Karen - you can often get scraps of fat from a butcher for rendering extremely cheaply, and if you're deep frying the oil can be re-used so long as it doesn't get overheated and smoke. I'd definitely hit up my local butcher if I were you - they should have suet for rendering tallow, at the very least, and that is another excellent and stable fat for frying.

I'm not looking to eliminate butter - merely to supplement my options.

I found a great dealma week ago at tha Bent Can Store. They had CO for $15. That was for a GALLON! Got two. Wish I had gotten six. Make into fat bombs, coconut bark plus use for cooking. Yum!

Also, eggs fried in coconut oil grosses me out. I can drink a bit in my tea, which I know would gross others out.

I love butter and use a lot of it. I use salted butter for everything except fat bombs which I use unsalted butter.

My main sources of fat are:
Butter
Spectrum non refined CO
Avacado
Mayo
Olive Oil

My coop finally started carrying lard. It took them awhile to get there.
I don't trust the stuff in the containers at the chain groceries.
I rarely buy it (used to though for pie crusts) but I think it is good that they stock it.

The Snow White lard fom the stores is hydrogenated and rancid, you're right not to trust it, Bella! It's basically crisco from a pig, not nearly as heart healthy as real, rendered lard.

I got a large jar of lard when I made pork scratchings from pig skin recently - it's dirt cheap to buy, makes a delicious zero carb snack food and you're left with delicious, pure lard afterwards

I like Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin when I want it to taste like coconut. It is cold-pressed.

I like expeller-pressed when I don't want it to taste like coconut. Current jar is Wilderness Family Naturals Certified Organic Expeller Pressed. I think my last jar was Spectrum brand expeller pressed.

I use butter to cook my eggs, olive oil to cook most other things.
I use CO in recipes. Fat Bombs, mayonaise, cocoa crack (which is just simple fat bombs with just chocolate, CO, and sweetener, maybe a dab of cream or vanilla)

ETA Madger, I'd keep it. My nutiva was packed in 2011 and has a 'best before' date of 4-5-2013. CO keeps more than 2 years. I want to use it up, but I won't toss it.

Ok, thanks. I have so much left, so I'll keep it then. I use it as a lip moisturizer, on my hands and as a eye makeup remover.. and, cook with it. I love it!

Another vote for Nutiva.
It has a pleasant coconutty taste.
Not overpowering, just nice.
