another pioneer of the low carb world. An Austrian internist ( a doctor specialising in diseases of the internal organs ) and author of the book "Life without bread" . Today while looking up some details of his diet that he had been prescribing more than 10000 patients over the course of 26 years and which he adhered to himself ,I found out that he died back in 2010. He had been researching the effect of low carb nutrition since the fifties. He cured himself of hip arthrosis,chronic polyarthritis or at least kept the progression at bay by adhering to his own diet. What age did he die ? An age that would impress any lowcarb sceptic - 97 years . So unhealthy that low carb lark .

I am posting this for the moments when one doubts if the mainstream does not know better , that if one only had the 27 grain bread made with Seychelles seasalt and Andean spring water one would be alright with having bread or such like .

His book was an excellent read. I learned quite a bit about the ability of the body to heal itself with proper nutrition. I did not know that he had passed away but 97 is a good long life!!

I googled him. Seems like he is another proponent of a paleo woe.
I wonder though, did he make specific dietary recommendations?

I would not call him paleo as he did not restrict dairy or even wheat or grains. He did say that 72g of carbs per day was the goal (which for me, would be way too much) but his book is about way more than that.

He writes about his clinical practice and his treatments for various illnesses. He had yrs. of practical experience and that made his book so compelling to me.

Life Without Bread is one of my favorite books. On some level I guess I knew that this is why I set my carb limit at 70 per day for life. Thanks for assisting with the light bulb moment.

Glad you enjoyed the reminder everyone.

Avid, definitely not a paleo guy. His book is not even written specifically for losing weight but for improving chronic diseases,which he himself suffered from. Almost as a byproduct he discovered that you also lose weight. He does delve a bit into the Paleo thing in the sense that he figures that we have not adapted to food derived from intensive agriculture but it is more of a musing as to why low carb does us good but he does not give foodlists as such. On his diet you can even eat bread if you so desire and you do not exceed the magic 72g of carbs. There are some excerps of teh book on the scdiet page, if you have not discovered it already.

I too really enjoyed Life Without Bread and found it very enlightening. His emphasis was NOT on weight loss. In fact the book has very little on LC as a wt loss tool. I found his take refreshing, espec. his theory that "easing in" to LC is healthier than just, bang, 20 carbs or less. I realize this is controversial, but again, his theory has more to do with the numerous health benefits, and even curing certain health conditions by lowering carbs to a max of 72 per day. The "bread unit" is a bit confusing to me, but I can see how it was useful in explaining carb restriction to his patients in an understandable way. I am intrigued, as well, by the theory of a "super immune system" that can sometimes be triggered after a time on a LC WOE. I am having a throat issue that I think may be connected to this (PS - I haven't gotten a cold or bad illness in over a year and a half!). I'm going to approach this theory w/my ENT doc to see if he'll try the Dr's suggestion of short term steroids to trick the immune system into realizing my throat is no longer sick. Anyway, a fascinating read and very, very enlightening and supportive of what I know to be the healthiest WOE for me.
