Where are you buying shiritaki noodles? And...
I really don't have a clue about shirataki noodles but am curious and willing to try them. I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with.

1. What stores are the noodles available in? Or online? Would rather find a local store in Tucson.

2. Do they taste fishy?

3. Which brands, flavors, types do you prefer?

4. Did you like them right away or is it an acquired taste?

I appreciate any opinions. Thanks so much.

I purchased a bag a couple off weeks ago at my local big chain grocer. They were located in thr produce asile. I am not sure what to do with them or the best way to cook them. The directions on the bag says to simply rinse and mix with sauce. I am HIGHLY skeptical that that is all it takes. As I recall they can taste fishy, I had them once years and years ago. Maybe people can post recipes or best methods of preparation.

I got mine online (Groupon!). If you rinse them well before using, there is no fishy taste that I have encountered. I personally liked them right away, and find them very easy to incorporate into my shrimp dishes. Kids like them too!

I buy mine at my local Asian Grocer. $1.99 for a 14oz bag. I'm lucky, though. If you can't find them locally you can order them online through Netriton or if you google Konjac Shiritake Noodles you can find a cheaper site.

They don't taste fishy, but they do smell fishy before you rinse them. I don't think they are an aquired taste, it's either you like them or you don't. I think people who have been doing LC for a long long time and not had any type of pasta appreciate them more than those who have just started.

Asian supermarket here too. I buy the original kind with no tofu added. They're super cheap, and no weird smell or taste here.

I also buy the kind with no tofu. I did have to buy the ones that had seaweed in them because they were out of the clear ones and I actually like them better. They don't have any fishy smell at all, which is weird because they have added seaweed:dunno:

Here is a picture of the ones I get. The dark ones are the ones with seaweed in them.

The natural food store in my area sells them, and Safeway (Vons to some of you?) sells them as well.

They go best in stir fry recipes, and they are awesome!

I buy them at a local grocery store with a large Asian section. I have this "thing" against mail ordering food I can find in my local community, so I look carefully at local retailers before buying online.

I'd you rinse them well, the fishiness goes away. I dry fry them in a pan to evaporate some of the rinse water, too. They have a weird texture, so I like them better in dishes with similar texture like stir fry or pho with bean sprouts. Not so much where soft pasta is expected like spaghetti.

4. keep getting sucked into buying them when I see them for 99 cents or less, and they are always terrible. inedible. I have TRIED to acquire the taste! LOL

I like the Miracle Noodle brand as they are zero calories, zero carbs and NO soy. They do smell funky when you open the packet. You must drain and rinse them very well for a couple of minutes and then pan dry them in a frying pan for several minutes. Once that is done the funky smell is gone and you can add veggies, proteins and sauce. Please note that if you expect them to be exactly like semolina pasta you will be disappointed. They can have a "squeaky" consistency to them and are more like Asian Rice noodles. But when I feel like pasta I make mine with pasta sauce veggies and parmesan and they are tasty and fill the need for me. They are great with a peanut sauce or a pad thai. You can go the website for some recipes.

I LOVE the Sea Tangle brand of kelp noodles. Netrition has them, the local health food store too, although they cost more. They have a crunch to them, no smell what so ever. And if you cook them too long, they shrivel up to nothing.

I think these are widely available at grocery stores. I can get these in 5-6 different grocery and health food stores in a 10 mile radius of my house.

Many people, including me, think they smell fishy, but I have never heard anyone complain that they taste fishy. My usually picky, non-LC husband eats them happily.

I have found them at Kroger, in the section where the organic and tofu is at. And Kroger is the ONLY place in town that has them as we don't have any asian markets. (wish we did though!)
They smelled fishy, but once I rinsed them off really well, it wasn't too noticable.
To me, they tasted like regular noodles.

I haven't actually bought them for a long time though.

I don't dry fry them. I rinse and then soak them, and then use them in a stir fry or maybe soups.

I don't try to use them as a replacement for pasta, I mostly use them in Asian-style dishes. I cook that way fairly frequently, more often than I ever would with pasta, so they work well for me.

Thanks everyone. I am so glad to hear they are available at many regular grocery stores. Good to know that rinsing well is highly recommended. I will just have to try them and see if I like them or not.

I've found the tofu ones at Kroger, but I really don't like the taste of those. I prefer the non-taste of the regular ones.

They are not carb free. The original kind (without tofu) are made of a Japanese yam, and are completely made of insoluble fiber. The kind with tofu has slightly more carbs.
