For me, 2 tsps. does it over eggs, or on burgers or whatever, and like I said, I like it hot. That's 2 grams of carbs.

Now. Everyone gets to decide where they spend their carb grams, and what's worth it is a personal decision. However, I do have to say that your dismissal of Sirracha because it has sugar in it, might have been a bit hasty. (Which is not to say I don't understand how you wish they'd just leave the sugar out---so do I, and find say, I like Heinz reduced sugar ketchup much better than the reg.--- Tangier and more tomatoey.) But I say try it and see if you like it. For 1 or 2 grams of carbs, it might be worth it to you on certain foods.

If you do like it, then a carb gram or two might be worth it to you. Or not. Of course ,your decision. But, imo, Sirracha used moderately of LC foods is not an unhealthy choice.

I don't agree. Used as a condiment, and in combination with other good LC choices, I think it's just fine.

You all had me craving kippers and I had never had them before in my life!! So I picked up a couple cans at WalMart and just ate a tinful of them. They are so good!!

Avid you can always make your own, too.
Soak dried chilis (your choice of kind/heat)in boiling water for a few minutes to soften then blend. Add garlic, salt, vinegar, whatever else you like. Blend it into a paste or more liquid, as you like it.
You can add some things like fish sauce, gluten free tamari (or coconut aminos), sweetener, cilantro or parsley - play around and find a recipe you like

Tu'O'ng O'T' Sirrachia has 1 carb and 1 sugar for 1 tsp

I'm with you. Its hard to find products without sugar in them.
