Evening Snacking

I've struggled with snacking in the evenings for as long as I can remember. I cherish my evenings, the kids are in bed, I've (usually) picked up the house and I finally have some "me" time. Does anyone else struggle with this?

I don't have kids and I live alone, but between 8-9 PM was always the time I reached for chocolate. Now, I reach for deviled eggs (I always have these made), beef jerky, cheddar cheese, pickles, splenda tea (it's the only sweet thing I have so it's treat like!) or I fry up a hot dog and dip it in mustard. To be honest, I've been low carbing for 10 days (this time) and I don't crave snacks anymore. I pretty much have to force myself to eat at meal time.

However, if you want a sweet fix, I know there are tons of recipes out there for easy to make things. Just use the advance search option for snack or chocolate

Hi,
Like you I am an evening snacker. I will feel full then all of a sudden at like 8pm I'm starving. LOL. I think this is all in my mind because I eat a great dinner and small snack after. What I do is I have snacks ready to eat in case this happens so I don't go off plan. I have gerd, so my snacks are light, but hey they still help me a lot.

These are the things that help me:
Celery Sticks with a small amount of cream cheese.
Sugar free Jello ( I luckily do not stall with these, maybe see how your body does)
Turkey or Ham Roll Ups. Just roll up a slice with some mustard or cheese.
All natural mozzarella Sticks from Trader Joes.
Organic Berries fresh or dried ( Berries do not make me stall either)
So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk Ice Cream.

My mom is also a snacker and doesn't have gerd her snacks are:
Pepperoni Chips
Pork Rinds made like Nachos with cheese and sour cream.
Hard Boiled Eggs
Fage 0% with Berries
Raw Natural Almonds

These are a few things, but if you look around the internet you can find some great ideas. It is better to have a low carb snack on hand then go off plan and regret it.

Thank you both for the tips. I'm following NK and I'm struggling to keep protein within my daily limits. I'm going to my food log now to see what will work for me. Ideally I'd like to give up the evening snacking but I fear that depriving myself will lead to falling off plan.

Fat bombs are great if you need something to eat but don't want to add protein.

Thanks, Mistizoom. I was looking at those but they contain peanut or almond butter. Both of the kids are severely allergic to peanuts so PB doesn't come into the house (ever). I'm allergic to almonds, so that's out too

I sometimes just have a bit of warmed cream cheese flavored with something, maybe just sweetzfree liquid splenda, sometimes a SF syrup. That helps. I'm not a big night-time snacker, but if I'm hungry before bedtime, I need to eat something. Mostly, that does the trick. Fatty and satisfying.

When I first restarted, I was having it several times a week. Now, I can't remember the last time I did. But it's always an option.

There are fat bomb recipes made without nut butters. I've made a fabulous lemon cream cheese fat bomb before. Or you could sub something like sunflower seed butter, another nut butter (cashew) or possibly tahini in recipes that call for peanut butter or almond butter.

You could also try a one minute muffin or flax muffin recipe. Usually they are pretty high in fiber but not much else, though most recipes do call for an egg. The Fantastic Flour Mix thread might also be a good place to look, there's some protein powder in the mix but not a ton.

Take pepperoni. Lay them on plate. Microwave until crispy.







I'm also allergic to all tree nuts, and very sensitive to peanuts, so when I make fat bombs, I use the recipes without nuts.

Place a single layer of pepperoni slices on 4-6 layers of paper towel, cover with 2 layers of paper towel. Microwave on high 1-1.5 minutes until as crisp as you like.

Great idea, using SFSB. I have some in my fridge. I don't know why that didn't cross my mind (probably because we don't use it often).

The cream cheese and pepperoni chips sound really good too

You could fit some on-plan snacking into your day & make sure the amounts are pre planned.

I like to snack but I have found I do best with no snacking at all.

Three good meals per day 4-5 hours apart (5 is best for me) and that keeps me satisfied. I don't get hungry unless I go too long w/o eating or don't eat enough.

Years ago I would have a protein shake (made in blender with different ingredients) for my last meal late in the evening & that took care of the snacking urge. I was still only having 3 meals per day - I was not working at the time & had brunch, dinner & shake for my meals.

I'm planned to start making room for evening protein shakes in my plan again soon because they are easy & taste great on hot summer nights.

I've followed all sorts of meal plans and three per day works best for me. Five per day and 6 per day were OK but never got the best results. If you think about it you may be able to figure out what eating style works best for you. Then just fit foods you like in & enjoy. It is all about planning.

