Best mayo?

What is the best store-bought mayo? I see that both Hellmans and Dukes are zero carb, but they are both made with soybean oil. Is that good? Or is soybean oil bad, for some reason?

I buy Spectrum brand made with canola oil or Hains made with safflower.
I like the taste of Hains better than Spectrum and its a bit less expensive than Spectrum, but folks who know say canola is better than safflower for use. Not sure I remember why. I get them at my food coop, and try to buy when they on sale.
I hear a lot here about seed oils not being so good for us, I am wondering if I should compost my small unopened bottle of sunflower oil.

I'm not a fan of soybean. I use Duke's when I'm in a hurry, using just a dab.
To make a big bowl of tuna salad or something, I make my own using light olive oil.

The reasons soy isn't great:
-high omega 6 which isn't optimal for your omega3/omega6 ratio
-soy is highly genetically modified
-hormone mimicing properties of soy make it a questionable choice for menopausal women.
-as with all/most omega 6 sources, it contains phytic acid which may reduce absorbtion of micronutrients.
-might be carcinogenic
-might whack your thyroid out

Unfortunately, even mayonnaise that's labeled "made with olive oil" is usually primarily soybean oil. I haven't found a good commercial mayonnaise, although I use Duke's occasionally since it's sugar free. I've made my own, but it tastes too lemony for me. I think I'll try using apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice next time. I also use pasteurized eggs, since I'm wary of raw eggs.

I am not a great soy fan, but would note that not all soy is genetically modified . . . look for the organic label.
Spectrum makes an organic olive oil mayo . . . just found on amazon.

you said it better.
I should have said "soy has a high likelihood of being genetically modified, especially grocery store brands."

90% of soy in US is GMO. But that number is skewed some because not all of it goes to making food and I'd bet that non-food uses aren't non-GMO. Some of it is used for industrial purposes like making plastic and for cosmetics and other non-food uses.

And animal feed.

Here are the ingredients for the Spectrum "Olive Oil" mayonnaise. Please note where olive oil falls in the list of ingredients. It also contains honey.
Ingredients
Organic expeller pressed soy and/or canola oil, organic whole eggs, organic egg yolks, organic extra virgin olive oil, filtered water, organic honey, organic distilled vinegar, sea salt, organic mustard (organic distilled vinegar, water, organic mustard seed, salt, organic spices), organic lemon juice concentrate.

Checked my Haines label and discovered both sugar and honey, but not until the 9th and maybe 12th ingredients.
Well I don't eat much of it, so willl explore something else when it is gone.

If you live in or near New England, the best mayo is Cains, hands down. Tony will try to force Hellmann's on me but "no." Can one of you share your recipe for mayo? I am hoping to find a recipe that will make Tony and me both happy.

I avoid soy for all the reasons that Emel stated.

I have yet to find a product that doesn't use some oil that I avoid so, I make my own which is find but I never get through a batch before it 'expires'.

As far as I know there are no brand-name mayos made with only healthy ingredients. I used to buy Duke's but stpped because of the soy.

I have the option of making my own mayo if I want some. I have all the ingredients but have not make any so I guess I don't miss mayo that much.

I do without because I would rather be anywhere other than the kitchen.

1 egg yolk
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp mustard
1/2 TBL lemon juice
1 tsp white vinegar
3/4 cup oil
dash tabasco

Mix everything but the oil in a blender or stick blender cup. Whirl a few seconds to combine. With blender on, slowly slowly slowly drizzle in the oil. It should take about 3 or 4 minutes. It will thicken as it gets done, might take a little more or a little less oil.

Taste it and adjust the salt and lemon.
Keeps 5 days in frig. You can extend the life a little by stirring in a tsp lemon juice to give it back its tang.

I have heard that if you put a tbl of whey into mayo it will keep better, so if you make your own yogurt, or if you thicken your own greek yogurt or yocheese, you can add a little whey and it will keep a couple weeks, or so I hear.

Just for fun, here's a mayo alternative. It's actually not too bad.

1 cup cottage cheese
1 tsp lemon juice
1 TBL milk or cream

Whirl in blender to smooth. Add a dab of oil to make it creamier and whirl again.

Homemade Mayonnaise

1 whole egg
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon mustard
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
pinch of salt
3/4 - 1 cup olive oil

Wash 2 eggs in warm soapy water, dry and then crack one egg into a small food processor. Separate the other egg and add the yolk. Add mustard, lemon juice and salt.

Pulse the food processor to mix.

Slowly add ¾ - 1 cup of oil in a thin stream while the food processor is on.

Thank you for the recipe, but I'm not sure about eating the raw eggs? Is that how store-bought mayo is made too? No cooking involved?

Does the home-made kind turn out white and creamy too?

Raw eggs are fine. It is how mayo is made. It turns out nice & creamy. It is neat to see it change while you're making it.

You can use any mustard you'd like, but I'd suggest using a prepared (not dry) mustard so that the vinegar in it gives its tang to the mayo.

Hey, look up "two minute mayonnaise" for a fun way to make it.

I made mayo last night. I used emel's recipe and the method here: Homemade Mayonnaise in 2 Minutes or Less - YouTube

It worked perfectly. I still have to tweak the recipe for my taste (Hellmann's/Best Foods is my gold standard), but I was happy with it.

I rarely use mayo so making my own is a waste of ingredients for me - we don't have dukes around here so I have always used Hellmans and have never had a problem. If I used it a lot I would definately make my own from scratch.

I don't really eat mayo but another suggestion if you don't like store bought and don't want to make your own is to use butter instead. Deviled eggs are a hundred times better and also healthier with butter than with mayo. You can also use butter in salmon or lobster salad.

Tuna salad can be made with evoo.