I follow the NK plan also. My favorite go-to snack is to mix up 1tbsp butter and 1tbsp cream cheese, mix in some liquid stevia, nuke for 10 seconds and then stir it all together. It's like a little bowl of cheesecake.

This sounds awesome Would Splenda work? Stevia makes me gag.

DiamondDeb, I agree with you in regards to planning. I need to plan for a small snack in the evening and make sure I have room for whatever carbs, protein or calories I will be consuming. Eventually I'd like to cut it out completely but until that happens, I need to go ahead and plan for it. Thanks for the reminder.

Splenda would work for sure. I sometimes add a bit of coconut oil and SF coconut syrup to my cream cheese.

Or a splash of lemon juice. Or a sprinkling of cinnamon. There are all kinds of ways to go with it.

when you feel the munchies coming on in the evening do the following:
1) fill an 8oz glass with water (and a squeeze of lemon if you like)
2) set a timer for 25 min
3) drink that glass of water in those 25 min. do not eat or drink anything else.
4) wait until those 25 min are up and reassess your cravings
5) repeat from step one again if necessary
6) if you are still craving something, go to bed cuz you can't eat while you are sleeping
plan to have a big breakfast.

this has been my method to help me get over the ems (evening munchies syndrome)

Do you feel the need for salty or sweet?

For sweet, I really like a diet rite Tangerine, or Zevia Black cherry---fill a glass w/ice, fill it a third w/HWC, and the rest the diet pop. Stir very well, and as you drink it down, refill the glass w/remaining pop. Yummy, tastes like a liquid dreamsicle. I also like the So Delicious coconut ice cream. The chocolate mint is good, but I really love the Vanilla Bean w/a handful of blackberries or raspberries. And one or two squares of Dark chocolate works too. I prefer to snack on the "sweet" because a little goes a long way for me, and kills my appetite for anything else.

For salty, I like pork rinds, but not every brand or flavor. I like the Old Dutch "Baco-bits"---they seem crispier and lighter than some, with guacamole or really, any dip w/low carbs, which are many.

For me it helps to eat later, like between 7 and 8. But since you have young kids, this is probably not realistic.

I used to snack a lot in the evenings too. For the past few months I've had a cut-off time of 6PM for eating. I can only have water after 6pm now. It's a bit of a mental game and I was going to bed hungry every night for the first few days. However, now my evening cravings are gone and I don't feel hungry at bedtime. My body has adjusted. I have an easier time following a strict rule than allowing myself an option to snack. One small snack turns into multiple snacks and bad decisions for me. YMMV! Do whatever works for you!

I get hungry at night also.
If I'm gaining weight, chances are it's late night snacking that is a big reason why.
I find that eating a big breakfast helps.
Sounds funny, but I read it somewhere, tried it and it worked.
It took a few days, but I soon noticed that I wasn't as hungry at night.
There are still some days when it does hit me. Lately this has been a problem
again, because I had to cut back on fats to lose these last few pounds. Fat, is a great
satiety food, and cutting back has definetly increased my hunger a little.
So, I've bought celery...last night I had a celery stalk with sf polaner preserves w/fiber.
Only a couple of carbs and calories. Satisfied my hunger and did no damage.
Weighed in this morning and have lost another pound.
Cutting back on the fat at this stage is really paying dividends.

Also, are you snacking because you're hungry or bored? For me, it's boredom, so I pretty much try to stay busy until I hit the bed with a book

I've found if I can be outside working in my yard, the snack doesn't beckon as much.
But after three days of it being to wet to work outside, that boredom does set in and snacks enter my mind.

Like cfine, I've made some single serve fatbombs. I tried one last night with one T each of CO, Butter, bakers choco, and almond flour. I am not a chocoholic so doubt I would overeat these, but If I do again I'll half the choco. Really easy to just to melt in a glass muffin cup and stir and stick in the freezer for a bit. I add some salt to as I seem to need a bit more in my WOE.

I work long busy hours during the week, so do well during the day. But evenings are a struggle for me. I know i have been eating when i am not even hungry! Bad thing to do, even if it's lc foods.

I checked one of the main chain grocery stores in my town and they had NO pork rinds.
I was surprised because I have bought them in years past. Low-carb seems to be out of favor ( but maybe making a comeback?). I'll try some other stores. THanks for the tip about Old Dutch, Blueskies, I know stores around here carry that brand so I could ask them to order.

In shell flavored sunflower seeds provide a ton crunch and taste with a minimum of carbs. Usually only takes a handful with something to drink. Cures a bunch of snack craving for me.
